yea I know but he is referencing it from some other movie that we all know it from said with a Russian Accent. I believe I noted in a previous post its not Something Abouts Mary. Sorry but I do appreciate that attempt. This quote is still a mystery to me after 5 years of searching.

I saw another reference to this quote being from the movie Zorba the Greek, which is a lot older than you are thinking - but about the right time frame for the movie I'm thinking of.. 90s is too new for the quote, in my memory... I've said it a lot longer than that...

This quote like any good idea is going to be hard to find a source simply because it's over used, i've heard it in more than one place, and with the simplistic, unoriginal plot/writing of Rocky IV, i doubt that it originated there, however, where it came from originally is beyond me, i'm sure some movie fanatic knows off the top of his head, maybe i'll poke around a bit

Anyone REALLY google this? I found a link to this message board (in about 2 seconds of searching) which some guys states: The earliest reference to "strong, like bull" I was able to find was in a 1950's sitcom called "Make Room For Daddy"(1), featuring the actor Hans Conried(2) as Uncle Tonoose. Conried would later appear on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show as the voice of Snidley Whiplash. (This is important because the most common origin listed of strong like bull is from the character Boris, and Conried is the most likely reason for it's appearance in the cartoon.) Tonoose was known for saying "strong like bull, smart like streetcar" as a catchphrase. His first appearance on the show was in 1956. 1. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045410/ 2. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0175788/

Man I really wish a definitive answer to this question would surface. I've checked this thread no telling how many times hoping that someone has finally figured it out.
I know there have been valid answers, but I'm with Lord H. It's something else. Something that I've definitely seen, and no one has struck on it yet. Please people, I'm becoming just as tortured as Humungus himself.

I just think that is is something we have heard a number of times, and just ingrained it into our minds. Probably just hearing it on the street, or in the number of movies etc that it has been said or something similar

I'm so sorry I read this thread. It's going to drive me insane.
I'm seeing a Russian grandmother with a scarf on her head ( a la Fiddler on the Roof) holding out a cup of some kind of steaming liquid. The scarf was red. "Here, drringk this. Make you strrongk... like bool." She had a pretty big nose and dark hair. And it's old. My dad used to say it. Maybe 1970s. But something I actually saw. Movie, not TV. Arrrrrrrgh!

The phrase has outgrown and forgotten it's origin. It's probably already been answered with the Rocky and Bulwinkle/Make room for Daddy posts. The thing that's throwing everyone off is that they didn't hear it from either of those. It's been referenced so many times on and off television your mind is tricked into believing you've actually seen where it came from. I don't know if this is true or not, but it helps me sleep at night.

I just read this thread today, and "From Russia, with Love" kept coming to mind. I did a check and there is a scene that may have the quote, but I can't confirm it. The early Bond films were very popular so that might explain why the phrase is familiar to the older generation.

I may have found the answer. I was watching Quantum Leap on the SciFi Channel this morning. More specifically it was the series finale 'Mirror Image'. In it the character Stawpah I believe says "Made him strong like bull" in a heavy russian accent.
Unfortunately I was watching in the bedroom and the DVR is in the living room so I could go back and check for sure if that is what he said. I've been trying all day to find a copy of that episode but no luck . All I can find are the complete season so I leave it to someone else to confirm. hi folks. i had to take a hiatus off this post because more questions just made me more crazy. I still have no answer to this question. If you search google for the quote, thats my messages that post. That google response was because I took a chance with that google answer thing. I put $20 down on an answer and that guy came up with the danny thomas show. I wasn't asking for the origin, although, that was pretty cool and very well could be the origin of it. There is some movie, I'm thinking in the 80's that we all know this quote from. Atleast for me I think. Who knows anymore. Maybe aliens implanted this among the alien race to screw with us. It's probably some movie like "Gotcha" though it was on recently and I didn't hear it although I didn't watch all of it. I've tried cross-referencing movies to There's Something About Mary because Ben Stiller sort of says it but hes referencing what I think we all know it from. Torcher I tell you. Torcher! Thanks for keeping it alive. I can always count on the TFP to help me on my quest.

My father always said this, and I hav even said it sometimes when referring to some people:P
The earliest reference to "strong, like bull" I was able to find was in a 1950's sitcom called "Make Room For Daddy"(1), featuring the actor Hans Conried(2) as Uncle Tonoose. Lol this is an interesting quote.. and I have to admit I was searching for a quote for a trivia deal I got going in my 360 blog, saw your post and had to sign up. Too funny. I think I am gonna ask my dad where he thinks it comes from.. you've caused a frenzy..lol Tonoose was known for saying "strong like bull, smart like streetcar" as a catchphrase. His first appearance on the show was in 1956. |

After a quick search on Answers.com, I came up with this: http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question55965.html
Check out the responder; hilarious. I empathize with you Lord Humungus, but I too, have heard the quote, yet I too, do not have a definitive answer as to where I have heard it. My first instinct tells me that it most likely came from a comedic genre of film or show, but other than that, I have not much more to offer.

Well this thread is quite something. I also remember this quote, so it can't be too old (which rules out Make Room for Daddy altogether, as I'm 100% sure I've not seen any of that). I was born in 1983, and I remember it from between 1984 and 1989, I'm almost 100% sure. It was around the time I used to watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks. A masculine Russian or Eastern European woman hands someone, presumably the protagonist, a glass of something green and says, something like Drink "It make you strong....like bull!"

Well.. I'm glad to see that the brians are still working on this one because I still have no answer. In fact, i think you may see my posts all over the place if you google "strong like bull" it has been so long. I agree that it has to be somewhere around mid-80's. I am 100% on the same page with you with respect to the quote. I have the same feeling that some russian lady says "drink, it make you strong...like bull". That is the exact same thing I have in my head. Man..this sucks. How can so many people know this quote but not know where its from. Crazy. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will see it when some old rerund is on and end our misery.

"i was always wondering why they push aphrodisiacs with a nation of billions. more ginsing root or rhino horn? it make you strong like bull! " ...does that help jog the memory at all, as to what kind of movie?

Can you tell me the scene and who says it? Is it said with a Russian accent? Can you provide any more details before I run out and rent this?
Thanks! Quote:
