Two commercials I absolutely love right now.

First, there's the mini-van commercial with the soccer mom folding stuff up. She's wearing a black pleated mid length skirt in every shot, but one, a beige sweater, pearls, and classic black pumps. I have a crush on her. I mean, seriously, I'd consider a weekend in Vegas with her if I could distract Grace somehow. Whenever I hear that distinctive music come on, it's time to stop whatever we're doing so Gilda can watch the commercial and drool. It's a good thing I have an understanding wife.

The second one is the Target commercial with Kermit the Frog and some cowboy playing dueling guitar/banjo, with Kermit laying down some serious smack talk and then backing it up.

Kermit: My grandmother plays faster than that.
Kermit: I see what you did. I see what you did.

I laugh out loud every time I see it.

My all time favorite commercial:

Off in the distance,
The games dragging on,
There's strikes on the batter,
Some runners are on.
Then suddenly everyone's looking at me,
My mind has been wandering, what could it be,
I look all around then I look up above,
And a baseball falls into my glove.

I play right field,
It's important you know,
Ya gotta know how to catch,
Ya gotta know how to throw,
That's why I play in right field,
Way out where the dandilions grow.

I use this with my students every year. It's my one of my favorite sports poems, and it comes from a soft drink commercial.

What are some of your favorite commercials and why?

My favorites right now have to be the Peyton Manning commercials where he's supposed to be a fan of people doing everyday jobs. The part that always makes me laugh is when he's sitting at the counter at a diner, holding up a large letter "D" in one hand and "CAF" in the other. He then yells out "decaf" and kicks the counter twice while the waitress just rolls her eyes.

Toaster126 11-30-2005 10:37 PM

My favorite is the travel vacation site commercial where the teenager is prepping for a shower in the bathroom. He finishes brushing his teeth, walks over to the shower curtain, and pulls it. You hear a woman scream. He quickly closes it, and walks out saying, "Sorry Mom... and Dad."

Carno 11-30-2005 11:52 PM

LOL

Yeah that one where he walks in on his parents doing it is awesome :p

I rarely like any commercials, and rarely actually ever see or even hear them cause even when I'm watching TV I put it on mute and look away when commercials come on. I think I hate them because they try to be manipulative and I can see what theyre doing, unfortunetly most people can't so that bugs me. If commercials were alive I would hunt them down and shoot them in the head. :)

But creative ones are OK I suppose, but those are so rare anyways.

One of the few things that bugs me is when I ask people to mute commercials if I'm in the room doing something that requires me to be there. For some reason people don't like to do this and either out right refuse or forget by the time the next set of commercials are on. /boggle

I know it's cliche, but Geico commercials sometimes get to me. The one with the parody of reality tv, "tiny house", really made me laugh mainly because it was a spot on parody that managed to be both extreem to the point of being absurd, and yet feeasble as a reality show.

Hands down, this is every Canadian's favorite commerial.

Terry Tate, Office Linebacker series.

Best commercials of all time!

"You kill the Joe, You make some MO!!"

Derwood 12-01-2005 11:41 AM

The whole series of "Here's to you, Mr. ______" ads with the cheesy guy repeating everything in song

trickyy 12-01-2005 12:04 PM

tiny room was indeed funny.
beer commercials are sometimes funny (like the coors light choo-choo train going through a stadium) in an unintentional way
i like certain commercials for the music...the older hummer "search engine" ad, stoli frozen room, motorola razr

sgn43 12-01-2005 01:49 PM

I recently saw that Kermit commercial and I nearly cramped up from laughing. I never knew seeing Kermit the Frog trash talk would be so damn hilarious.

Latch 12-01-2005 03:33 PM

I actually like the one where a guy's just showing his ringtone (Dukes of Hazard theme), and starts singing along.... and that's it. That's the whole commercial. It's good.

I forgot about this one. The best part is when the boyfriend is trying to be romantic in the ridiculously small bed, and the girl gets a WTF look and screams, "Are you kidding me?"

That's 47 of them. I have them all on my iPod. My wife wonders why my iPod plays ads.

...and the 'cheesy guy' is David Bickler, the former lead singer of "Survivor" (Eye of the Tiger).

You an' me both Gilda, I just saw that commercial last night for the first time. I was captivated by her legs... her face, hair. everything. Unfortunately I don't think that my wife is as accommodating...

But aside from that, and the obvious Joe from the Molson commercial (thanks Feelgood) I am currently enjoying the cooking with cheese commercials.

- watered down colour film of an older couple throwing furniture out of a bedroom of their house, redecorating it, and then sitting down to dinner with their middle aged, single son. He says, 'by the way, Mom, Dad, I love what you've done with my room'

then an old lady bangs her cane on the sliding door from outside, and cackles: 'Can't get your kids to move out? STOP Cooking with Cheese!!!'

There's a couple of variations to this commercial.

Those are definitely the best ever. It's a shame they didn't make more of them.

Here's seven of them. Most never made it to the air. I have no idea where they were going with this campaign, it just died. Great stuff, though. I was sure that the following Super Bowl would have more Terry Tate, but it didn't. And what did it have to do with Reebok?

