So I still have to wait till the end of the year, cuz I'm not buying the theatrical release. I own the Ext. Ed. of the first two, so I'll just wait for that again.

Same here. If I'm going to invest in the DVD, its gonna have to be the one with the most bang for my buck. I saw a rumor on TheOneRing.net about the extended edition being AT LEAST 4 hours and 50 minutes. That's fuckin crazy.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the extended gift edition, like I got for the other two. However, if they come out with an extra super special boxed set of the whole shebang, I may buy that too. This is the only series I would do that for, since I have been waiting for this since I first saw that wretched Ralph Bakshi travesty (I bought the DVDs for that too, though.)

Yeah, I'm going to buy the extended release, but I'm sure I'll watch the theatrical enough times before it's released to make it worth it to buy it as well.

yeah, if i ever get it (probably for a present anyway?) it'd hopefully be the Super Douper Extended Special Edition Trilogy Pack of all 3 movies at once; with about 100 hours of extra commentry and stuff like that

Hopefully they get to make the Hobbit as well

Good to see others are waiting for the inevitable super pack as well

Considering how much extra stuff is on the extended editions, I can't imagine much more in a box set of the 3 films. The 3 extended editions will have about 18 hours of extras already....why wait for maybe 30 more minutes?

I own the theatrical versions of the other 2.
Might as well keep the streak going.
It'll be nice if the rumor is true and not have to wait till August.

Then at Christmas I'll buy the "Deluxe Extended Directors' Cut Collector's Platinum Edition, Vol I". And please, please let it cost at least $200.

It's no rumor...the theatrical will be released on May 25th. You can read about it on the offical LOTR web site:

http://lordoftherings.net/index_400_hv_home.html

...or here is part of the press release:

Quote:
The King makes his return in filmmaker Peter Jackson's stunning conclusion to The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, arriving on DVD and VHS on May 25, 2004. The home video debut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will follow the groundbreaking success of the multi-tiered platform releases of both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, and will be available on a two-disc DVD and VHS for $29.95 and $24.97, respectively. A special extended edition of The Return of the King will be released at a later date.

got a nice little setup going. theatrical release comes out, and me and my dad each go half for it. Once the extended edition comes out, he keeps the theatrical and gives me what I paid, and I get the extended edition. He really doesn't like the longer version, and I can't wait for it to come out. So far, it's worked great for the first 2 movies.

I hope that when the others come out I will get those sent to me too.

TheOneRing.net had an interview with Matt Lasorsa, New Line Home Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Marketing. They talk about the upcoming DVD release in May and the extended edition:

http://www.theonering.net/features/i...ttlasorsa.html

Quote:
Since the announcement of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’s May 25 DVD release date, fans have been speculating about details of the content, the packaging and when the Special Extended Edition will hit shelves. Matt Lasorsa, New Line Home Entertainment’s senior vice president of marketing, offers some insight into the muchanticipated home video release in an informative Q&A.

Q: Why May?

A: There is no reason to wait this year. The DVD release dates of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers were dependent on completing the 10-minute look at the next film, which made it impossible to release before August. Without another film to preview, we can release it much earlier.

Q: We’ve heard rumors of a slipcase that will hold all 3 DVDs. How can we get it?

A: We have created a “3-pack” with the theatrical version DVDs of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King – packaged in a slipcase – but the slipcase itself is not sold separately. The “3-pack” does not have any new or exclusive content and will be available at retail stores nationwide.

Q: What extras are on the DVD?

A: Like the last two The Lord of the Rings DVDs, The Return of the King film will be presented on one disc with the highest picture and sound quality possible. In addition to the movie disc, a second disc will include many behind-the-scenes specials, featurettes from lordoftherings.net, TV spots and trailers that debuted during the theatrical release of the film. Also, there will be a preview of the next Electronic Arts video game.

Q: Why isn’t there a preview for the Special Extended Edition?

A: There simply wasn’t enough time to complete it for the May release, and we didn’t believe it would be beneficial to postpone the release date.

Q: When is the Special Extended Edition coming out?

A: It is scheduled to release just before Christmas 2004.

Q: Why isn’t the Special Extended Edition hitting stores earlier, since the theatrical DVD is releasing sooner?

A: Logically, it would seem that it could be done sooner, especially without another Lord of the Rings film to finish; however, that hasn’t been the case. Peter Jackson was quite busy with many commitments during the awards season. Since he was away from New Zealand, he could not cut an extended version of the film. Traditionally, after he cuts the film, there are months and months of work to do to complete the cut – including Howard Shore’s additional score and Weta Digital’s new special effects.

For the special features, many of the interviews with the cast and crew were completed during pickups for the next film, as everyone was in the same place (New Zealand). Now that all filming is complete, everyone is scattered across the world – making it more difficult to get the interviews to create bonus materials.

