"Schindler's List" is one of the all time best movies ever made, IMO.
But for some reason, I think "Heaven Knows Mr. Allison" is another real good war pic to add to this list. Of course, yes, "Saving Private Ryan" was great and "Band of Brothers" was an extremely well done series, too. "Stalag 13" is another all time fav of mine. Too many good characters to list!

I agree with everything listed and would like to add "Enemy at the Gates".
A Hollywood-ized "based on a true story" movie, but entertaining none the less.

My professor of Leadership made us watch that one, and dissect every scene. Simply the best movie on men and how to lead them. 10/10.

I like movies that are set during WWII and are involved with the conflict, but aren't necessarily out-and-out war movies. And I like Humphrey Bogart -- a lot. So there are a lot of these on the list.
The Big Red One -- It's on a few lists here, but not too many. A revisionist war movie if ever there was one. AND apparently a longer, "director's cut" version is about to come out on DVD. So if you're a fan of this film and director Sam Fuller in particular, look out for it. Kelly's Heroes -- the ultimate cynical war movie. Seems more relevant every year. The Pied Piper -- Obscure, but worth seeing. An elderly and somewhat cranky English gentleman on vacation is caught short by the fall of France and tries to make his way to the English Channel through Nazi territory. He hates kids, but everybody who helps him asks if, in return, he'll take their child to England with him. After a while he's hauling six or seven with him, and the Nazis are catching up... Very suspenseful. Casablanca -- Well, of course. Sahara -- Fine movie with Bogart's tank lost in the North African desert and looking for water after a big battle, picking up a column of survivors along the way. The Great Escape. Hell is for Heroes. Not that well known, a lot different than most WWII flicks, and really worth seeing. Don Siegel (Dirty Harry) directed, and it's all pretty no-holds-barred. Interesting cast, starting with Steve McQueen, and going on to a lot of non-standard choices like Bobby Darin, James Coburn, and even Bob Newhart. But this is _not_ a comedy. |

Kelly's Heroes, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Patton are all legitimately among my favorite movies of any genre.

Another that's quite good (IMHO), although it predates WWII, is called "Hitler: The Rise of Evil" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346293/)
It was a made-for-TV movie, I believe, but I thought it was a pretty good representation of Hitler's rise to power before the start of the war. I liked the actor that played Hitler (Robert Carlyle)... he got the speeches down pat pretty good, and was quite good at portraying just how imbalanced this man must have been. |

Maybe not so good, just that I remember them.
The Flying Tigers To Hell And Back and yes, Gregory Peck could play the ultimate father figure! Did it at least two times. Last edited by flat5; 01-01-2006 at 03:07 PM.. |
