Great Teacher Onizuka
Has anyone ever watched or read trhe manga of GTO???
it is by far the funniest animation i have ever seen, its kinda perverted, but not horrible and its usually silly, but it also has some cool acion and stuff. i was just wondering if anyone here shares my fascination with this show. this show was apparently very popular in japan, there was even a live action tv show based on the original manga... anyways... |

GTO is a great series. The anime is pretty faitful to the Manga, which is rare these days. Even the US voice acting wasn't terribly horrible for it. the GTO live series cqan be downloaded with Bit Torrent from Animesuki.com, and that is pretty faithful to the story as well. I have been very pleased with all incarnations of this story. GTO is definately a series that if you liked it, you'lll want to buy a nice and LEGAL copy of it. Sure those DVD's from hongkong look appealing, but that's not helping TokyoPop out one bit, and they are taking a huge risk bringing over series that arent "giant robots fighting each other" or echhi. GTO is great.

I loved in the most recent volume of the manga (#11) they used some of the "Tomoko's Big Adventures" manga as back-up stories. When I first heard she had gotten her own spin-off, I was hoping it would appear stateside. Strangely enough, it seemed some of Tomoko's manga ended up as stories in the anime of GTO as well.
Now we need to get the earlier series published in America, the one that follows Onizuka and his buddy who owns the bike shop, back when they were in the gangs. (Thanks for the link, Ganguro. I've been trying to find the live-action GTO for sometime now!!) |

I fully agree Gambit i have seen one of the books from this series that one of my japanese friends had, but i could not read it(of course). it looked pretty cool. maybe they(tokyopop) will release it after the final GTO manga is released.

You know, when I read that title, I couldn't help but think of <a href="http://www.megatokyo.com/index.php?strip_id=153" target="_blank">Great Teacher Largo</a>.
Is that a common title for teachers in Japan?

Borrowed the DVD's from a friend to watch over a week I was off work but ended up watching one after the other till they were all finished. Laughed my ass off the whole time. Ended up watching most of them again later that week also.
Great series. Tried getting the Live action ones but never have any luck finding clients.

from what i hear from my japanses friends, the live action is actually a drama and not so much a comedy, they said it was really popular though in japan, just dont expect it to be nearly as light hearted.

They are right.. is is a drama, but the story is pretty faithful to the Manga. It was HELLA popular over there, one of the most watched shows at the time it aired. I wish US programming could get something like that. A good adaptation of a great story from an unlikely source...
