I've also noticed over time that MTV2 is starting to drift away from their early "all videos" mission statement. On the Headbangers Ball kick... I love metal and Hatebreed, but Jamey Jasta is not cut out to be an interviewer. Every time I watch him, I get thoughts of the SNL sketch "The Chris Farley Show." I see him interviewing Cannibal Corpse and think..."you... you remember when you did that album 'Live Cannibalism?'.....that... that was awesome."

It's called an investment, they're going to make money by spending that money. Homeless people and bitching college students won't make them more money.

That said, the shows hip-hop speak annoys the shit out of me.

you can... call up your cable company have the channels activated. watch them for a couple days, set your VCR to record full VHS tap and then have it changed.

You'll only pay a prorated price for the extra channels. I used to do it all the time just so that I could watch certain shows.

Now you're going to say, but it costs extra to change the cable box. Some companies like Time Warner have self install at no extra charge, and others have promotions where installation is free. Wait until the promotion and then take advantage of it.

Once you have the box you can turn it on and off at will by calling your cable operator.

anyways i think the show is entertaining...amazing how they can transform a shitty vehicle into something NICE! not to mention that its pretty nice of MTV to fix up these kid's rides....but im sure the show wont last for TOO long...i believe they spend around $20,000 on each car..

Well, we've drifted off the original subject, but I did see a couple of episode of PMR for the first time Saturday, and both people whose cars got worked over didn't seem to have a lot of cash.

One girl had a 67 Mustang in really crappy shape (except for the engine) which had been handed down through her family three times. She'd actually put all her extra cash into the engine, but she didn't have any to spend on the rest of the car, which looked like a rolling garbage dump inside and out. And she didn't seem to come from an especially rich home, so I thought she was deserving enough.

The other guy was an art student with a 10-15-year-old Mitsu Mirage, and he had so little money going that he was driving with a window broken out and the emergency spare on one wheel. Again, I didn't have any problem with this.

Yeah, I know, the 20K could be better spent -- children are starving in India, you bet -- but as Cynthetique says, the money's really being spent to hook viewers and thus make _more_ money, and that it does do, admirably. If you think the show is sending the wrong message -- a slick new ride will change your life -- I won't necessarily argue with you. But people who feel that way watch TV, too, and they probably like Pimp My Ride. Plus it looks like it's produced in LA, where a slick ride probably _will_ change your life, but that says more about LA than about your life.

just got this off the newswire:
Quote:
HEADLINE: Turning Puntos into pimpmobiles

BYLINE: Jim Carroll

BODY:

Dear Mister Xzibit. I'm the proud co-owner of a '97 Toyota Corolla which could do with a face-lift. The colour is Glasgow Rangers blue, the seat pattern is pretty wack, the stereo has never known better days, one of the window panels is Perspex, the windscreen wipers suck and there's a whole load of stuff in the boot (sorry, trunk) which needs to be sorted out. Er, could you please pimp my ride?

In the TV makeover world where bean-counters are transformed into Mediterranean guesthouse hosts and livingrooms in suburban semi-ds are va-va-voomed into art-deco monstrosities, there is nothing else like Pimp My Ride. The unlikeliest hit TV show on the box comes from the same MTV development stable which has given us the good (Cribs) and the bad (The Osbournes) of music-related reality TV.

What happens on the show is that run-of-the-mill, clapped-out and ugly bangers are turned into flash automobiles which cause mass rubbernecking on the streets and the gardai to stop you for a gawk on the Cashel bypass.

Fronted by rapper Xzibit (an unlikely but fantastic TV host), Pimp My Ride follows the car's transformation from ugly duckling via the work of a bunch of Californian car-customisers into a motor most of us would regard as being on the ostentatious side of gaudy.

The bangers which Xzibit and his team select to refresh make some of the shoddy cars on Irish roads look like factory-fresh models by comparison. One kid called Kerry moved from Fargo, North Dakota to California in an '89 Ford Escort. Nothing wrong with that, except that his ride was actually two different '89 Escorts welded and glued together. A yoga teacher called Gaby was tootling around LA in a $200 Land Cruiser with no doors. Ezra's station-wagon was so confused that it sported two different logos, Nissan and Datsun.

All grist to Xzibit's mill. After sizing up the car, shaking his head a lot and cracking a couple of cheesy one-liners, Xzibit drives off in the lame car to West Coast Customs. There, a crack team come up with ridiculous ideas, get to work and transform your motor.

Every part of the car gets a makeover. How about adding DVD players, computers and flash heart-shaped brake lights? No problem! Big-ass wheels, a slick paint job and an interior which hurts your eyes? Take it away! The owner's name is Nile? Hey, how about a stream of water running down the middle of the back-seat of her car? You think I'm kidding? The cars which roll out of the West Coast Customs' yard bear little resemblance to the ones which staggered in. This is what you get when $25,000 worth of modifications are made to a car which you'd do well to sell for scrap. At Pimp My Ride, minimalism is a bad word.

