Who are your favorite comedians?

I can't get enough of these guys:

Ryan Stiles
Colin Mochrie

They're both from one of my favorite shows on tv, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" I like them because 1) they're just plain hilarious and 2) they both have such incredible talent on stage... I almost had a chance to go see Colin live, but I was leaving early in the morning for Atlanta at the end of May. Hopefully another time I can see him in person :)

I need to find some good comedy clubs in Tampa and go see some improv

amonkie 08-09-2004 10:28 AM

I'm right with you Sue! Colin was in town about a month ago, but I was in Colorado, so missed out on his show.

To add,

Bobby Slayton - he did a show at the Improv here in town, and I have never laughed so hard!

Bill Hicks- the most underrated comedian ever. He died a while back, but listen to the stuff he did on the first war in the gulf and it's amazing how relevant it is today.

Mitch Hedberg- Just good stoner comedy. Nothing groundbreaking, but still really funny.

DHS 08-09-2004 06:13 PM

The guys from the blue collar comedy tour...

Chris Rock is head and shoulders above everyone.... then Jamie Foxx, and finally Dave Chapelle. I think these guys are the funniest around. I like the edginess of their humor. Funny funny stuff.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE Hicks was the best comedian since Lenny Bruce, my other favorite.

skinnymofo 08-10-2004 10:27 AM

Dave Atell
Jim Gaffigan
Dave Chapelle - this is for his standup not show
There was a guy on comedy central presents, he was kind of a new age hippyish kinda looking guy long hair, talks like a old druggy, i never caught his name but his stand up was hilarious.
Jay Mohr is a genius

unoaman 08-11-2004 01:45 PM

George Carlin will always have to be my favorite, guess I kinda grew up with George.

However... Steven Wright, Ryan Styles, Colin Mochrie, Ron White, Paula Poundstone, Lily Tomlin; all deserve notice.

Halx 08-11-2004 02:15 PM

Jon Stewart is the best. Quite possibly the funniest man alive right now.

Bill Maher is slowly becoming a favorite of mine. At first I just didn't jive with him, but he's so much funnier than any other bigtime political comedian. For instance, Dennis Miller is dumbfoundingly unfunny compared. Bill's show on HBO is astoundingly funny.

Mitch Hedberg, The Amazing Johnathan and Lewis Black are my other favorites.

jdubz 08-11-2004 02:54 PM

Dave Chappelle
Ron White (tater salad)
Tim Wilson

Chris Rock
Conan O'Brian
Dave Chappelle
Dave Attell
George Carlin
Jon Stewart

That guy from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with the nickname Tater Salad is also pretty funny.

Chris Rock's the man!

balefire88 08-12-2004 11:51 AM

In the area of stand-up

#1. Chris Rock - check out his latest one, put out in may or something on HBO, he hits on so many issues, and yet keeps u laughing through out.

#2. Seinfeld - This is probably a wierd choice for most people. I loved his show, still watch some reruns from time to time. He's done stand up, there's one that's an hour and a half long. its very funny, definitely check it out before you dismiss him.

#3. Robin williams - His standup is very very funny, most people mite think it might be too annoying cause of his movies and stuff (watch 1 hour photo for his break-out role). He rattles off liek 10 jokes every 30 seconds, and u'll have trouble keeping up. Good stuff, though if we stop him, we might save the world's water problems, watch it and u'll understand what i mean.

I've not really watched much other stand up, but i think, i've watched over 15 hours of stand up total. Eddie murphy is pretty funny, i watch Last Comic standing, those guys are pretty good. Going to watch Dave Chapelle this weekend.

For best set of comedians, whose line is it anyway is pretty good. It's best when its Greg, Wayne, Ryan, Colin, and Drew are on. The old british ones are quite good as well, though if u're not british, which i am not, u miss some of the jokes.

Talk show hosts, the best are Jon Stewart, Conan, and then Letterman i suppose. Jimmy Stewart is pretty funny too

Jon Stewart is by far the funniest man alive.

Behind him the cast of The Daily Show which is lead by the funny Lewis Black.

Dennis Leary and Jerry Seinfeld make me laugh.

Conan O'Brian is BEYOND funny in comparison to any other late night shows.

I don't know his name but... The comic on MAD TV who does the John Madden impression. I've had to go to the bathroom while watching him.

That's Frank Caliendo. Yeah, he's pretty funny. I watched his stand up act on comedy central presents. As you can imagine it was almost entirely impressions. But it was good because his impressions are pretty funny.

