South Chicago June 28-29th? ** Now with Pictures! **
Hello all,
Just gotten word that my ship may (may, being the operative word) be loading sand in the Calumet River on the 28/29th of this month. This is the link (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en...4326&z=13&om=1) to the google map showing the street address of the dock (the ship is going to be in the river mouth just up and to the right of the street). I don't know what the security facilities are like at this dock,I don't know what the area is like, how far it is to downtown, what the public transit system is like in this area. But this is where we are planning on being if anyone is interested in meeting up. If it is feasible, I certainly plan on visiting downtown Chicago, but like I say, I'm not sure what the transit services are like. Usually we get taxi's everywhere we go, but as downtown is about 11 miles away as the crow flies, that could get $$$. My internet usage is going to be sketchy, so if anyone is interested, post here and email me at: lucifer@constantvoyager.com

On a good day I can find the lake and my office from where I live
if I can figure out how to get there - or one of the more intrepid chicagoans can explain to me - without using north/south/east/west - how to get somewhere -I'll break my long standing non-meetup rule and meet up

Update:
So, the new loop motors arrived and we are currently unloading in Milwaukee. we should be leaving (all going well) around 6 am local time which will put us in Calumet River around 3pm (1500 for us sailors) for about 36 hours. Looking forward to seeing anyone.

Lucifer - I'm trying to find a way to get down there this afternoon, but it doesn't look good. My afternoon at work isn't going to let me cut out early, and the wife is going out with friends tonight, leaving me home with the kid. If he didn't go to be so frickin' early I'd bring him down because he loves anything mechanical, but there's a pretty strict 6:30 bedtime at my house.

Update:
Today is too late, we are getting in too late, and I'm too tired to do anything. I'm meeting the Magnicifcent Maleficent downtown tomorrow (Friday) at some "globe thingy" near the Sears Tower at 5:30pm local, to walk out to the lake, and hopefully grab a bite on the way. Hope you guys can make it too.

Okay, so I may have mentioned previously in another post about how my life at sea is subject to a lot of whims and things beyond my control...This is one of them. The loading rig here in Calumet isn't the usual-piece-of-crap-800 tonnnes/hour that we usually get; it's a state of the art 1200 tonnes/hour wonder machine. This means that we are loading at nearly twice the rate I was planning on. Which means that this meetup may or may not happen depending on how things go tonight and tomorrow. The operator thinks that they will be done by midnight; but I think that it will be sooner, maybe around 7 local time. I will try to let everyone know tomorrow what is happening. If you want, email me a cell# at lucifer@constantvoyager.com and I'll call when I'm more certain of things.
Sorry to get everyone's expectations up, and then change plans at the last minute, but that's how my life works in this job, subject to a lot of things beyond my control. This meetup is ON! The loading rate is slow, they are thinking about midnight for getting done, and the 3rd mate is covering my watch at 4, so I'll be heading downtown. See you there...

I'll be there too. Let me know if the time changes. I'm available from about 4 pm on, although I have to head home fairly early.

50% success rate on the Chicago meetup. I managed to meet The_Jazz, but we missed roachboy at the Sears Tower (we were up on the skydeck and he was on the street) and Maleficent got held up at work. Jazz and I were enjoying a beer at the Berghoff, and my phone rang; it was the ship telling me to haul my ass back right quick as they had decided not to take as much cargo. While I was waiting for the bus to arrive, my phone rang again and the 3rd mate informed me that the loading rig had just broken down and they would be leaving as soon as they could get the boat straight with ballast and they were waiting for me, but they wouldn't wait all night!
I jumped on the express bus south and kept in cell communication with the ship every couple of minutes. Made it, but it was cutting it a little close for comfort. Here is The_Jazz and I at The Berghoff (the first bar in Chicago to get a license (#1) after prohibition.

damn...it did not occur to me that you and mister jazz could be several hundred feet above where i was standing. too limited in my thinking at times i am.
'tis a shame that the upconnect fizzled at such close quarters. i had very little time, tho.... glad to see that an event took shape regardless.

Sorry we couldn't overcome the vertical distance, roachboy. Hollywood has led me to believe that we must have been mear feet from one another horizontally, but there were still 3 blocks separating us.
A good time was had by both, although I won't be ordering the Berghoff's heffeweisen again. And Lucifer, I forgot that I was going to show you Chicago Liquor License #1. It was about 20 feet behind where we were sitting.
