Has anyone seen Equlibrium?

If you haven't seen this movie, I recommend it with two... maybe even three if David will let me steal his thumb, thumbs up.

It's like 1984 meets the Matrix.

If anyone has seen it, vouch for me on this one. It's a wonderful WONDERFUL flick.

This movie got trashed by a lot of critics, but its really not all that bad. Sure, its a little cheesy and derivative at times, but its got alot more going for it than most other mindless action films.

Saw it a few days ago, its a GREAT movie! I definently recommend it to anyone. The action sequences are incredible, and its very well acted. Christian Bale remains one of my favorite actors, and he really stands out in this film.

I just rented it on Thursday. I called it Fahrenheit 451 meets The Matrix. Gives the vision of a grim, gloomy, emotionless future, with brief bursts of action. I cringed at the sound of the dogs getting shot. Christian Bale plays one bad ass dude in that movie. I didn't realize he was not giving it all he had when he fought Taye Diggs the first time..... Till he mopped the floor with his ass at the end. That was too cool!!!!!!!

saw it this week. it's got some kickass action in it, but some parts dragged on and on. also, the ending fight inside the room with all the other clerics was weaker than it should have been, especially between preston and the taye diggs guy

Very unusual gun fight scenes... Christian Bale's character development is predictable and very badly realised. That didn't detract from the film though. I thought that after the Matrix there would be a whole load of cheap spin-offs, but I was surprised - this is a really entertaining movie with sound philosophical background.

Here's the question that my roommate and I had:

Was there anyone else that thought, "Why don't you just take the drug? You only missed one dose, how bad could it really be?"

That was probably my only fault with the movie, they made his descent into 'feeling' so freaking difficult that you almost wished he would switch back to the way he was.

Excellent movie! They took 1984 and added Matrix-caliber action and a decent ending (which the book lacked). I think there's a bit of Farenheit 151 in there also.

I dunno, I just saw it over the weekend, mostly because of the recommendations of everyone here, and I thought the movie was terrible. Yeah it was a mix of The Matrix and 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 and Thx-1138 and Total Recall and I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them. The thing is that even though so many of the ideas of this film were taken from really great sources, there was nothing new that was done. There was no new spin. No new ideas, except the Gun Kata. Which they spent all of 30 seconds on.

The acting in it was really bad in some parts, and the dialogue wasn't thought out well at all. Taye Diggs(?), the black Cleric, seemed to be very happy and smiley all throughout the movie. Which in a society were emotions are outlawed I would thing that would be a criminal offense, or just bad acting. Throughout the movie everyone kept using words to describe emotions/how they were feeling. If the government was really to outlaw emotions they would, just like in 1984, outlaw the words to describe these emotions. Not to mention if everyone doped up there would be no need for these words.

Neither would there be need for the standard family unit. No mother, no father, no husbands, no wives, no sons, no daughters, etc.... So the very backstory of the movie makes no sense. How do you raise a family when your devoid of emotions? How/Why do you have a wife?

I'm not saying that there are plot holes in the movie that you could drive a double decker bus towing an 747 through, but, okay that is what I'm saying. Maybe if they'd developed more of the story it would have cleared some of this up. And that has nothing to do with how much money the film makers had, only dedication.

That and Robert the Bruce and the blind guy from Contact really bothered me.

(oh and I really like Christian Bale so I was doublely miffed)

Empire of the Sun, great movie.

Flame on.

These come from boards I read about he movie. The family unit is a holdover from past societies a vestigial structer thats to help ease the transition. At the begginning Diggs is emotionless towards the end he smiles..Him and the "father" have been off the dose.

You misunderstand the movie.

Emotion is, indeed, allowed. "Prosium" as it's called in the movie merely curbs emotion. They still feel, and they still have desire, and want to earn a career, but they never feel happy and they never feel sad. By taking this drug, they remove all extremes of emotion, not every emotion.

Another thing I should point out... Taye Diggs OBVIOUSLY did not mean that smile. It's one thing to smile, and be warm and mean it. In his case, it was a response to a stimulus, nothing more.

Have you ever smiled at someone you hate while you hated them?

Great movie. The only part I thought was kinda dumb was the slow motion pistol whip scene. Just the slow motion part with the "dramatic" music. Once he started smashing the helmets it was good. I gotta go get the DVD sometime soon.

Equilibrium is a love-it or hate-it film, I love it but can see quite a few major flaws in it overall, the greatest one is mentioed above with the "dramatic" music playing with Bale busts some heads.

I do all right. The person I watched it with hated it as well, so that's one. We just couldn't handle the cheesy moments, such as the rainbow or the smile at the end, or the incredible transparency of the plot, and the fighting sequences weren't even that great and certainly weren't enough to save the rest of the movie. One of my best friends loved it, the other was the one I watched it with(at the urging of the first). So I'd say the movie is 33% good, 66% crap, with a 1% margin of error.

I don't really understand the comparisons to the Matrix. The movie is very derivitive, yes, but it takes so much more from the major dystopian novels (1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451). The only connection to Matrix I can find is they both contain action sequences.

Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this movie. The first time I watched it, I had difficulty getting past all the homages to the dystopian novels, but repeated viewings were much more enjoyable.

My only complaints regard the firefighter aspects. Why the need to verify the Mona Lisa's authenticity, if a copy would be just as illegal as the original? And why keep a repository of illegal material, and what gets kept in this repository vs. what gets burnt on the scene?

How often do we get to see a good dystopian movie?! Another vote for good here. Too often do we get a space battle or a martial arts fight with no substance. Kudos to Equilibrium.