Anyway though, I don't really know who my favorites would be. But I can say that the guys on the Blue Collar Comedy tour were pretty damn funny. And I'll admit I didn't expect them to be. Another comedian I really liked after seeing is Jay Mohr and I didn't expect him to be too good either.

Also I've got to say, I really don't understand this craze with Jon Stewart. He's alright but he's not that great. I don't really like him on his own show but I do like some of the other people on his show. He bores me for some reason, not to mentions he sucks at interviewing people. I've got to admit though, I haven't seen him in stand up. I'm pretty much judging him based on how he does on his show.

The Blue Collar Comedy tour group, Dave Chappelle and Greg Giraldo

No one beats Chris Rock. He's a living legend, literally. His timing is perfection, his facial expressions are a great supplement, but none of that compares to the wit of his material. He's done 3 sets, and his first two while a looong time ago, are still awesome by today's standards. You can quote this guy forever. Comedy Central did a Top 100 comedians of all time, Chris Rock was one of the only ones (if not the only one, I didn't see all 100) that's still active and alive, beating some of the all time greats.

Dave Chapelle's awesome too. Although his standup has really benefitted from the success of his show.

I personally love Wanda Sykes looking toward female comedians.

Paul Rodriguez also gets a thumbs up. He does for latinos what Chris Rock does for African Americans, oh and George Lopez (although I haven't seen his whole act).

I really enjoy Dane Cook's enthusiasm, makes him so much more animated than any other performer.

Dave Attell's up there. He came to my school once, totally bummed when I missed that one.

sapiens 08-20-2004 10:40 AM

Of comedians that are currently performing, David Cross is probably my favorite comic of the moment. He was on Mr. Show and is on Arrested Development. His humor can be a bit disturbing. Dave Chappelle is great too.

While I think Chris Rock is a great comedian. I'd just like to point out that there were a lot of comedians who were in the top 100 that are still alive and active today. A lot. Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Dennis Miller, Jay Leno, just to name a few.

But then again. I don't know about that show. After all they did mention Jerry Seinfeld as number 12 so ... yeah ...

Stompy 08-20-2004 11:24 AM

Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Jerry Seinfeld
Kevin James
Dane Cook
Dave Chapelle
Chris Rock
Conan (is he even stand up?)
David Cross

...hm, that's about it. Basically anyone with a twisted sense of humor and dark comedy.

whocarz 08-21-2004 01:07 AM

[QUOTE=Stompy] Conan (is he even stand up?)

Well, it's favorite comedians, not favorite stand up comedians. He never did standup (it seems). Before his show, he was a comedy writer.

Sorry, I meant active as in stand-up. Eddie Murphy stopped a looong time ago, Jay Leno, Ellen, Dennis Miller as well. Robin Williams' last one was Live on Broadway which was 2002 I believe, so I'd consider that active.

tropple 08-23-2004 03:21 AM

1. Red Skelton

nik 08-23-2004 03:47 AM

the one and only: Seinfeld

Unright 08-23-2004 07:15 AM

There's a lot.. (in no paticular order)

George Carlin
Steven Wright
Dana Carvey
Bill Hicks
The Amazing Jonathan
Sam Kinison
Dennis Leary
Steve Martin
David Cross
Jon Stewart (and pretty much all his correspondants on the Daily Show)
Lewis Black
Robin Williams (stand-up)
Eddie Izzard
Jerry Seinfeld
Kevin James
Dave Chappelle
Richard Pryor

probably more I'm forgetting...

Grancey 08-23-2004 08:35 PM

Jerry Lewis.......from when profanity was not necessary to make people laugh.

warrrreagl 08-24-2004 04:53 AM

Sid Ceaser

George Carlin
Jonathan Winters

redarrow 08-24-2004 02:05 PM

George Carlin
Dave Chapelle
Penn and Teller

and Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld is probably the most talented comedian out there, because he doesnt use swear words in his acts. He also doesnt mention sex that much.
Many poor comedians get by easily by using swear words and profanity.

ShaniFaye 08-24-2004 02:17 PM

For all of you that listed Eddie Izzard, its great to know that there is such good taste one this board....I SO wanted to see him when he did his US tour last year, but alas, he came no where near Atlanta, DC was the closest if I remember right....has anyone here seen him in person? (if Im not mistaken this is the 2nd thread on this topic and a lot more people listed him in the last one)
