Good bookshelf speakers to replace tower speakers?
 

My room is getting cramped and my tower speakers must go. I want to replace them with some good bookshelf speakers for no more than $400/pair. I know I won't get everything I had in the towers in a smaller speaker, but I've got a nice center, and a sub for the bass - so I just need something that is all around good.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I was looking at some stuff by Boston Acoustics about a year ago that sounded really good. I ended up getting the towers because I had nowhere to put the bookshelves, but I actually thought some of the bookshelves sounded better. Check them out, they have some stuff under 400 that sounds pretty good.

Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350

A little over your price range, but believe me.. they are WELL worth it. I have a set of BP10's and absolutely love them. Rock solid bass down to 25 Hz from only 2 6.5" drivers. Definitive makes an awesome speaker with a 100% dead, non resonating cabinet. Trust me, you'll be blown away.

$329 each? Ouch. The specs look great.. any place have them for cheaper?
I'm going to go to some local audio stores tomorrow and see if I can't hear something I like.

Regardless of the suggestions we or others may give you, you need to listen to them for yourself. What we may like, you may hate. For example, many people like Klipsch speakers and recommended them to me, but when I went to listen to them, I discovered that I didnt like their sound, or the sound from any other horn-driven speakers.

My point is simple--go listen to them before you buy them. Take some time, you dont want to end up with speakers you dont like.

True, true - it's just that it's been a long time since I've done any audio shopping and I don't really know what's good anymore.

I never did like Klipsch's either..

I know what some people think about Bose, but the Bose 301's were the best sounding bookshelf speekers there, better sounding than the Bose Towers, i though. They run about $300 for a pair.

The 350's are $249 each. The 450's are $329 each... and will leave you speachless after a listen.


I thought this was a thread to help him find good speakers... not pieces of shit with a brilliant advertising campaign.

I wish my parents knew.. they bought themselves one of those "LifeStyle" systems - it is ok but the $200 computer speakers I have sound better.

I think I'm also going to look at towers that are skinnier because mine are 15" wide and 15" deep.

Well, I ended up spending twice what I expected and got myself some Polk RTi150 speakers.

I wish people realized what they could get in a real home theater system for the money they spend on those shitty Lifestyle systems. I had a lady come in looking for a DVD player for the Lifestyle 25 system she just bought her husband. She said "well he really loves music, so I got the Bose system for him." She told me what she spent on it. I showed her a Klipsch Cinema 10 system (small 5.25" satellites, 200 watt powered 10") on an entry level Yamaha receiver and condescendingly asked her if her wonderful Bose system could do this as I began to pour on the volume. "See what can be had for much less money?"

Nice bookshelves.. lol. I've never been a fan of Polk, but that's a hell of a deal you got there. Get back to me in a few weeks and tell me what you think of them.

I've always liked polk and couldn't pass up the deal. Unless they come this week, I won't know how they sound until March 13 when I come back home.

These will still save me more room. Plus whenever I get my own place, I can dedicate one room and use my new with the old floorstanding speakers :D

Good call. Like I said, when I bought my speakers about a year ago, I was looking at bookshelves until I found the towers that I have now. Because they are towers, I didnt have to find a place to put them, and they fit just fine where I wanted them to. I am very happy with them. Unfortunately, because I am at school, they are sitting in my room at home, not here with me :(

They sound amazing right out the box, I can't wait to break them in!

They're some heavy SOBs @ 85 pounds each! Talk about fun getting them upstairs.