I love the commercial for Brawny paper towels with the hunky guy frosting the cake...and then there's a puppy with frosting on its nose...aww, puppy. Aww, hunky guy holding puppy. Awww, hunky guy wiping the frosting off of the puppy's nose. Awwwwww.

Certainly looks like advertisers over there know how to reach their demographics :hmm:

I'm liking these a lot.

Did anyone else pick up on the "Cover sheet on the TPS reports" line? I love an Office Space reference. My middle school students used to think I had an obsession with my Swingline Stapler; they were allowed to borrow the crappy one the school provided, by the Swingline stayed on my desk or else!

There's a great for Miller that I love. Don't know if it's on over in the states.

It's all done in a single shot, without any cuts. A guy is at a house party and gets up and gets on a bike. The street is on a hill, sloping down to our right. He free-wheels down the hill, the camera tracks him all the time, passing some things in the back ground; some guys playing basketball, a mechanic, a woman walking etc. He then stops at a shop, walks in buys Miller and walks out again (still the same shot; not cuts). He gets back on the bike, and continues freewheeling down the hill, passing all of the things we waw the first time, in reverse order. Then arrives back at the house party, having free wheeled down the hill all the time!

Miller: Genuinely easy.

Kind of hard to explain in text, but I think its great!

noahfor 12-04-2005 12:43 AM

Skittles commercials.

cyrnel 12-04-2005 01:32 AM

All time? I'm sure plenty escape me at this hour. Lately I mute or fast forward. It's hard to burn time on all the bad repetition.

Ridley Scott's 1984 was great.
I'll never get Weinhard's "Well now. Where you going with all that beer?" line out of my head.

Grasshopper Green 12-04-2005 10:02 AM

I don't watch much tv, so I rarely pay attention to the commercials. The one with the guy walking in on his mom and dad in the shower is pretty funny though.

I thoroughly enjoy the Bud Light Real Men of Genius radio ones. They are hilarious.

guthmund 12-04-2005 08:46 PM

It's kind of old, but I saw it today and it still made me chuckle.

It's a Nextel commercial. Two guys are dancing...well, sort of dancing to this song (I don't know the name, but it keeps repeating..."Oh, baby, baby. Oh baby baby) with one guy manning the radio.

I also really like the Peyton Manning commercial that's already been mentioned and the Terry Tate collection is funny. Especially when they bring in the 'rookie.' :)

ngdawg 12-04-2005 09:44 PM

A new one for Virgin Atlantic cracked me up. Two men going through courtship, engagement and a wedding ceremony, romantic music playing. One man is obese and slovenly, the other an average good looking guy.. after the wedding, a voice-over says: 'if you'd wanted to sleep with him, you'd have married him', showing the heavy guy snoring away on the other's shoulder in a crowded plane.
I love commercials that don't tell you right off what it is they're selling :D

fightnight 12-05-2005 08:11 PM

The ones right now that have been killing me are the snickers ones, there are 2 of them that I have seen. They both use the tag line "it's only good if you eat it".

In the one the guy tries to throw it on the fire, then runs out of the school screaming.

In the other one the same guy (i think) has them taped to his head to hide his baldness, and his co-workers try to stage an intervention.

Those commercials are fantastic.

Jimellow 12-06-2005 10:51 AM

Dr. Peppers current commercials are really well done.

The best is the one that features the couple, with the man doing all these kind, and embarassing, things for his girl, only to leave her when she takes his Dr. Pepper while resting on the couch. This is all set to Meatloaf's "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That), and the song works perfectly for the commercial.

The second involves a date at a restaurant where the guy is rambling on about himself, and the girl zones out as the guy, and others in the restaurant, start singing a catchy, but unintelligble, song. Not as impressive or well done, but still very amusing in its own right.

My favorite stupid funny commercial is the Nextel one in which the office workers are dancing erotically to some 80's techno hit, and are interrupted by their boss inquiring about them not doing work. After reporting to him that everything is accounted for, the guy with the stereo starts the music again, and they resume dancing. Hilarious.

Hahahahahaha

I missed it the last time I saw these. "Felcher & Sons"- if you're curious go look up what felching is, i'm not going to describe it

without a doubt the new Napster ad: www.napstergirl.com. easily one-ups that GoDaddy girl ad and the Paris hilton burger porn thing. now, if only all ads were like this, i might actually enjoy television (although i can't imagine this'll ever be shown on tv).

i think that song is an old muppet song. either from the muppet show or sesame street. if it wasn't written for them, they made it popular in my book.

i love that commercial because it matches my short attentio....

I liked the Geico spots with the cavemen. The original one where they are in studio shooting the spokesman and he makes some caveman reference and the boom guy (a caveman) throws down the boom, points at the guy and exclaims "NOT cool man, NOT cool!" is hilarious.

simonrex22 12-12-2005 09:22 PM

One commercial i like right now is the one for the "meteor proof truck". It starts out with two guys camping and video taping. The one guy is singing "bowm chicky bowm and da wicky wicky wicky".

Geico has some great commercials--I too really enjoy the cavemen spots. I also get a massive chuckle out of the salmon/bear Geico ad--I love the irrelevance of it.

I was about to post some snarky comment about how superior I am for not having TV but then I realized I'd just spent the past ten minutes reading about commercials...