It would have been ideal to release it sooner, but we didn’t want to compromise the quality of the DVD to get the product in stores earlier.

Q: How long is the Extended version of The Return of the King?

A: It looks like the running time will be over four hours long.

Q: What additional scenes were added?

A: Like The Two Towers extended version, the story of Faramir is shown in greater detail. There are returning characters and new characters, such as Saruman after the flooding of sengard and the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gate. Much of the new footage contains extra dialogue and action to further elaborate on each character’s personal journey.

Q: Will there be a Gift Set this year, and what will be included?

A: Yes, a gift set is in the works, and the content of it is still taking shape. We do believe that the fans will be pleased with the Sideshow Weta sculpture – the artists at Weta have really outdone themselves. Look for us to reveal it in July.

Q: Will there be a money-back offer – similar to years past – if you buy both DVDs?

A: Yes. We will be extending the same mail-in rebate offer as we have for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers – fans who choose to buy both the Theatrical DVD in May and the Extended DVD later this year can receive $5 back by mail (or $10 if they buy the Gift Set). We aren’t requiring cash register receipts for the theatrical DVD, but proofs-of-purchase and receipts for the Special Extended Edition will be required.

Q: Finally, there are many rumors about a mega-special edition “Trilogy Box.” Is there any truth to the rumor?

A: It is certainly something that we talk about creating in the future, but right now we are just concentrating on releasing The Return of the King Theatrical DVD and Extended DVD versions this year. If we do release a “Trilogy Box,” it is at least 2 years away – 2006 or beyond. We would want to have Peter Jackson’s participation, and he will be busy with other projects for at least a year or more. We also would want to make it really special, with never-before seen content, and, until The Return of the King extended DVD is finished, we won’t be in a position to evaluate what materials are still available.

Here are some more details about the ROTK extended edition DVD and the DVD gift set:

http://thedigitalbits.com/#sith

Quote:
from The Digital Bits:

Todd and I were also on hand this weekend as New Line finally revealed more details about the forthcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Special Extended DVD Edition (currently set to street in December - date TBA). The set will feature more than 50 additional minutes of footage, including some 300 additional effect shots. Among the new scenes we were able to preview this weekend were: the final confrontation between Gandalf and Sarumon at Isengard, the "mouth" of Sauron at the Black Gate, Aragorn revealing the sword Anduril to Sauron's eye in the Seeing-stone, the confrontation between the Witch King and Gandalf at Minas Tirith, more battle footage on the Pelennor fields, Frodo and Sam marching with Sauron's forces disguised as Orcs, Faramir telling Denethor that he would never use the power of the Ring, Aragorn looking down upon a fleet of Corsair ships from a ridgetop, Faramir and Éowyn at the House of Healing, Merry pledging allegiance to King Theoden at Gondor, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli narrowly escaping an avalanche of skulls deep inside the Dwimorberg and MUCH more. From what we've seen, this final extended cut promises to be every bit as good as the previous two. We also learned that the set will feature more than 20 hours of supplemental content.

That's not all. In addition to the 4 disc set, there will also be another special collector's gift set, that will include the 4-disc Extended Edition along with a bonus DVD - Howard Shore: Creating the Lord of the Rings Symphony - A Composer's Journey Through Middle-earth - and a miniature Sideshow/Weta statue of Minas Tirith, which doubles as a trinket box. Todd took some photos of the DVD packaging, so we'll get those posted as soon as we can.

Thats a link for details on all the new scenes in the extended edition. It also talks about what happened at comicon and some other stuff. I didn't read through it all, but I did kind of skim and one thing caught my eye.

Spoiler: A fight between Gandalf and The Witch King. I was a little disappointed at the lack of wizardry in ROTK by Gandalf. Hopefully this fight will make up for it.

I just bought the Extended Edition and watched it last night. I had forgotten how good this movie was since seeing in the theater. I had also forgotten how long it is, especially now with the extra 50 minutes. I definately didn't mind because I thought some of the new scenes seriously helped add to the story.

I did have one disappointment though, Spoiler: I was hoping for a little more drama in the Gandalf / Witch King confrentation. I don't remember if it talked about it in the book so I can't say if its accurate from there, but it seemed like awesome buildup and then boom, broken staff without Gandalf even making an awesome stand as it gets broken, and scene over. But even still, I definately liked it and was glad it was in there.

I also liked Spoiler: how they tied together Saruman's fate in the book after the spoiling of the shire and moved it to his confrentation with Gandalf. Obviously its not the same as if the whole spoiling the shire part was in there, but I understand this cut and thought this scene helped tie up that plotline which was lost in the teatrical cut..

Also, concerning the pictured extended edition box set shown above, that is actually something you can order for only $3 shipping and handling to put all three of your previously bought extended editions together in. And since I'm a sucker for this type of thing, I'll most likely be doing so shortly.
