I approach anime like I approach a movie... some are good, some are horrible... Its like the characters are actors with one time roles :D
|
I don't understand the pro and con reactions to anime and manga.
Anime is a medium, not a genre! Saying that you don't like anime is like saying you don't like movies. The only thing that all anime have in common (and the only thing that might differentiate it with what you currently watch, if anything) is that they're animated and they're made by the Japanese. If you don't like animation or if you don't like the Japanese, that's one thing, but that has little to do with anime. It's also interesting to note that manga constitutes almost 40% of the Japanese print industry, so they take that stuff pretty seriously.... |
40%? Wow, I wasn't aware of that.
I wonder how much of it is deviant perverted stuff. :D |
Can't say I'm a fan either. The animation/stories always tend to have the same themes, and I just find them boring.
|
If you think they all have the same themes, you're not watching very many, or you have terrible luck in selecting them.

All it takes is one episode of a stereotypical anime show with exaggerated body movement and expressions, beefy robots, giggly schoolgirls, and, worst of all, dubbed voice acting so hammy that it's not even laughable--and most people will be heading for the exit or flipping the channel every time after that. However, if you watch Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, or Akira your first time out, everything will be different. Well, maybe not in the case of Akira, because it's kind of weird.
Subtitled versions are generally better because the voice actors in Japan are highly-paid and respected professionals. You can't understand a word they're saying of course, but they actually act the role instead of speaking it. I recommend, though, sticking to recommendations, rather than sitting down with your local anime geek and watching whatever he's watching. And Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is much better than the one that came out 19 years ago, when the art form wasn't much better visually than our Saturday morning cartoons back then. That's the biggest barrier to enjoying that one. Just stick with Bloodlust. |
First anime ever was on Sci-fi and it was Iria. Then akira special was on the next day I was hooked
Of course, I also saw some really bad stuff after that. Kinda threw me outta the loop. |
the only anime i have found interesting is Gunbuster, any other anime is too off the wall for me to enjoy
|
I have only watched a few animes. My friend like yours is obsessed with them. I have learned that I only like a few of them and I have to be in the mood for them or I don't enjoy it. So the answer to your question is .... yes but there are some that I do ocassionally enjoy.
|
I didn't mean to say that dubbed anime isn't good. Just that to me, something is always "lost in the translation."
Example of this is in Neon Genesis Evangelion. In the japanese version i cared about Shinji and thought that everything going on with his personal life was sad. However, in the english version i thought he was "whiney" and i ended up not really liking him very much. But that is just my opinion :) |
I am a pretty big anime fan myself, not all of them are boring, you just need to expand your viewing of it, unless animation in general isn't your thing.
|
I cannot understand what people like about anime. The anime I have personally seen (and yes, I have given it an honest chance) is crappy, blocky, big-eyed animation, insipid, corny dialog and really, really, bad plotlines (and don't get me wrong, I mean absolutely no offense to true fans of anime).
If someone could possibly recommend something tasteful and well-done to me (that would not leave me feeling like I just had to sit through a bad two hour episode of pokemon) perhaps my opinion would change. |
I actually didn't start to watch Anime till hrm maybe about a week ago..before I didn't really get it but I think the drawings are pretty amazing and the action isn't half bad..still not my favorite stuff but it is new to me..
|
I have always been impressed with the drawings and the time put into making all of these films but I just cant get into them. I would much rather watch The Simpsons!

I'm sorry but a lot of you guys watch a lot of crap anime. There is plenty of good even excellent anime out there, you just got to research and look for it. Most of it is fansubbed and never brought over here to the states. I roll my eyes each time I talk to casual watchers of anime about their favorite anime. It's always Ninja scroll, Akira, or Ghost in the Shell, Blood: The Last Vampire, or the latest mediocre to crappy anime brought over and dumbed down for american audiences. It's like people only listen to music on the radio or fed to them by mtv, and don't bother looking into independant artists etc.. Maybe I'm an elitist I don't know. Anyway I highly recommend checking out http://www.animenfo.com. It's an excellent resource for finding good anime. Good luck!

Not into it now, but back in like 8th grade, my friends thought it was cool, so i hitched on the bandwagon....that died down for me after a couple of months.
Reminds me, though. I was working at the local farmer's market my town has every summer, and this kid, like 10 years old, shows up, sets up a table with all his Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z and whatnot, and a little sign saying "Play or Trade". I don't think anyone stopped by all day, I felt so bad for him. |

before watching any anime...check the rating of it here first |
This is like saying Movies are boring, or cartoons are boring. There is a gigantic array of genres of anime and styles, etc. There's always something for someone, IMHO.
Trigun seems to be a series that everyone who has seen seems to like. You might try that? |
Anime just seems repetative, it's all flash and little story, ive seen plenty of anime where they all fit the same mold with slightly different effect, it doesn't impress me at all
|
Notice: replace the word anime in the above statement with any of the following words / phrases
"movies", ":books", "albums" This folks is called a blanket statement.. it is suually made by someone who is jaded or ignorant. You also could have replaced the previous statement with garbled gibberish. It would have had the same effect. Now back to your regularly scheduled flaming.. |
The only Anime I could get into is Cowboy Bebop. As far as the other stuff not interested.

I agree totally.... Sounds like a statement from someone who hasn't even sat down and honestly watched it. Whether you like it or not, you can't say it's all the same, or you're just not paying attention |
I enjoy anime, and how my roomate has no idea what it is yet will try to make fun of it.
he will say things like "watching that dubbed manga again? What happened to the hentai you were watching (hentai to him meaning anime- any show or movie in japanimation)" either that or make horrible impressions of japanese language, basically a nonsensical blabber, and go back to watching star trek. heh. |
Does astroboy count?
|
liked as a kid...not a fan now...annoys me more than anything. Well except the porn pics...those are funny...lol
