What movies should NOT be re-made?
There are two parts to this:
1) What movies should NOT be re-made. and 2) What movies should not have been re-made? -------------------- 1) To Kill a Mockingbird Patton Hard Day's Night The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 2) The Out-Of-Towners Brian's Song |
1. Any movie that is recognized by the industry as being special in its own time. Great movies always have provenance, and should not be remade. Nominated for best picture Oscar should do it.
2. Brian's Song. Rollerball. The Getaway. |
The Original Star Wars trilogy is going to be remade by Lucas in CG within the next twenty years (kinda like Final Fantasy) and personally I think it's a horible idea because it won't be as magical as the originals (though still cool).
And for the record, I didn't mind the special editions (however I didn't like how Greedo shot first) |
Casablanca should not be re-made.
Psycho should not have been re-made. |
1. Fight Club, The Wizard of Oz, Patton is a great one warrrrr, Any Tarantino movie (I'm of course thinking 30-40 years from now, somebody will want to.) Any Coen Brothers movie, any Kubrick movie, any Terry Gilliam movie, etc. Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, Trainspotting.
2. Charlies Angels (remake? at least from TV), come to think of it almost any TV show, The Avengers, The Brady Bunch, Scooby-Doo, The Flinstones, that list is endless. 3. My favorite remakes: Romeo + Juliet, Great Expectations, Oceans 11, Cruel Intentions, I'm sure there are some more good ones out there somewhere. Remakes are made from anything these days though, not just books anymore, 12 monkeys was a remake of a bunch sequential still photographs that told a story, "La Jete" I think it was called. |
Movies should not be remade, period.
What really pisses me off is when Hollywood remakes foreign movies. What was the point of remaking "Priscilla"? |
For me it is tooooo late. Adam West was and still is Batman. Keaton & Kilmer, what jokes! Superheros will never die until they remake them.

Foreign films are way better than these massive projects that Hollywood mogul churls out on a weekly basis. |
1. Any movie with "I know what you did..." in the title
2. Any movie with "I still know what you did..." in the title... |
They're remaking Day of the Dead. If it turns into on of these teeny-bopper, slasher flicks, I'm gonna go ballistic.
So, if Romero's involved I say remake it. If Freddie Prince Jr. is involved, I say leave it alone. (I had to edit my post because I originally wrote "Freddie Prince" which gave the post a grisly, but humorous, tone that wasn't intended.) |
1. Teenwolf
2. Psycho |
I'm kinda pissed that Tim Burton may be thinking of remaking Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Another Gene Wilder he'll never find and there is nothing wrong with the original.
|
1. Any good movie.
2. That remake of "Charade" |
1. Scarface, Pulp Fiction, and many more...
2. THE SHINING |
Remakes on the whole are terrible things. Ocean's 11, as much as I hate George Clooney, is one of the few exceptions.
As far as foreign films being remade, sometimes this is a good thing. People aren't going to go see a foreign film but they are more likely to want to watch the remake and realize there is an original. Do you think would have wanted to see Ringu if The Ring hadn't been made? I've been trying to find time to watch Abre Los Ojos after seeing Vanilla Sky. So, sometimes this can be a good thing and sometimes you don't want to mess with perfection. |

RAMONES!, I was interested in your pick of The Shining as a movie that shouldn't have been re-made. Stephen King always hated the Stanley Kubrick version, and to be honest it wasn't very close to the novel. The re-make was Stephen King's scripted re-make, so it was more true to the novel. However, I'm so comfortable with the Kubrick version that it almost seems like two different stories to me now. And it seems that most of King's great stories don't translate very well to the screen (with a few very notable exceptions). |
wow!
Warrrreagl, when i read the subject of this thread, i immediately thought, Mockingbird, and Patton. and there they are. i don't think they should touch Gandhi or On the Waterfront either. cujo, i think i'll shoot Burton myself if they try to remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! on the other hand, they definitely shouldn't have re-made Planet of the Apes (again a Burton tragedy). |
No one should ever, ever, fucking ever try and remake Godfather 1 and 2.
Planet of the Apes should never have been remade. I mean really, what the fuck was that piece of shit? |

i know that there is no way that it was as good as the first one |
1: Any movie
2: All of them. |

Psycho should not have been
A Clockwork Orange should not be, it could never be improved on |
Thomas Crown Affair is definitely an exception to the rule. Just saw it 2 weekends ago, quite an improvement on the original.

Please gods, never let anyone remake:
Breakfast at Tiffany's Casablanca Lawrence of Arabia The Matrix Fight Club ... the list goes on and on. In general, I am opposed to remaking any movie, song or TV show. Words cannot convey how unhappy I am with the trend of American television attempting to harness good British comedy for their own means. It will never work in this country and if you want proof of that, watch BBC's Coupling (its on DVD, you can rent it) and then wait til this fall when NBC releases its version of the show. *breathes deeply* Sorry, needed to get that out of my system. On the other side of the coin though, there are movies that I know would have been better with just slight casting changes. One of the first thoughts that comes to mind is getting Alec Baldwin out of the Jack Ryan role. |

There is only one real, The Wizard of Oz.
gotta agree with juanvaldes; most people dont like remakes, the idea of remaking some old(er) movies is interesting, yet usually not done adequately. for example, if they remade Tron with kick ass 2003 graphics, then yes it would be cool, but they would change it and it wouldn't be good, it would only look better. |

The Exorcist.

OMFG!! I can't believe they would touch Day Of The Dead!!! Criminals!!! They should at least remake Dawn of the Dead instead. IMO that is the one that sucked. They ran around a mall all day and pushed the zombies away with their hands, how scary is that?
Psycho was definitely the worst remake ive ever seen. |

As far as Planet of the Apes remake goes the ending was true to the original story. Casting Wahlburg in the lead may have been the down, fall in my opinion. Never saw the original Oceans 11 but I enjoyed the remake. What sucks is they are talking about making Ocean's 12. Stupid stupid stupid. |
