I think the dream is certainly the strongest piece of evidence, but clearly not the only thing pointing to that conclusion. There was the fact that he, supposedly a great blade runner, was unaware of the fact that replicants even had a termination date. Then there was his collection of pictures, something that replicants seem to do. In one scene he also seems to have the glowing eyes that replicants have.

Of course he doesn't think he's a replicant, just like Rachael didn't think she was either. The movie was ambiguous enough to allow you to believe whatever you want, but it seemed to me that the evidence was pretty strong in favor of him being a replicant.

Neither Deckard nor Rachael had termination dates. Rachael didn't even know she was a replicant, and I don't think that Deckard knew, either.

It would suck to spring up aware and full grown and know you were scheduled for termination in five-ten years.

yeah, i hate to say it, but i agree with you. i think i heard too much about how great the trilogy was. the first movie was good, but i was expecting to be amazed. after the second one, i didn't have the patience or energy to sit through the third. i just stopped caring about the characters.

blade runner was also okay but not overwhelming. perhaps i would appreciate these movies more if i had seen them when they came out. some movies don't age as well as others for me.

edit: lest these comments lead you to believe i'm completely tasteless, here are some older movies that i DO like...a lot
the third man, lawrence of arabia, bridge on the river kwai, anything by kubrick or hitchcock or fellini, sunset boulevard, the seventh seal,...
i don't like present day sci fi "blockbusters," at least i think i don't like them. i never watch them anymore, really. when i do, they suck (minority report).

Well, I can agree with you on one thing. The Godfather Part III is an abomination upon us all. The only way they can even sell the DVDs is to make you buy it with the trilogy box set. Thankfully now you can buy I & II a seperates.

I liked the book better... It was called "Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?" i think. I know it was written by Phillip K. Dick who was an awesome author way ahead of his time. His stories have been made into many movies including the more recent "minority Report" and "Paycheck". Y'all should check him out if you like blade runner's robot premise because P.K. Dick uses that or similar subjects very often.

Yes, an excellent movie. My wife was one who slept thru it. Love it or hate it apparently. Not necessarily a science fiction movie, I think it is mis-understood by alot of people, including me.

This is a pet peeve of mine... the misuse of the term "overrated" What's up with this trend lately? You can dislike the Godfather all you want, that's perfectly fine, but you can't say it's overrated.

A movie that stands the test of time and is considered a classic can't be overrated. It won't be your cup of tea, but it really isn't at all accurate to completely discredit it and say it's overrated.

Same with Blade Runner: it's not overrated. It's easily hailed as one of the best sci-fi movies ever created. That's like saying The Matrix was overrated.

2 examples of movies you can call "overrated" and be 100% completely accurate: The Ring and Titanic. People went nuts over them, but in terms of cinmatic quality and overall delivery, they weren't really that good and won't be discussed 20 years from now. They will not be used to inspire the creation of other classics that have yet to come.

Blade Runner is one of the foundations of good sci-fi.

Jeez, just because something doesn't blow up in the first 10 minutes doesn't mean ya gotta fall asleep and be bored with it

[edit]
People do this with music, too... someone will bust out some crap like, "Led Zeppelin/The Beatles are overrated". Usually at that point I'll ask them to give me a list of bands they like... and when they do, I can easily tell them which bands of theirs wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for the supposed "overrated" music.

Word Stompy.

I mean people who advance objections against movies like The Godfather based on facile and meaningless details like the lack of perfect realism in a the predigital era fail to recognise the film's true value. This being said, one of the other aspects of The Godfather which makes it a masterpiece is that the film works on a number of levels, simply experienced as a story, a moral tale, a deconstruction of American ideals and realities, an examination of power and human frailty and so many more.

In other news:

I believe that The Matrix is overrated, but allow me to qualify my answer. Firstly, a great number of people, when asked why The Matrix is so great claim that it is such an original idea. Wrong. I believe that the film was precedented by a number of others which were moreover more subtle and intelligent in their treatment of the philosophical themes, most notably Ghost in the Shell. Another claim is that the choreography is awesome, indeed it is, but certainly doesn't compare to Chinese kung fu films made years before, most notably is the fight choreography in Drunken Master II, Once Upon a Time in China, Fist of Legend and the remake of Iron Monkey. The Matrix is a very good film, and certainly its utilisation of special effects and phenomenal fictional vision will be praised in later decades, but one doubts whether it will reach the iconic status of masterpiece.

Man, I am going to have to watch Blade Runner again, I haven't watched it in a while. Even though it has been released that Deckard is a replicant, I can still see how it can go the other way, and he is not. Personally, I don't think Ridley Scott should have said anything, and left it up to the viewer.

I always thought the origami was left because of Rachael, not Deckard. Like I said, maybe I missed something, and I will have to watch it again.

Yea, also, just because you didn't like a movie, it doesn't mean it is bad. There are many movies that are considered classics that I don't particularly like, but I can't stop it from being considered that.

nukeu666 10-25-2004 09:29 AM

try watching GITS or metropolis for a dark/androidical future type of movies
bladerunner didnt have that fulfilling feeling i hoped it would have
