My vote would either have to go to the Family Guy, or Neon Genesis Evangelion. Of course, there was the Robotech Box sets, or the Prisoner. Oh heck, I like 'em all, its not fair to say that I have a favorite.

For TV series, I have Mad About You seasons 1 and 2 and would love to get NYPD Blue when I can afford it.

Movie sets--I have the Back to the Future trilogy and I'm going to get all the Lord of the Rings and Matrix movies.

DS9, which is my favorite out of the Star Trek series. X-Files, everything up till season 7. 8 & 9 are at your own risk. The Simpsons, Futurama, & The Family Guy are must haves. I'm happy Rhino is releasing GI Joe on DVD. I just got the limited edtion box set with Snake Eyes!

Transformers season 1 and 2 are pretty fun if you enjoy having an 80's flashback. I've liked the Babylon 5 DVD sets. I'm really looking forward to getting the Indiana Jones DVD set that's coming out soon.

For some reason it's really, really hard to find box sets in my home town. I have two box sets... sorta. I have the Neon Genesis Evangelion box set (and the two movies of course! ) and the Record of Lodoss War box set... although the Lodoss War box set only has two DVD's... So any box sets I can find are my favorite

And oh yeah, this is farking hilarious:

My best bud watches this show religiously, along with the Angel spin-off, so it was extra hilarious. Only reason I can find in watching Buffy is because Michelle Tratchtengerg (sp?) is turning out to be quite a cutie. Other than that I really don't see why anyone would watch this series, but oh well.

Buffy's a funny one. I never thought I'd like it, but after seeing a few episodes, I got sucked into it. Very well written for a TV show, and the DVD extras are top notch - Joss Whedon, the series creator, is responsible for most of my favourite DVD audio commentary tracks. Of course YMMV, some people I know can't stand that show

If you are talking about the movie boxed set then don't. Not yet anyway. They are in the process of making Special Editions of all the movies so I'd just wait.

They are supposed to release the SEs of ST V & VI this year and Generations, etc starting next year.

Alright everyone. THE best dvd set out there right now is without a doubt . . . . . .Trailer Park Boys Seasons 1 & 2!!. I'm not sure if its just a Canadian show where I live or if other people have seen it. Its on Showcase late nite. To anyone who enjoys Family Guy and Simpsons . . . I LOVE those two shows but TPB's blows that shit out of the water. I recommend checking it out!!

Cheers

I'd have to cast my vote for the Criterion Brazil set as well.

Does it irritate anyone else that they never re-release the TV shows that have already been put on DVD, like the original "Star Trek" or "The Twilight Zone," which have been put two episodes to a disc, each disc sold separately, so you'd have to spend $500 to get 'em all?

If you're looking for something funny, Malcolm in the Middle's first season is out on DVD - hilarious. Another good one is the entire 36-episode season of Sports Night.

I also have the Godfather and Simpsons season 1 and 2. My wife has Buffy's first season.

Oh, it's just too hard to choose just 1 set, so here is a list of my current faves...

Star Trek Deep Space 9, Seasons 1-3 (all that's out so far)
Sopranos, Seasons 1-3 (all that's out so far)
24, Season 1 (all that's out so far)
Sex and the City, Seasons 1-4 (all that's out so far)
Friends, Seasons 1-3 (all I have so far)
Buffy, Seasons 1-4 (all that's out so far)

The only movie box set I've seen/purchased is the awesome Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring set. That one is just packed with extras that are quite nice.

I was skimming through this thread and saw one notable set not listed. Someone mentioned the Pixar box set, but I think they meant the box with both Toy Story movies and A Bugs Life. Instead, I'd say go for The Ultimate Toy Box if you want the Toy Story movies. It's three discs of Toy Story goodness. I just got this a few days ago, and spent an entire day watching the movies, listening to the commentaries (which are only included in this set), and playing with other special features. It rocks.

Save up, go out, and get the Hellsing box set, one of the best anime series ever! Also if you have the money there is a special edition box set of Cowboy Bebop that's just frikin great, the only problem being it cost's like 2 to 3 hundred doller's so it's a little pricey. As you can tell I would reccomend any anime box set because to me there basicly all good.

Cosmos (Carl Sagan)

But I doubly recommend the Cosmos DVD box as it hasn't been on tv for damn near 20 years and it is a major factor in what made me who I am today! (in a good way...)

Babylon 5. It's nerdly and it's sci-fi, but it's a damned good show.

Even people who don't normally like sci-fi TV get sucked in by the storyline.

Starts slow, but be patient. They're up through season 2 right now, and 3 is due this month.

The Complete Prisoner boxed set

This is regarded as one of the greatest tv series of all time.
It is old-school, however, but visionary. The series featured futuristic technology such as compact discs and wireless telephones years before they were a reality. The Simpsons has several episodes paying homage to the prisoner.
You can rent the discs individually in certain stores, or from online services such as Netflix.

The basic plot is a spy decides to quit his post, but the agency he works for will not let him go because he is too valuable. So he is captured and taken to 'the village', a place where many ex-spies are held and forced to live out their days in captivity. Of course, our man, Patrick McGoohan isn't about to cooperate with his captors, no matter how nice or brutal they treat him.

Review from amazon:
If a top-level spy decided he didn't want to be a spy anymore, could he just walk into HQ and hand in his resignation? With all that classified knowledge in his head, would he be allowed to become a civilian again, free to go about his life? The answer, according to the stylish, brilliantly conceived 1960s British TV series The Prisoner, is a resounding no. In fact, instead of receiving a gold watch for his years of faithful service, our hero (played by Patrick McGoohan) is followed home to his London flat and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a picturesque village where everyone is known by a number. Where is it? Why was he brought here? And, most important, how does he leave?
As we learn in Episode 1, Number 6 can't leave. The Village's "citizens" might dress colorfully and stroll around its manicured gardens while a band plays bouncy Strauss marches, but the place is actually a prison. Surveillance is near total, and if all else fails, there's always the large, mysterious white ball that subdues potential escapees by temporarily smothering them. Who runs the Village? An ever-changing Number 2, who wants to know why Number 6 resigned. If he'd only cooperate, he's told, life can be made very pleasant. "I've resigned," he fumes. "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered. My life is my own." So sets the stage for the ultimate battle of wills: Number 6's struggle to retain his privacy, sanity, and individuality against the array of psychological and physical methods the Village uses to break him.

So does he ever escape? And does he ever find out who Number 1 is? "Questions are a burden to others," the Village saying goes. "Answers, a prison for oneself." Within this complete 17-episode set (which contains the entire series), all is revealed. Or is it? --Steve Landau
