It's a great movie, one of my all time fav's. It's one of those cult movies that the first time you watch you think 'Ok, that was a bit weird, but good.' and each time you watch it you get more out of it. It grows on you!

Just saw it the other night. That was one fucked up movie, Good, but really weird. Reading some posts on the thread kind of helped me understand it a tad better though. Pretty confusing movie.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. However, I have a few problems with the end. For example, isn't the world still going to end? He didn't save anyone in the end, right? Because if the jet engine still fell on him that means that in the 28 days that portal is still going to open and suck everything into it. There are other issues I have, but it still wasn't enough to stop me from buying it right after I saw it.

Yes but this time the jet engine fell in the right place (ie, same "universe" as the plane)

For the engine to fall though there has to be that portal and this means that portal is going to suck everything into it, right? And if thats true, he didn't really affect anything.

I think the best idea is to ignore any paradox problems. Don't worry about where/when exactly the jet engine came from, but just think about how the chain of events of the movie are affected by Donnie dying or surviving.

Something that struck me about this movie, is that I really see it as an anti-"It's a Wonderful Life" story, in a sense. In "It's a Wonderful Life", Jimmy Stewart gets to see what the world is like if he is never born. In Donnie Darko, Donnie gets to see what the world is like if he doesn't die. The end result, is that Donnie appreciates what fate has planned for him (similar to Jimmy Stewart's lesson). He dies for a reason. I think the main reason is to save Gretchen, although he is also witness to many other effects.... every time I see DD, I want there to be some direct reference to It's a Wonderful Life... but the best I can come up with is It's a Wonderful Life->Jimmy Stewart->Harvey->Giant Rabbit->Frank, but I think that's a stretch

Also, I have a question I'd like to pose: Were Donnie's visions (Frank, the streams coming out of people's bodies) internal hallucinations/visions, or were they messages from an external source? My theory is that Donnie had some latent ability to see the future, but he couldn't consciously control it, though his subconcsious was able to use it to a certain extent and create the things he saw. Frank and the streams were manifestations of his ability to see the future, and also allowed him to see the wormholes that he and jet engine travel through at the end of the movie. At first, his subconscious uses his ability to protect him from his fate: he avoids getting crushed by the jet engine. Then, by the end of the movie, he realizes that it was a mistake to break from that fate.

And finally, it can be assumed that Grandma Death had the same abilities as Donnie, right? She was following her own stream to the mailbox all those times, but was never sure at what point in "space-time" or whatever that she was actually supposed to be there. Which is why she kept going back and forth. I think this acts as further evidence that seeing those streams is an ability that people are born with, and not some message from an external source.

p.s. I've read/heard most the extra info on the DVD, but I don't take that stuff to be the ultimate explanation to things.... I'd just like to hear other people's interpretations, or where my ideas go wrong.

I generallyu agree with the 'explanations' on the DVD - it's what I thought beforehand and the DVD just confirmed it - that Frank is a messenger from God, etc. Just my opinion though.

The thing that doesn't sit well with me about that is the Grandma Death part. I really believe that she could see the same things as Donnie, which means, if these visions were a message from god, that god was sending her these messages. But I don't see how that fits in, why would god give her the same visions? It seems a bit excessive if the only reason is to make sure she is there to get in the way of Frank's car. One could say the real reasons for god giving her these messages lie outside the movie... which would be another thing I don't like about the explanation, I'd like it to be explained by things we see in the final cut of the film.

The idea that seeing these visions come from an 'ability' and not a message makes more sense to me.

don't forget that Grandma Death used to be a nun and wrote the book on the whole existance of these mini-wormholes. So, obviously she has a connection to God and an understanding of this aspect of God's creation - and likewise her place in it.

How the hell did he get through the worm hole? Even his teacher said you would need a vehicle of some sort, and I dont think he was talking about a car seeing as how the portal was in the air.

Well, I finally saw the film. It is pure genious. Some of the cuts should have really been included in the film, but would not have taken away from anything else. I can't believe I waited so long to see the film. I will be buying the DVD now.
