Cinema Industry: Fun jobs having to do with music/video editing/film editing etc

I am a physics major at a pretty good school. I am also a professional skier in the winter and am getting into heli-ski guiding.

I plan on using my physics degree to get me into the air national guard. I want to fly fighter jets part time (1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year).

I had it all planned out...

One problem...

I love music. I love music and movies so much. Every time I am studying physics or working on some bitch ass physics problem that takes me a week to figure out...I always think about how cool it would be to be working on films like the matrix or lord of the rings or editing music.

I dont know what do to.

Do you think that liking music would translate into liking editing music? Im afraid that if I switch tracks i will end up with a job that i wont like and even worse might make me not like music or film as much as I do now.

So, what kind of jobs are there in the film/music buisness that are fun/interesting?

I think it might be kinda like acting...its great if you make it but there are thousands and thousands of actors out there who suck or who are good but still dont make shit for a living. I dont want to end up mixing music for the local wedding singer or some private shitty ass production.

So, how hard is it to get one of the good jobs at a good company? Whats it like as an editor? Lots of hours? Tedious?

I am way to far into my physics program to quit...but once i gradute...i might want to still do the heli-ski guide (march through may) and the fighter pilot thing (1 weekend a month) AND work with music in some studio.....

What options are there for obtaining a degree that would help with getting a job as an editor for a film? My current school only has a general music degree....i dont think that would help much.

What are the names of the top schools in the country for film/music editing?

Thanks
Allen

Welcome to my life.

Okay, I'll try to make this short, but I'm also an insatiable music lover, just so you know. I have a music degree, and far too much computer training, too.

For music editing: you most likely will need music training to move forward in that field. Knowing the basics of how songs are put together (chorus, verse, bridge, etc) would increase your chances of getting ahead.

With your physics background, you might ask yourself what you plan on doing with it. Loudspeaker design relies very heavily on physics, so you could be around music while creating new gear. You could also work at some audio design places, too. These two items would allow you to have music in yrou daily life. Unfortunately, a lot of what you listen to might well be test tones.

I'll give you a little insight. I spent two years working as a DJ on weekends. While fun, I found that I got really tired of music and always drove home in silence. It just was too much.

As far as interesting or fun jobs, it really depends on what you find interesting. I personally hated computer programming, and found it very tedious. Other people absolutely love it. Woudl that be described as a fun or interesting job? Not by me, but certainly by others. So, what interests YOU?

Your best bet, really, would be to chat with someone doing the job you are interested in. I know that might be a bit difficult, but if you can get yourself to a studio or place where this is done, most people absolutely love to talk about THEIR job. You'll get some real insight there. You can also ask just what type of education they would look for.

In the end, what did jujueye do? Jujueye went with computers. Seriously, I love music so much that I didn't want anything to interfere with it. I sense that music and film might be that sacred to you, too. You're mixing business with pleasure. It could very well work, so do some research. For music editing, try downloading some audio apps (CoolEdit 2000, etc) record a song, and do some editing. See if you like it. If you decide to stay with physics, there are hundreds of things to learn from how sound works in your own room and house. Hobbies are never ending fun. While music is listed for me as a hobby, its more of a passion. And at the end of the day, I'm rarely tired of it.

Do some research, bud.

Well I am only about 3 semesters away from completing my physics degree so I wont change now.

I see where your going witht the buisness pleasure thing. I have first hand experiance at that ( I am a full time ski instructor in Utah during the winter). It becomes so much like work that you dont even ski on your off days.

I think ill stick to listening to music :}
