Movie Sequels
How do you feel about series movies.. around 2-3?
Do they add up to what you expected.. or was you let down to the point they should have left certian movies stay just one movie. begin |
My general opinion is the sequels suck...
There are exceptions, and when a sequel is good, it is usually "very good." But overall when I think of a sequel I think of a cheesy movie that is more about making money than it is about content and quality. |
Empire Strikes Back= Good
Attack of the Clones= Good Terminator 2: Judgement Day= Good Matrix Reloaded= ? X2: X-Men United= ? Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines= ? Predator 2= Bad Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers= Bad (in comparison to FOTR, don't flame) The Crow: City of Angels= Bad |
my favorite sequels that never seem to let me down have got to be the comedies.
ie. police academy the pie movies naked gun airplane national lampooons |
I used to say that all sequels were bad but now that the internet is around movie studios are putting more work into sequels because everyone already knows if sucks before watching it.
Not all new sequels are good though. Sequels do have a harder life because the bar set for them is raised higher that an original movie. If it doesn't meet the bar it automatically sucks in the mind of most fans of the first movie, even if it was an excelent stand-alone movie. I don't really look at Lord of the Rings as sequels. Its kind of like Back to the Future(2 & 3) and Martix(2 & 3) in that It was all shot simultanously there was no time for the actors to age, or not come back for the sequel. It was 1 story that needed to be broken up into parts so that you wouldn't have to set in the theater for 9 hours. |
yeah .. LOTR will always be the exception for me.. as you said, cybermike, its one big movie.. like buying a book and having to wait each summer for the next book to come out..
but at least they got it done.. this way if the actor dies the movie is done... just wish they would go back and do the hobbit... |
Evil Dead I, cool film,
Evil Dead II, boooring, Evil Dead III, best in the series. Hey, is that a Haiku? |
Depends really some sequels are good if not better but most suck. Only made off the success of the first one, to make a quick buck.
|
I still haven't forgiven Dan Ackroyd for Caddyshack II
|
Stars Wars, Indian Jones, The Man With No Name trilogy and several (not many) others break the bad sequel rule. But in general, if it has numbers at the end of the title it will suck. As long as there is never an 'End of the World Part II' I'll tolerate sequels.

The mother of all sequels : Godfather Part II.

Amen to that |
What about the Pupper Master Series. They just get better and better! LOL

Most times the sequels are never as good as the first, not they are bad. Back to the Future for example. The first one is the best in my opinion, and the other two are pretty good.
Othertimes though, some movies should have never gona as far as they did. Robocop: Excellent movie, one of the greatest of all time Robocop 2: Good but not as good as the first Robocop 3: I wanted to claw my eyes out. A robot ninja and Robocop flying. Ughh The same thing with Tremors. The first one was great, second was kind of crappy and the third was just rediculous. |
They should make the sequels first then make the original and perhaps a followup with a prequel

The second Ace Ventura movie was good, though I can never figure out if it surpassed the original or not. And others can never figure out why I liked either one. Empire was good, of course. Though I'm one of those wierd people who liked Jedi best of all. Spiderman 2 was probably an improvement over the first. I'm tempted to base that opinion wholly on its lack of any contrived Macy Gray advertisement. And, although I freely admit that this is an irrational opinion, my favorite Scary Movie was the third one. Leslie Nielsen, folks. Come on. (though the fourth one looks terrible.) |

The thing about a sequel is that in order to be justified the first movie had to be pretty decent (please don't post exceptions to that statement it is a generalization), so a sequel has to measure up and often, although it may be a good film, it will not be up to the standard of the original. Also a lot of sequels are cynical money making devices using the popularity of the original to make a few dollars |
Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd actually surprised me as being watchable and downright funny at times. It wasn't nearly as funny as the first one (then again, how many movies are), but for a sequel that didn't have any of the original folks involved, it was top notch. If you view it out of the shadow of the original, I think that it holds up pretty well.

I hate it when a sequel is made to a movie that has a very distinct "ending" like Highlander. Why oh why did they have to make sequels of that one? They actually ruined the epic fairytale magic of the first one.
When a movie is more about the characters than the actual story, like it often is with comedies, or when it's mostly about the big mofo explosions and cool oneliners like in action flicks, then go ahead. It's usually good. |
Let's look at the Rocky movies (my opinions):
Rocky: Excellent - excellent from start to finish. Rocky II: Good - slow beginning, but picked up as it went along. Rocky III: Very good - Exciting for the most part, but some dumb parts as well. Rocky IV: Very good - Great story, but some bad acting. Rocky V: This movie never should have happened! Rocky Balboa: OK. Better than Rocky V, but not on the same level as the first 4. Great fight scenes, though. Also, Back to the Future trilogy: BTTF I: Great - concept and acting was perfect. BTTF II: bad - bad plot, jumped around way too much BTTF III: Good - decent story, but just a bit too silly. |

As far as sequels in general go. There are horrible ones, there are great ones. Sometimes a sequel pans out to be better than the original. Generally I shudder at the first mention of a sequel if the first movie was a great one. The Matrix, should have been left alone. |
