I'm thinking about monsters inc and shrek . Remembered how stupid I thought they were.

Does anybody else think it's exceedingly idiotic to have outtakes on an animated movie ? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of outtakes?

The outtakes where Shrek was all hairy and stuff actually happened. It comes from the programming for the animation. Now an outtake where a character messes up a line, usually was simply done on purpose.

I thought the ones in Shrek were really cool to see how just a little change in the programming, could really change the whole scene.

(it helps that I have an interest in animation and video editing!)

I thought it was funny. I mean, it was all meant in good humour. It gave the notion that the characters on the screen weren't just something that was crunched out of a computer. Rather, they were real actors who made real mistakes. I don't know. I guess it's all in how you perceive the illusion.

I always thought that outtakes in an animated movie were there so that the animators could have some fun. But I do enjoy the outtakes in shrek/monsters inc were 1 little change in the programming caused the characters to look completely different (this is probably because I love to see what they tried to do to get the look that they used)

The first time I saw that whole thing (cartoon outakes that is) .. which I believe was on cartoon network with some of their standard cartoons .. I thought it was amusing... but yea if this starts being the "thing" I think I would scream.

I like the outtakes, but liek it was mentioned earlier.. it helps if that is your main interest in the movie (or career path, major, whatever). They are pretty pointless, but think of it as a way to get "extra" stuff for the cash taht was spent rendering and animating the movie. It's not like they spent extra money to make them versus all the parts they cut out to make the movie fit under 120 mins or so.

I think outtakes for cartoons are innovative. It's not something that a person would expect watching a cartoon movie. It brings something fresh.
And of course, it's pretty amusing watching them mess up! lol

I thought the outtakes in Animated movies are great! The fact that the programmers took the time to think up some funny outtakes as well as the time to program them adds a little something extra to the show as a whole.

The Shrek outtakes are great but the best is Toy Story with Buzz Lightyear on the shelf in the package and he farts...hilarious.

Having worked on the series and the movie Beavis and Butthead, it's a different creative outlet for the animators. Some of the animators put up on their walls some funny drawings that they create during meetings and creativity brainstorms, and IMHO it's a neat way to see the animators get creative and let loose.

silly or not the Shrek outtakes were amusing, but personally I didn't like the Monsters Inc ones. Perhaps becasue the characterisation was done better in Shrek.

Are the outtakes any more idiotic than talking monsters in another dimension?

Where is it reasonable to draw your suspension of disbelief? I think they are clever and funny. Extra bang for my buck!

And think about this, cartoons have voice actors right? And sometimes they don't get their dialogue right on the first take. So some of it can be based off of voice outtakes. Not all of them but some of them.

Video game outtakes are even worse. How about the end of Warcraft III? That was not only retarded, but tedious.

Yeah, usually its the actors that screw up the lines and have a good time (if they are doing their lines in the same room together that day) and the animators who base the actions on what happened in the SB. Then again, sometimes they just enjoy doing silly stuff.

OH C'MON!!! I think the outtakes are a scream!!!! A lot of cartoons/CGI comedy movies do small take-offs on other movies and shows. (ie: In Shrek there was a take-off on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) So...the animators taking things a bit further and also paralleling the outtakes that they sometimes do in comedy movies are HYSTERICAL!!! AND...the fact that they're not real people makes it even MORE funny!!!

I thought the outtakes were from scenes that they decided to take out (or changes they decided to make) before the movie was released.

Or like THE MAC GOD said: actors that screw up the lines and the animators work with that.

i like the idea that the movie companies are paying these voice actors and animators to do like 2 minutes worth of phony outtakes. and i thinkthey're pretty funny now and then. toy story is the first movie i remember them doing that for.

The first time I saw outtakes in an animated movie (Toy Story or Toy Story 2) I thought it was great! It was something I never expected. After a couple movies it gets pretty old. That's probably why Pixar didn't do it for Finding Nemo.

I dunno, i find the humour of them a bit redundant... outtakes are done to death, and they're just not so funny now. i like the way they make the characters seem a bit more real, but at the same time it has a kind of weird postmodern twist that tells you it's a movie and the characters are aware of it...

In terms of creativity they are pretty cool, but I don't think I would be looking to do outtakes with my characters if I was an animator, I might as well just make them fuck on my lunch hour.

And on the topic of actors goofing up and them working it around that... I think that is probably one of the ways it works. And in which case, it's still not funny, for the above reason. In my opinion.

I don't see what the problem is with it, it's a joke, you laugh. It's something to do during the credits. How seriously do you have to take yourself to feel insulted by this?
It pretty much goes back to Roger Rabbit, where they present cartoon characters as being real people. I like that idea, adds a sparkle of magic to the whole thing.
