Are interracial couples still taboo in Television and Movies?
Is it still a taboo to show interracial couples on television on movies? You just don't see on TV(maybe for the exception of PBS) or movies. Why is that? Are they afraid Interacial couples will tear the fabric of society?

Well, there was Fred and Gunn from Angel. Other than that...hmmm...can't think of any off the top of my head (other than Olivia and Giles from Buffy, but we only saw her, what...twice?)
As for why we don't see interracial couples that often...*shrug* |
I've seen several interracial couples on some daytime soaps. I've also heard that CSI is leading towards an interracial couple. ER, The West Wing and Ally McBeal also featured interracial romances. There are more. Doesn't seem unusual to me at all anymore.

Off the top of my head, in \"Friends\", Ross had two interracial relationships, and in \"Sex and the City\", both Miranda and Samantha dated black guys. So although there aren\'t many, I wouldn\'t call it taboo.

i remember in boy meets world, shaun dated a black girl.
i dont think its a taboo.... if disney shows it to little kids, it cant be bad |
In 24, President Palmer was dating a white girl I believe!

Degrassi: The Next Generation has a lot of interacial couples. I would love if ER had the rocker young guy have a relationship with the Indian Dr. I don't keep track of their names I just ike to watch :o

Joan of Arcadia had an interracial couple until all of the black characters on the show "mysteriously disappeared" :hmm:
Will and Grace had some interracial shenanigans. Can't think of any movies off the top of my head. Unless you count Mace Windu and Yoda. :D |
perhaps being able to name a handful of shows at best is the proof in the pudding.
lets simply use the nielsen ratings from last week: top 10 primetime shows 1. monday night football (remember the terrell owens-nicollette sheridan towel shedding fiasco a few weeks ago!) 2. everybody loves raymond (none) 3. csi: miami 4. csi (i think two of the workers are enjoined) 5. two and a half men (none) 6. without a trace (?) 7. nfl monday showcase 8. desperate housewives (though hispanics are represented, other races aren't. no interracial couples) 9. 60 minutes (perhaps lesley stahl and ed bradley can hook up?!??) 10. nfl sunday fox post game (james brown and terry bradshaw?!) top 10 cable shows 1. nfl (ravens-colts) (ray lewis & peyton manning?! 2. nfl (falcons-panthers) (mike vick and jake delhomme?!) 3. wwe raw zone 4. sportscenter (stuart scott and chris berman?! 4. wwe raw 6. fairly odd parents 6. spongebob squarepants 8. spongebob squarepants 10. spongebob squarepants 10. sportscenter suffice it to say, the shows are few and far in between. it seems as when there is a couple, it's generally not a focal point of the show, and generally a short-lived relationship. |
there was an snl skit about ten years ago with chris elliot on this topic
an ad agency put together a toothpaste commercial featuring a prominent interracial kiss, i think they wanted to play it during nascar funny on two levels, as i didn't think that the issue is so important anymore (still you don't see it in commercials yet) but many entertainers are mixed themselves. and you probably know someone in an interracial relationship if you live in a larger city. i'd say it is more common in movies than tv. |
