So good, you bought the DVD

So my wife and I were recently out shopping in Grace Brothers, a large department store in Sydney. I always end up in the "media section", either browsing the Jazz CDs, the bookshop or perusing their DVD selection.

We ended up buying a few DVDs and it occurred to me to ask my fellow board members "What movie was so good that you bought the DVD?"

For the record, my purchases were as follows:

A Man for All Seasons
Breakfast at Tiffanys
Roman Holiday
The Mission
My Fair Lady

Non-movie DVDs I've bought recently include ALL of David Attenborough's nature series (Life of Birds, Blue Planet, Trials of Life, Life of Mammals, Secret Life of Plants etc), Sister Wendy's Story of Painting, Ken Burn's Civil War & Jazz and the World at War.

As you can see, I like my non-fiction! But there are some movies I just want to own. Strange, as I don't watch them THAT often...

Next on the purchase list is

Casablanca
The Lady Killers
Arsenic and Old Lace

I'm sure I'll find some others in the classics section...

I'm sure im not alone by mentioning that I buy all my dvd's cause i think they are good enough to own. I'm sure I could list all 50 or so, but who buys a dvd cause it's not good enough to own?

CinnamonGirl 02-04-2004 03:48 AM

Yeah...pretty much. If I didn't want to own it in the first place, I wouldn't buy it, right? :)

There are a few movies, though, that as soon as I see them in the theatre, I think "must have this DVD!" Chicago, Bridget Jones, and Lord of the Rings all fit into that category.

Kostya 02-04-2004 05:21 AM

Ah Mr. Mephisto, some oldschool films there.

I personally own over 50 films on DVD which I watch on a regular basis. I simply got tired of paying to rent them out from the video store every time, and eventually hope to cut them out of the equation altogether.

Some of the movies I own, I watch a ridiculous amount of times, such as 'The Godfather' and 'Evil Dead III', others I watch maybe three or four times a year.

Plus it's just good to own them in case somebody comes around to your house and wants to watch something...

Indy Jones. Yup..

Rubyee 02-04-2004 02:50 PM

Oh geeze, I don't think I could begin to list them. But my most favorite DVD purchase so far has to be Baseketball.

Cynthetiq 02-04-2004 03:16 PM

I have plenty of DVD's and in my economic nonsensical head... going to the movies costs US$21 for me and the wife to attend. No popcorn or beverages.

So any movie that hits the US$19.99 mark, it's instantly something that makes sense to buy even if it's a crap movie because it's the same price without the annoying cellphone, crying child, and annoying tall person.

micah67 02-04-2004 04:28 PM

I didn't see "Magnolia" in the theater but when I was on vacation I watched it at the rental. I wanted to watch it again and again so I bought it the next day.

My DVD collection tends to have an indie slant. Not that they're all independent films, but many of them are outside the mainstream. The big-budget Hollywood films I can borrow from my friends.

That said, these are my most recent purchases:

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
One Hour Photo

lord of the rings, the extended editions are a must have

Cobalt_60 02-04-2004 11:24 PM

For me the must have movie I saw was Band Of Brother's. Not really a movie, more like a mini series. But every one was great. I watched each weekend as a new one came out and looked forward to the next.

Mr.Deflok 02-05-2004 12:57 AM

Nearly have 200 DVD's, and as for films that have made me say "I've gotta get this on DVD when it comes out!" Only two stick in my mind, ROTK and more poignantly, The Last Samurai.

MexicanOnABike 02-08-2004 07:31 PM

fight club, full metal jacket, pulp fiction, office space, falling down, pulp fiction, usual suspects, true romance, lock stock and two smoking barrels, t2, reservoir dogs, pulp fiction, and pulp fiction.

ps:also get pulp fiction collectors edition.

FlorentinoAriza 02-09-2004 03:03 AM

in 2 years my collection has grown to +- 300 movies, about 60 % of those i buy because i liked, and the others i buy because they are not available for rent or in the theaters here. (import asia/latin america).

most recent 'so good i had to buy it' dvd : 'Angela' (Rebecca Miller). Decided to go for the r1 dvd. seen it once in 95 and wanting to see it even since.

Batman976 02-12-2004 01:59 PM

I also have over 200 DVDs, several of them were purchased without having seen the movies. I'd buy things on a recommendation or just because it looked good. Some I've bought just for the sake of completing a collection.
