Lucas is an ass-hat. No original versions released? What a fuck face.

why would he perpetuate the Han Solo shooting first scene?

I'm looking forward to the box set, but still I'm sure that there would be the "Ultimate box set once the 3rd movie is released on DVD in 2006 or 2007.

reverendjay 02-10-2004 07:48 AM

Cynthetiq I'm willing to bet that everyone hoping for the "Ultimate Box Set" is exactly what he is counting on. That way we spend our 30-50 bucks in september, and another 10-15 when ep. 3 comes out in the movies, and another 15-20 when ep. 3 comes out on dvd...

He knows that with the quality of the 'prequels' that no one is going to want to see episodes 7,8 and 9. He's got to get his cash where he can.

Remember the beginning of the VHS of the THX remastered trilogy? It said something to the effect of "the original Star Wars trilogy on video... one last time..." It seems they weren't lying.

Anyways, the DVDs should be pretty cool and worth every penny.

gilada 02-10-2004 08:21 AM

I'm sure he'll take us to the bank in the future with an 'original trilogy - original version' dvd set.

Sparhawk 02-10-2004 08:55 AM

It'll look good between my Back to the Future and Indiana Jones box sets :D

Yeah, really. I dont want the ones that he fucked with, I want the original ones.

mattevil 02-10-2004 10:09 AM

i really wish someone would organize a boycott of the special editions when they come out but you know they'll be fanboys that'll pick them up by the truckload and support Lucas's rape of the originals.I'm not buying till its original no ifs ands or buts.

Mr.Deflok 02-10-2004 11:20 AM

You all may say you aren't gonna buy this set but it'll still be one of the best selling DVD's of all time.

The insertion of Jabba was poorly done but if pulled off right could've been a great scene, the musical number in Jabba's palace was just nuts. Though it'd be nice to see the Original's again I don't really have a problem with Special Editions enough to make me be an ass and boycott the movies I love so much.

Besides if we're going to be nitpicky about the additional scenes why don't we just get all flustered about how the film no longer will have it's original audio track, been enhanced and reworked now, also, let's throw a shit about how good the image quality is... then let's complain about how the Lak Sivrak got replaced by a better looking alien.

There were rumours around last year that the Special Editions were going to be further enhanced with yet more additional scenes and special effects like Obi-Wans lightsaber looking more correct in ANH and McDiamand playing Palpatine in ESB to replace the other actor in the hologram..

bltzkriegmcanon 02-10-2004 12:02 PM

Meh, whether or not Lucas is an extreme smacktard, I'll still probably add this dvd to my collection.

i beg to differ... there will be others that will perpetuate it. It's a profitable franchise so it will make money.

Too true! BTW, Jin-Roh is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. {EDIT} moonstrucksoul's avatar was from Jin-Roh, I say this so I don't look like a nutter {/EDIT}

Tophat665 02-12-2004 04:05 AM

There will come a time when the original version is available again. There will also come a time when the original and "enhanced" versions are available together. I'll wait. Lucas has gone from visionary genius to pathetic, demented, petulant fucktard in my estimation with his idiot "artistic prerogative" or whateverthehell lame excuse he decided to use to rape my memory. He can have my money, but he'll have to earn it.

Batman976 02-12-2004 02:17 PM

I'm pretty upset with the way they're releasing this set. I feel they set a very high standard with the 2-disc releases of episodes 1 & 2 that they can't meet with a 4-disc box set. Each film deserves it's own special features disc.

I'm with those of you who want the theatrical versions too. Spielberg did it with E.T. why couldn't Lucas follow suit?

In my perfect world, it would be 2 discs, special edition on one disc, theatrical on the other. Spread the bonus features across both discs.

the big diff is the fact that ep 1 and 2 were made for the digital format, with the DVD features in mind. The original trilogy was made without any such precognition.

yellowgowild 02-13-2004 12:50 AM

Has anyone else noticed that the quality of Lucas's movies declined as soon as Joseph Campbell died? Seems like all the inspiration and talent was comming from other people the whole time.

Starwars has become a cultural icon, an American instution. But sadly, it doesn't really belong to us and he can do whatever he wants to it.

exactly, there just isn't that much stuff for episodes IV, V, and VI.
most of which we have already seen in the 'Star Wars' to 'Jedi' " documentary they released a long time ago.

