The Lord of the Rings- Animated

I watched the animated movie last night on Cartoon Network, and I was thoroughly impressed.

Though they did leave out Arwen, her absence isn't too terrible, either.

I could definitley see where Jackson got some of his scenery ideas; it looked like some of the scenes were drawn from the recent movies, though I know that isn't true since the animated movie is much older. It makes me wonder if the animators were that good in interpreting what they looked like from the books, or if Jackson was that good in taking an animated scene and reproducing it in real life.

Anyhow, anyone else have any opinions or thoughts?

I tried watching this on the C.N. but it I just couldn't get into the animation. The characters were constantly moving even while standing still ... meh.... I dunno.

I LOVED the animated version of The Hobbit as a child, and that is probably why I like Tolkien so much now. I saw part of the LOTR animated movie once, but never got to see all of it. Do you know if they'll be playing it again? I'd love to see it.

Cartoon Network will be playing Return of the King next Sunday night, 5/30, at seven, six central, I believe. Quote me on the date, but not on the time.

It depends. The Ralph Bakshi version.... it wasn't too bad. I personally didn't like it, but i can see how others would.

The Bass Rankin version however.... i would like to see the creators burn in hell for all eternity. There is no excuse for watching that movie.

Hmm, I wonder which one I watched.

RedCometChar 05-24-2004 11:13 AM

That was the Ralph Bakshi one on last night. I don't like it at all, personally- way too much reliance on rotoscoping and sloppy animation shortcuts. For example, the hordes of orcs that were clearly the silhouettes of real guys with horns and teeth painted on. And that Balrog!

I like the Rankin-Bass Hobbit okay, even if some of the character designs are weird, but it's been over 20 years since I saw their Return of the King. Have to give that a look next week.

I only watched part of it before I switched it over to The Simpsons.
The scene that confused the hell out of me was when the Ring Wraiths caught up to Frodo, right before he crosses the river on Legolas' horse.
It seems the scene was nothing but one long staring contest between the Wraith and Frodo.
I don't know how long it lasted but it went on too long.
I kept expecting them to start running towards each other and start kissing.
It was just goofy, imo.

The singing was why I loved that movie so much! It had a VERY Tolkienish feeling to it just because of the singing -- something I wish Peter Jackson had utilized more of in his LOTR adaptations.

I liked the Bakshi version too... I just wish they hadn't run out of money so they could have finished the damn thing... The rotoscoped orcs and Riders of Rohan were the shit in their day... I still like them.

By the way, Arwen wasn't in the books all that much either.

The Rankin Bass ROTK is just abominable.

Rubyee 05-25-2004 09:40 AM

I thought she was in the books enough to make a difference in her absence. She may not have been a huge character, but she was there, and served a purpose.

It was decent for my 4 yr old son to watch- and it is good, but an ancient animation. Moon pointed out that the large scenes of people (the fight) was all real people, but colorized to look animated. Really interesting.
And the voice of Frodo sounded so much like Elijah Wood's voice in the movies!

In the books I believe she makes a total of two appearances...

1) at a dinner in Rivendell, I believe in Frodo's honour, before the fellowship leaves. She is refered to as being in attendance but has no dialogue.

2) She arrives with the elvish entourage at the end of ROTK for the wedding.

She is referred to a couple of other time... like when the Dunedain (after the battle of Helm's Deep) bring Strider the banner she sewed for him...

The whole romance of Arwen and Aragorn takes place in the Appendix at the end of ROTK.

Not much more than that...

My feelings exactly.

I watched a few minutes of that version on Cartoon Network and I thought it was horrible. As someone already said, the orcs were clearly filmed actors with a few things traced onto them. That's serious cheating in my book. The voice acting was atrocius as well.

Charlatan 05-27-2004 07:02 AM

It's not cheating... it's just a different animation style. Some like it and some don't.

I thought it was very cool...
