2004 Oscar Nominations
 

I can't believe somebody hasn't posted this already....if this is a repeat, please shoot me...in any case, here are the Oscar nominees.

Nice to see Billy Murray and Diane Keaton get nominations (usually comedies are grossly overlooked). Also, I was surprised that Depp got a nomination, and that Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were all completely overlooked. Oh, and that LOTR didn't get a Cinemetography nod.

And I was secretly hoping Finding Nemo would get a best pic nomination. :(

i can't believe cold mountain wasn't nominated for best picture...

I agree that "Finding Nemo" was a good movie and I really enjoyed it. But not because of its screenplay, rather in spite of it. It was the same damn Disney-esque twadle we've been watching for 20 years. I just find it mind boggling that a screen play like that was chosen.

Doesn't matter, "In America" is going to win anyway.

I saw House of Sand and Fog last weekend. It wsa sort of dull and depressing to see character after character self-destructing, but Kingsley was definitely the man. I am glad he got the recognition through nomination!

Good to see ROTK get all the noms it deserves, since I figure it won't win squat.

I'm with you. I thought it was going to win Best Picture. I'll come up with my predictions and post them later.

I hope that it at least gets a few of all of the ones that it was nominated for, especially Best Picture...

I bet it will win Best Picture and Best Director.

Like I said in the Golden Globes Thread, Watanabe deserves this award more than words can describe. If out of all my Oscar predictions Watanabe winning is the only one to actually happen I'll still be happy.

If Johnny Depp doesn't win I'm gonna blow up Hollywood.

As much as I like PJ and all he's done, it seems to me the academy will drool over Sophia Coppolla (and don't even get me started on her).

All I can say is, I have not seen any of these films. Guess i need to get out to the theatre more. I never really got excited about the Oscars, just so much hype.

Tom Cruise? Seriously? He hasn't broken out of the character he did in Cocktail yet.

i can. it's the perfect example of an undeservedly over-hyped film. Renee Zellweger is the only award-worthy element there.

I reaaaaaally hope Ken Watanabe wins BSA. He deserves it more than anybody else.

I, too, was glad to see Depp nominated, he was fantastic in "Pirates", and too often, comedy is overlooked, even though "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard." Most actors can agree with that.

I was also disappointed to see "old Mountain"snubbed, i thought it was a beautiful film (though i was glad to see it recognized for its Cinematography.

It's also nice to see ROTK making some headway, i hope it takes at least a few categories.

How about we borrow it without permission and right a few wrongs, ya savvy?

I don't really understand this category well enough to comment, so I hereby declare it abolished.

oh i'm pissed about it. They AT LEAST deserved a NOMINATION. I MEAN DAMN! That was one of THE BEST movies of 2003. And the fact that Jude Law got a nomination and Nicole didn't!?... WTF...the whole movie was about Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger's characters. Jude was good in it, but it was Nicole's movie.

It's obvious they wanted this to be an easy win for LOTR for Best Picture and Director. Not that they aren't deserving of it, and in fact I think they SHOULD win with all the money those movies have made, the time it took to make them, and the legacy they are going to leave in cinema. But the fact remains that Cold Mountain and Nicole Kidman were JIPPED.

And so was her ex Tom Cruise. He shoulda got nominated for Last Samurai. That's a big upset. What are they thinking this year honestly.

And if Diane Keaton wins for Something's Gotta Give, this shit is bogus. It was an OK movie, but NOT Oscar-worthy. It better now go to Charlize Theron for Monster.

I agree with you, Cold Mountain should have got nominated, in my opinion, they could have switched out Mystic River for Cold Mountain, and that would have been better. Mystic River was overrated. Yeah, switch out Diane Keaton for Nicole Kidman, that'd be allright with me. There are always Oscar snubs, because there usually are some pretty deserving pictures and actors and actresses out there and you can't nominate them all. Oh well, I think if common people like us ran the Oscars it'd be much better.

I have not seen the movie but I read Mystic River, by Dennis Lehane, last summer and it was the best book I have ever read. I am glad to see it received 4 nominations. Further I hope the Swedish movie Evil wins "Best Foreign..", it is a great movie. Though I have not seen most I was realy enjoying mr Depps performance and hopes he wins too.

^well supposedly the movie sways away from the book on a couple things. That's just what I've read on the net though; I haven't read the book so I couldn't tell you. Although the movie is really good.

But if Depp wins best actor for Pirates of the Caribbean it'll be a travesty; I'm sorry, that'd just be a big ass shame...

Why LOTR:ROTK wasn't nominated for any acting-related awards is beyond me. Sean Astin should CERTAINLY have gotten a nomination for best supporting actor... he was incredible. I guess Peter Jackson was right when he said that people don't take the acting seriously when the actors are hobbits or dwarves or elves.

If theres a film that DOESN'T BELONG in that Best Film Catergory, its Seabiscuit.
imo Mystic River was a excellent film. Seabiscuit was utter crap. sure, it may be an All-American story, and that appeals to the Academy. but to me it came across as incoherent, sappy and poorly constructed.
if we must put Cold Mountain in, then Mystic River shouldn't be its replacement on the bench. As over-hyped as i feel Cold Mountain is, i do think its more deserving of a nomination than Seabiscuit.

thats an interesting point. but its true. i thought the film as a whole was spectacular, but until you mentioned it, i wouldn't have considered any of the individual performances as brilliant. i wonder if this lack of acting nominations for LOTR has anything to do with the fact the subject matter.
i mean, (and this is just a theory) did the fantastical events that were constantly going on in the movie push the characters into over-acting? or is it just that elves and hobbits aren't eligible for nomination?

;) Though the performances were great in the LOTR series none of them were amazing, sure Astin and Mortinsen were brilliant but I wasn't struck by their performances like I have been with other actors.

I thought Astin was brilliant, especially considering the OTHER supporting-actor candidates. Ian Mackellan wasn't bad either.

No matrix anywhere to be seen....

But we all cant have what we want can we. There were too many characters within ROTK to really give one actor a supporting nod, imo. Im sure it will take home some nice tech awards.

Rest of the list seems in check, sure here and there id drop a film to pick up another but overall its decent nods...now to watch whom holds the gold.

BUT i've got to say, the Virgin Suicides was a fantastic film. sublime, subtle and extremely well put together. Lost in Translation is a masterpiece. every aspect of it is suberb. and imo, its well worthy of this years best pic (yes, shock horror, above LOTR).

so if she is just playing around with daddy's money... then i hope daddys got lots more, so that we see a lot more of her work.