That's awesome as shit.

Mr.Deflok 03-22-2004 12:26 PM

Are those pics real? They released some pics on Hyperspace but it's illegal to host them anywhere else.

Either way, cool! Though I like the concept boxes a hell of a lot more.

FaderMonkey 03-22-2004 12:45 PM

I don't think there has been any official word from Lucasfilm yet, but this artwork is popping up on a lot of DVD news sites. I agree that the concept boxes were much better.

I doubt this would happen, as you then would have two copies of the movie for the price of one...you could give one to your mate/sell it/whatever.

If something like this were to happen, it would probably be on a two sided disc.

same here, not a huge fan of the Star Wars trilogy but I especially do not want to see the first one in the remastered/butchered form.

Crap... ah well, still happy with the films, just wish we got those other boxes too.

Cynthetiq 03-23-2004 07:29 AM

:) wheee!!! new DVD box set to add to my collection!

Locobot 03-23-2004 05:16 PM

Since I rarely ever watch the 2 vhs sets I already own I think I'll skipping this round of releases. Lucas will have to rely on the rest of you suckers so he can fill out his ivory backscratcher collection.

Derwood 03-23-2004 05:26 PM

Lucas' problem in recent years is that he is a "style over substance" director. He thinks the original trilogy is better because of the cosmetic changes, blind to the fact that what SW fans love about the original trilogy ISN'T the lasers and the battles, but a GOOD STORY.

What the prequels lack is that good story. They are all flash and eye candy, but the story is bland and lifeless.

Lucas has lost the heart.

FaderMonkey 04-06-2004 12:07 PM

A detailed list of the special features has been released. These are probably the only reason I'll end up buying the DVD set:

from TheDigitalBits.com:

-Star Wars: The Independent Films feature length documentary - The story of Star Wars is the story of the most successful independent series film ever produced. It's the story of a Hollywood outsider named George Lucas and a low-budget labor of love space saga that defied the odds and reinvented the rules. It's the story of a revolution born of a dream. It's the story of an independent filmmaker who had to innovate and invent an entirely new way of creating motion pictures. It's the story of a fundamental paradigm shift in the creative process made, not by the studio system, but by a single filmmaker with a simple dream. (150 min.)

The groundbreaking special effects that were pioneered to make Star Wars movies not only helped viewers escape to a galaxy far, far away, but they changed the way every movie was made thereafter. Experience never before seen effects innovations from the films and learn how pivotal the films were to modern effects wizards and filmmakers. (20 min.)

-Lightsabers/Fights featurette - Forget laser pistols, the lightsaber is the coolest weapon in the Star Wars galaxy. What were George's influences for creating the lightsaber? How did Mark Hamill, Alec Guiness, and Darth Vader stunt people approach wielding a saber? How did the effects guys figure out the lightsaber beam? How did each fight escalate from the previous one? And what influences did this creation have on movies thereafter? (10 min.)

-1977 Featurette -Transport people back in time to the opening of each Star Wars film. Menus will showcase all the pop culture features from the 1977 opening such as: TV references, toy ads, promotional partner commercials, news clips, songs inspired by Star Wars, Star Wars magazine and newspaper coverage, classic video game demos. This segment answers some key questions: who created it? was it made for Hayden? Section Three - The Actors: Finally I get to become Vader. Key interviews with the cast (including Hayden) and crew sharing their thoughts and experiences about working on the last Star Wars film and finally seeing the completion of the Saga. (10 min.)

Pretty damn cool. Sounds pretty indepth.

actually I have quite a few movies that come with fullscreen/widescreen on 2 discs. They were no more expensive than any other movie on the shelf. Reservoir Dogs, for example. I would say both versions of the film should be released on the same disc, with the option of playing one or the other like T2 special edition or Memento, for example

Gjefflin 06-12-2004 05:20 PM

I can't WAIT for this to come out!!! I still have the VHS 3 tape set. I never use these anymore.

LordEden 06-14-2004 07:12 AM

I want it..... Star wars, can't beat it with a broke lightsaber :)

I got the new Entertainment Weekly today and it had a snippet about this box set. If I read it correctly, it said that Episode III is called "The Return of Darth Vader"? Or is that the name of the featurette that previews Episode III?