Of course, anyone who's ever seen Cribs will be familiar with the rides which Xzibit and friends see as essential. No half-bit rapper or bass-playing nu-metal eejit is complete without a few tricked-out cars and vans parked in the garage. Pimp My Ride flips the script by customising cars whose owners could never afford to even daydream about such extravagant enhancements. No wonder the owners are so gleeful when they see their rejigged ride for the first time.

Best of all, it puts hot cars in the hands of people who will drive them every day of the week, spill tomato ketchup all over the new suede seats and get involved in a few altercations with clampers. Let's hope there's a follow-up show to find out how the owners fared with their new rides.

Whatever about driving those cars around Los Angeles, it goes without saying that some of those monsters wouldn't survive an hour's parking on quite a few streets around Dublin.

For those claiming that they don't do anything engine or transmission wise to the cars thats simply not true. One kid who was a computer engineer had an old honda I believe who's engine was so bad it didn't even make it all the way to West Coast Customs and actually shut down in the middle of the street about 40 yards away from the shop and Xzibit had to run over and the guys were like "Where the hell is the car?" and he's like "You have to help me get it! It broke down just down the street!" So they removed his engine and disected it to see just what was wrong and the thing was leaking oil like crazy all the plugs were shot or clogged, etc. They cleaned the whole thing out so it would work like new then got around to pimping his ride. I dunno if this was a special case because the engine was actually SO bad that they couldn't possible send it back without doing ANYTHING to it at all or if it's something they regularly look at but don't show but that guys care was probably one of the worst. The kid also had to have a kidney removed so he had upwards of 20 water & coke bottles scattered everywhere with small or large ammounts of water in them because he needed to keep hydrated or he could die I guess so they installed a water pouch with 2 liters of water to the back of his seat with a straw leading all the way to the head rest so dude could drink his water. I've seen em do a lot of good on that show. Certainly more than I've seen other shows do. Too bad they're in Cali and not San Antonio Texas haha. I wish they'd take that show on the road. If you wanna talk about shows that are not only stupid but a waste of money lets talk about "Your Face Or Mine" where they just have to decide who's better looking between 2 celebrities or 2 people. I mean all they have to do is get the first question right and they get a fuckin i-pod mini. I remember one time they had to pick who was hotter between Missy Elliot and Christina Aguilera or some shit like that...I don't remember who the other one was but it was someone who was obviously hotter than Missy Elliot just about ANYONE is hotter than her. Only an idiot woulda picked Missy and these dumbasses actually did. Giving people up to 5 grand an episode to guess who's the better looking between 2 celebrities or who's better looking between themselves or another person really is stupid. Let me get on that show I guarantee I'd come out with 5 grand and finally pay off my fuckin college debt and maybe buy a fuckin car too.

Asta!!

I'm a great fan of season two of PMR, the customisations are far cooler (sorry, but it's the only word i can think of too describe it) and the show is a lot slicker compared to the first season.
It's light hearted entertainment, and i personally just love how the staff at WCC do 'pimp' out the cars in ways that you just wouldn't imagine doing otherwise.

All i'm waiting for is PMR:UK

Edit: It seems to me that some people have missed the whole concept around PMR is that they are creating a car that looks 'pimped' (i.e. completly over the top, blinged to death e.t.c), not one that necessarily appeals to the standard view of car customisation. It's the fact that they do this that makes it more enjoyable to watch, and seperates it from other car customisation shows.
They also do engine work where required, but they don't show it because, quite simply, thats not why people watch the program.

I don't mind the concept but as a person that likes his automobiles the "pimpin" they do to some of these cars is an afront to the car hobby. I mean they have done so much just flat out stupid crap to the cars they get it's sickening. They slapped like 22" rims on a 67 Mustang and had the thing looking like a freakin 4 x 4 truck. Then another time they put a freakin bubble machine on an old Foxbody Mustang and gave it a loud gold convertible top. It's like classy isn't in their vocabulary.

And about the engine stuff no they don't do engine work on those cars or if they do they don't show it or do anything of significance. IIRC they even said something along the lines of how they don't do that kind of thing often and considering they show the entire car off from exterior to interior to the trunk you never see them pop the hood.

TLC got it right with Overhaulin. THAT is what a show that does car make overs should be. They take great care to do everything right, engine to tranny to interior.

Which would YOU rather have?
This...http://www.mtv.com/onair/pimp_my_rid...episode_10.jpg

or all of THIS done by people actually respected in their industry?

Well, it's nice to think of what the money could be used to do. Hopefully, when you're earning more money than you need, after college, you'll feel so good, you'll remember to donate to a local charity. I applaud that you're thinking of what an utter waste of money TV can be, not everyone thinks like that. Give your self credit for that.

Remember, though, MTV is not a charity. They are a for-profit business. They spend money to make money. Somewhere in that process we have what's called a "capitalist economy."

That's how people in this country have work, to make their own money, to donate to charities.

