Which Amaretto to buy?
I'm fairly knew to liquors and which are good brands (well, vaguely).
I've never personally had amaretto and there are several brands that I've found through research, but I've never heard one way or another which is good (as opposed to the more popular brands of other alcohols like Absolut, Bacardi, or Jack Daniels). Can anyone give me a recommendation of a 25 dollar or less bottle of Amaretto? Thanks. |
lots of people like disaronno...it's pretty widely recognized as the standard uppershelf amaretto, mostly on account of being marketed so heavily...but also by being a pretty good offering.
but if you can find Lazzaroni in the tin cans...i think that's a better deal. flavor is a little less cloying, and more balanced. |
Lazzaroni is the company that makes those amazing Amaretti cookies... sold in the same red tin wrapped in tissue paper... ooooh those cookies are heavenly... :)
Their amaretto is quite tasty too - it's got more a more delicate flavor than the diSarrano brand... I don't beleive either brand will run more than 25 dollars a bottle... Amaretto isn't overly expensive... Just watch it when drinking it - get drunk on it and the sweetness will contribute to that wanting to die the next day feeling... |
Based on the reviews of disaronno I think I'll grab me a bottle of it.
Plus the bottle's bitchin'. http://static.flickr.com/19/96334884_6aaaba5ea4_o.jpg |

Yeah, DiSaronno is the standard, works fine for most things.
And yeah, I'd advise against drinking amaretto for anything except as an aperitif/post-dinner-drink or in coffee. Too much sugar = hangover, and besides, it doesn't have that much alcohol anyways, so a mixed drink with it is going to be pretty weak... But I do like a bit of amaretto on the rocks after dinner sometimes... |
It's brilliant added to hot chocolate

shot or two in coke makes for a very good dr. pepper substitute...lemon sour soda is also a classic.
but my favorite is still amaretto and cream. |
My favorite is fixing it with orange juice....MMMMMMM!
