Colonial House
Is anyone else watching this? I loved frontier house and really enjoy PBS's attempts at educational reality tv.
i'm finding myself a bit torn on the whole sabbath laws issue from last nights episode. i'm an atheist and and i would not usually advocate forced church, but in this case it seems essential to the experiment. if you're going to recreate colonial life as authentically as possible it has to include church. obviously we cannot recreate how people felt about religion but for the sake of the experiment i think all participants should at least go through the motions. that said i think the governer's dream world where all the colonists love god in the exact same way that he does is a bunch of crap (go ahead, pin me with a P). |

I actually just caught some of this last evening. I really like this concept derivation on the whole reality TV craze. I find history very interesting and really enjoy seeing a general outline of what it was like to live in the colonial days. I know it is still fairly far off but still intriguing nonetheless.

It was alright. I still hate watching it because it's so cheesy. They act like they're scared of the Native Americans even though it's a fucking TV show. I know they're trying to make it realistic, but realism doesn't require fake emotions! Don't act scared if you're not, it just ruins the concept.

I think you have a point there.
To actually fully recreate the colonial scene, church will definitely be an important part. At the time, of course, people had an option to go or not. I'm not exactly sure what would happen if someone didn't go, but I'm sure the makers of the show could come up with some type of punishment. Anyway, yeah, I think you're right that for them to participate fully in this they have to be involved in the religious aspect of the colonial lifestyle.

PredeconInferno: actually you did have to go to church by law in the colonies. they left enforcement and punishment up to the governer of each colony but blasphemy was often punishable by death.

I love this show, I have also enjoyed the other educational reality shows PBS has put out, finally TV that isn't saturated with backstabbing and bimbos. I also really enjoyed shit I can't remember the name right now, but it was filmed in Manitoba and they lived like homesteaders, also Quest for the Bay, and Quest for the Klondike, Quest for the Sea, all shown on History Canada.

I think it is awful that even PBS is falling into the "reality TV trap." Ugh.

I really liked this show. I think the people on this one, were so much happier than the ones on Manor House. It's really cool to see how working for yourself, made a lot of those people feel good. Makes me want to give it a try.
Also, I think it's pretty awesome that there are people on the TFP that like PBS. I think we should start a club! Lasereth- I know what you mean about cheesy. The second Indian tribe that approaced them was really silly. I mean, they sent a woman out with a pot of peas, and when the native americans came into town, everyone acted so p.c. I mean that's hardly a recreation of how we treated the natives.
