I saw a premiere or something of The Day After Tomorrow, tonight

And yes, like all other disaster movies it was a bit of a disaster. I dislike the idea of films getting a lot of acclaim, purely for the special effects. Although, i admit that the couple of minutes of some of the disaster sequences are spectacular and seemingly real, but for the other hour and a bit it's just the common predictable tripe - not that i was expecting any more or less.

Also some aspects of the phenonema which caused the disaster are contradicted later on with a few inconsistentcies (but i am probably being over-observant/pedantic, especially for this movie ).

Also, there was some other rather shallow political points made, especially at the end of the movie, which adds a bit of a laugh i guess.

In reterospect, i wouldn't have paid for the movie anyway (i went with a friend who won a ticket) although the price of the ticket may be worth it, just to see some of the disasters, which are quite eery yet beautiful (It's Mother Nature vs Man, or something ). Just make sure you have quite a low expectation for the rest of the movie and story and you might just enjoy it

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm wondering how they are going to solve it using a nuke.

Giant asteriod hitting the earth? Blow it up with nukes.

Earth's core stopped spinning? Tunnel down there and detonate some nukes.

Aliens invading? Steal a ship, send them a virus, and, you guessed it, give 'em a nuke.

Remember that movie 10.5 a few weeks ago. This seems like the same type of thing, but with better special effects. Remember in 10.5 they tried to nuke the earthquake faults to weld them together, LOL.

Despite my scientific conscience telling me otherwise, for some reason I watched some of 10.5, and will probably eventually see The Day after Tomorrow. Go figure.

I really want to see that movie. Funny how Moon and I were just watching a documentary about the magnetic fields and how they are gradually destabilizing and eventually the earth will be totally switched, throwing everything off. Just like how the ice ages were.

My major in college was multimedia with an emphasis in DVP and special effects so there's alot of times I'll see a movie just for its effects knowing it will probably be weak in story. Mainly just to have the opportunity to see the work on the big screen.

Its kind of strange even though I cant say movies like Deep Impact, Volcano, etc rank in my top movie list; I'm intriqued by disaster special effects; especially tidal waves.

In any case I enjoyed watching this movie, but I couldnt sit through the entire thing again. I could definately watch the action scenes again.

*There are wolves that were generated by some of the best CGI I've seen.

I was quite impressed with it, considering that I went in thinking it'd be just as big a no-brainer as ID4 was. The action scenes were great and awe-inspiring and the characters seemed well fleshed out, Dennis Quaid's performance could've been a bit better but Gllyenhaal's was great, plus Emma Rossum is adorable.

The film's message did make me think so really, it did it's job and did it well.

I completely concur!!! The script really wasn't that good. There were some cool moments SFX wise and a moment during the wolves that made me jump but other then that the movie didn't really grab me. I gotta tell you...I loved Independance Day but this movie just didn't do it for me as much. I would rate it a 5 of our 10.

I agree with you on this. It was like the writer just put it in for a tension moment. There was no reason for them to be on that freighter and even LESS of a reason for them to just so happen to find the people on it in the middle of a storm.

The Wolves broke free then sniffed out survivors like Sam Hall for a feed. Sure they didn't need to be in the film at all but the Wolves finding Sam and his two buds was justified... I can't believe I'm sticking up for a b-grade movie.

LOL!!! Well....why didn't the wolves after they escaped go after the trainers that were right there? I mean...that would've been......ah forget it. The wolves were kinda cool CGI anyway. hehehehe

I saw this movie on opening night, jampacked in there, too. Anyway, I saw this movie as one of those 'one time watch' type of movies. The special effects were very well done, but some of the acting could have been better. And the whole wolf scene was kinda bad, but it was decent. Solid 'B' movie at the most.

Total B movie. I had a special screening pass to see it that a friend of mine had gotten. I didn't think it was a total problem with the acting, I think a large part of the problem was that it just wasn't a good script. Also, I really wished that I hadn't watched one of the little 5 minute trailers that they sometimes do on HBO because the lead actor talked about how they filmed the whole beginning on a sound stage. So even from the beginning, I wasn't immersed in the film so I'm sitting there going....."Sound Stage...not real ice".

Utter tripe. You couldn't go more than five minutes without experiencing (crappy) CGI. The wolves really did it for me; it was pure Hollywood.

My friend summed it up better than I ever could: "Shit happens, FUCK IT'S COLD!"

Roger Ebert gave it 3 stars, and said that it's one of the best in its category. Most disaster movies suck, so I think I'll check this one out. Jake Gyllenhaal is awesome too. Ebert mentioned that it had incredibly good special effects as well...if Ebert mentions the effects being good, they must be spectacular.

I didn't think the CGI was crappy. I thought it was pretty good for what it was. The only thing that I thought was kinda lame was the script. I think the SFX was the only thing good about the movie.

Hated it to be honest, would of walked out if i was on my own, did get a few chuckles from the plot holes and stupidness of the whole thing. You couldnt pay me to watch it again.

Didn't think it was THAT bad....but definitely not worth the $10 I spent on it. Would've prefered to have rented it on Netflix. I wonder if they'll make back all the money they spent on it.

Saw it last night, and my friends and I, and the whole rest of the theater, were laughing the whole way through the movie.
I've seen movies with worse dialogue, but having that writing juxtaposed with the intense disaster scenes was rediculous.

From the initial previews 6 months ago, I was expecting more of a story on society as a whole *after* the storm. I think this would of been a much more intruiging (and realistic) film .. instead, it's just another cookie cutter film with decent CGI (that is only half as good as model based effects in other movies like LotR)

I thought it was good for what it was. The idea of the ice age hitting us in the time was a great thought. The only thing is the direness of it all fell away. I mean ever thing was freezing in mear seconds of the storms and then it all thaws out in like a day? what the hell? thats not scary!!
The special effects were awsome though. NO idea how the wolves even got on the frieghter in the first place but yes they were very cool

Gyllenhaal was impressive, I thought.

And while the wolves weren't necessary, the movie needed <i>something</i> to keep it interesting.

Totally brainless. But what was cool is the fact that the stuff that's going on recently with all of the tornadoes these past few months....really make me think about the movie. LOL!

The movie would have been much better had they used more CGI. The "wolves" looked more like wolf-bear-cougar mutants. It makes the movie extra suspenseful when video-game graphics are chasing human actors. At least with real volves/dogs there's a chance one of the wolves will rip out the shitty actors jugulars like that tiger did Roy. What a bucket of suck.