20,000 dollars is nothing. Think about how much each member of the cast of friends got for 1 episode. I believe it was something like 1 million an episode for some of the cast. They dont really have a large payment for the cast. So paying for 20,000 dollars worth of stuff in the cars is nothing for a "guest" cast member. Also they probally do not even pay for the stuff anyway. They usually say, or show the bag, that they got it at best buy. I am sure that best buy pays for that ad or gives them the stuff. So that 20,000 that they shell out, is not even shelled out, its advertising.

I find the show entertaining. There have been a few episodes where they showed them doing rewiring and even some engine work. On a few occassions where the cars were really bad, new cars were given out. As for giving to the upper class, um, how can you comment if you have never watched the show, or rarely watched it? Those "upper class homes" definitley don't belong to them, and most of the houses that they go to should not be considered upper class. I'm pretty sure they do some engine work, but don't show it in detail because that isn't what their demographic tunes in for.

As for complaining that it is money that could be spent to better humanity... give me a break. When is the last time you have donated time and a significant ammount of money to charity? Celebrities donate money all the time, but it doesn't go into the news because watching some psycho celeb go to jail for making kiddy porn is better ratings. You haven't owned a television for... one week? All praise you for your sacrifices. Attacking a TV show that promotes a business (West Coast Customs) and brings in advertising revenue because it doesn't go to people who need the money more seems silly.

That show cracks me up. They go obnoxious on everything. They make previously useful storage areas completely worthless by packing in speakers and electronics. They paint with loud colors and bling bling rims.

At some point, before you get offended, you gotta step back and realize that the show is indeed called "Pimp My Ride." The entire concept of 'pimp' should remove all semblance of class, logic, and decency from your mind.

That said, I wouldn't want them to touch my car.

I agree that its excessive, but thats a minimal showcase of excessive right there. what about the millionaire show? what about trading spouses, or ANY of the shows on TV where folks do nothing and get a million bucks at the end. Its advertising dollars and I feel like they are well spent. I like watching pimp my ride, its stupid but fun to see what they will do next. I enjoy it. I think you need to relax if you think that its affecting you in any way.

I have to say, I love this show!
It really showcases some talented craftsmen and their creativity.
After each episode, I feel greatly inspired to do something creative in my own life, though that doesn't necessarily entail bolting a 3' wing on my Civic.

And $20k? That's peanuts.
Most of the television shows you see spend way more than that...it's not a waste, it's improving some kid's life (granted, in a superficial way).
It is kind of funny that most of these cars end up on eBay...they'd rather have the cash than a pimped out ride.

I've seen a couple on eBay. Proof that they pick the wrong people to do this for.

I know several people with some true rattle traps but if you gave them a "pimped" ride they'd baby it.
But then again if I got a car done by those jokers...I'd probably sell it too because I'd be embarassed to be seen in something so crappy. See it and buy an old Thunderbird and fix it up.

laughing while you're stuck doing dishes is a good thing.

what they do to those cars is so off the hook.
personally, i wouldn't want anything so LOUD (look at me) to drive.
but some folks like that. to each their own.

anyway i kinda look at it as artwork. art comes in lots of different packages.
art is subjective. same as these blinged out vehicles.
what these guys do though is undeniably amazing. even if absurd.
they are talented at what they do.

meh... the show isnt bad.. it's that it's on fucking MTV that pisses me off. all the MUSIC stations play less and less music that they should change the name of the station. like when i turn onto mtv or much music(canada) , i see ppl talking, reality shows, comercials, but no music. and the best music is never played.. it's only the fucking saw-100 times-pop-non-original-music video. /end.

i enjoy the show. someone earlier asked why the pimped cars of people that obviously have money or live in a nicer neighborhood and it got me thinking. why can't normal people with normal parents making normal amounts of money have something good given to them? it always seems that trips, opportunities, gifts, scholarships, etc. are only given to innercity kids or kids that have had a rough life. who's to say that they deserve it more? i like it when a regular joe can get something just because. sorry for the off topic "rant". keep pimping them rides!

I hate to be blunt, but a poor kid deserves free money more than a middle-income kid. I know a few people in college that get free money back from the government from FAFSA because their parents are paying for their college and they filled out FAFSA anyway. That's complete bullshit. My parents are rather wealthy and aren't paying for my college. I get shit out of scholarships, grants, and loan rates because of their income and there is nothing I can do about it. So the people I'm talking about get $40,000 free from their parents, then a nice fat $2000 check every semester to spend on whatever they want, all because their parents are paying FOR their college. Where's the love for the guys that are in a shitty situation (me)? Sorry to get off topic. Those people don't deserve the money they get from the government. They get their college for FREE, plus extra spending money. It's a win-win situation while the kids on their own get shit out of everything from the government. Some people DO deserve "free money" moreso than others.

I'm sure that the pimp-ups aren't entirely true though. There's no way some of those shitcans would be on the road. Some episodes seem like they just found the worst car possible and gave it to someone that looked like they'd never have driven it before.

I seriously think the show is entertaining. Xhibit (however you spell it) is hilarious in most episodes. He compared one car to a Mad Max car..that had be laughing all the way to work.
