I-90 meetup?

I mentioned this in my journal, but just thought I'd put it out there for a bigger audience.

Ktspktsp and I will be driving west from Philly to Seattle at the end of April/beginning of May... we hope to make it a quick trip, but wouldn't mind stopping at a few places along the way (lunch or dinner in Chicago, etc).

So I'm just curious about how many TFP'ers live along I-90, and if anyone will be around at that time?

The_Jazz 01-25-2008 06:41 AM

There are a bunch of us in Chicago, and as I said in your journal, you're required to stop here. :D

Let the squabbling begin over where we go now that we've established that you're stopping here.

abaya 01-25-2008 06:47 AM

Excellent! Squabble away! I figure we'll hit Chicago around May 1st, but can't be sure until we're on the road. But for now, save that date. I think it's a Thurs/Fri?

Oh, and a place that isn't TOO far off the beaten path would be nice, so that we can manage to get back on the road relatively easily. I have no clue how to get around Chicago.

The_Jazz 01-25-2008 06:52 AM

May 1 is indeed a Thursday. When you get closer we'll have to make firmer plans. I've put it in my calendar.

Downtown is bordered by I-90. In the worst case, we can all meet up in Greektown which is less than 100m from it.

Shauk 01-25-2008 09:03 AM

I'm in Seattle, you can meet me and tell me what a douchebag I am for putting up with so much shit from my ex again :p /jk!

it'd be cool to meet people I don't know :D

Hey now, I never said you were a douchebag!! Just trying to help kick your ass for your own good, that's all. :)

As for Seattle, it's possible... but we've got such a short window of time to get OUR asses across the country, and then to fly (possibly) back through Las Vegas, as we have family there, or straight to Iceland. But will keep y'all updated on our schedule, anyway.

Don't tell me the last Seattle meet-up was Christmas 2006, when ktspktsp and I were there?........

Elphaba 01-25-2008 03:01 PM

I think that was the last meet up, and I missed you. :( Keep me posted on your Seattle plans so I don't miss a second chance.

paddyjoe 01-25-2008 03:46 PM

I'm 5 miles off I-90, although just slightly east of Seattle. But hey, stop by and i'll have a cold one waiting.......

Charlatan 01-25-2008 03:50 PM

I don't think I live anywhere near the I-90... I'd take Joe's offer, he knows where to find some very tasty cold ones.

You're around Rochester, right? We start near Philly, drive south to DC to take care of some paperwork, then north again (probably through Pittsburgh) to get to 90. I don't think that goes through NY, though........... :( unfortunately.

Damn! I would love to do a TFP-Only Tour of the US. A bunch of us should all get 15 or 30 day rail passes and just haul ass all over the place, stopping wherever 2 or more are gathered in Halx's name. THAT would be awesome.

This driving straight west in order to cover as much ground as possible is no good. I'm a road-tripper by nature. We're gonna have to do this again, once we get back Stateside for more than just 2 weeks. :)

SecretMethod70 01-25-2008 04:53 PM

Sounds like a plan! Onodrim and I live right around I-90 and it's an inconsequential trip to hop on there and go into Chicago :) There are a ton of options available, especially if you don't mind driving a bit down whatever street you exit on. Really, it's fairly hard to get lost in Chicago because the streets are on a grid system :)

pig 01-25-2008 05:05 PM

This kind of horseshittery almost makes me sometimes wish I still lived in IL. When next I foray up 75 towards the land of corn and tundra, I'm looking forward to staring a few of you in your steely eyes. Have a good trip abaya...and ktsp. If you make it down towards the SE, let us know. Right...you won't. :D Best pizza in IL is down in Champaign...as far as I've found...

spectre 01-25-2008 05:36 PM

I may be able to make it in Chicago depending on what day and time you're here, but I'll do my best to make sure I'm there. Just keep us all updated. :)

Except for those streets that are diagonal. Nothing is absolute. ;)

Dammit, everyone is coming to Chicago while we are spending our year in exile.

Yeah, stay away from the diagonal streets...they're evil :p

amonkie 01-26-2008 04:13 AM

I will most likely be having finals in this time window.. but never say never ... I'll keep my ears and eyes open on this thread.

abaya 01-26-2008 05:02 AM

Sweet, this all sounds great. Too bad we cannot stay for a proper visit, but at least we'll get to meet some of the Chicago Gang in person. :) Are the diagonal streets of Chicago anything like the diagonal streets of DC? Because those drive me CRAAAZY! Anyway, grid system is good, will of course keep you all updated.

The only problem will be once we're actually on the road, since we won't have internet... maybe not even a cell phone... but we'll figure something out. Do truck stops along I-90 have wireless??

paddyjoe 01-26-2008 05:10 AM

Ah well, i'll mail you a cold one.........:D

zkara 01-26-2008 05:25 AM

Sounds like Halx and I need to think about making a trip to Philly or Chicago for this :)

That would be awesome. We have a genuine shortage of Good Beer in Iceland. Any chance of shipping it internationally? ;)

Zkara... incidentally, we are flying in and out of JFK for this trip... maybe we could save you the trip, if you could meet us at the airport or Penn Station or something. Penn Station is going to be a bit short on time (we might have an hour to spare), but on the way back we'll fly directly to JFK, and ought to have at least a couple of hours for drinks or dinner or something... maybe we could meet you (and whomever else is around!) then? Will keep in touch...

I think there are some rest areas that offer wireless. I could be completely wrong, but I swear I can remember seeing signs at some rest areas noting there was wireless access.

And I'm with shesus on this: it seems that a lot of the people I'm interested in meeting are visiting Chicago while we're not there.

This is definitely a conspiracy.

I've never been to DC so I don't know what those are like, but Chicago's diagonal streets are straight, just diagonal. They're actually not that bad, just requires a little extra thought to keep yourself oriented. They only time it gets really weird is when two diagonal streets are near each other, but that's not too often.

.

Just drove from Madison, WI to Oak Park on 1-90/290 this morning.

I've often used the wireless at the Belvidere service plaza. Also somewhere south of Chicago on I-80 -- the Lincoln plaza maybe. Quite a few of the N. Illinois service/rest areas have free wireless.

Awesome. Thanks for this info... we'll pack a laptop, then.

Bucktown is also right next to I-90. I live right off of North Ave. I'd be delighted to finally meet up with some TFP'ers.

filtherton 02-11-2008 06:12 AM

If any of you fuckers want to, you know, continue up i-90 for a while, then hop on i-94, i'm just 5 or 6 hours away from chicago. Come on, i know you want to, it's -7 outside.

absorbentishe 02-12-2008 07:33 PM

If you want to stop in Toledo, I can make it happen here!

SecretMethod70 04-09-2008 11:57 AM

Any word on this? Happen to have a more specific idea of the date? I need to plan ahead to be sure I'm free on the right day :|

Honestly no, because we won't know our driving schedule until we're actually on the road (I've never driven across the country before). I do know that we'll most likely be departing from Washington DC on May 1st, and since it takes 11 hours to get to Chicago (as the Google Maps bird flies), I don't know if we could cover that all on the first day. So should we say May 2nd for now?... it might only be possible to meet for lunch then, so that we can stay on the road for the afternoon/evening... (we're trying to get to Seattle by May 6th, without killing ourselves on the way). Thoughts?

chewybaca96 04-10-2008 04:52 PM

well i'm on I-80, not I-90. Though not for long as it looks like I will be moving to NY soon. Look out Halx, here I come.

koli70 04-18-2008 08:33 AM

I live right off I-90, Rapid City, SD. You dont really know me but if you stop here feel free to give me a holler. I like meeting new people.

abaya 04-22-2008 02:28 AM

Our take-off date approacheth. I'm gonna need some PM's from you folks, with contact info/addresses or something, if we're going to make this happen. We're looking at taking off from DC on May 1st... can we get to Chicago by that night? If not, then May 2nd will have to do...

As for the rest of the country, we have no idea what our schedule will be. Not even sure that we'll have a laptop, though we're looking to get some kind of throwaway cell phone for the trip. Anyway, let me know how to find y'all!

Shauk 04-22-2008 02:31 AM

you know what would be sweet, showing up in Seattle May 14th for my show/birthday, buhaha, I needs me an audience :D

not likely tho eh?

anyway uh, pm me with your preferred method of contact eh?

I got myspace, I got mobile IM, I got regular ol telephone numbers, i got telepathy... actually scratch that last one.
