Well, it isn't up to the actors whether or not the DVDs are coming. They're already in the process of being made. All the hoopla is about which actors are going to participate in recording the extras; interviews, commentaries, etc.

Executives at Castle Rock Television, which produced the show for NBC, and Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, which will distribute the DVD, "were only willing to give a small recording fee to the three of them and not a piece of the action," said a representative for one of the actors, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "So they all said, `Why should we make other people richer?' "

Spokesmen for the three actors said they could not be reached for comment on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Jerry Seinfeld said he was disappointed that his three co-stars had decided to sit out the making of the DVD, which will feature extensive interviews with other cast members, writers and producers of the show.

"Jerry has enormous respect for Jason, Julia and Michael, and he had a great experience working with them on the show," said the spokeswoman, Elizabeth Clark. "He hopes they will participate in the DVD." Ms. Clark said Mr. Seinfeld hoped to talk to them after the New Year and persuade them to change their minds.

"Seinfeld," which ran from 1990 to 1998, remains one of the most successful comedy shows in television history and still plays in syndication across much of the country. The DVD of the show would seem destined to sell millions of copies.

The show continues to generate millions of dollars in revenue for its co-creators and executive producers, Mr. Seinfeld and Larry David, though the last original episode was broadcast five years ago. Mr. David did not return calls seeking comment.

The three boycotting actors earn residual payments from the show's reruns, a fee determined by the Screen Actors Guild. A representative for one of the actors estimated the fee at $100,000 a year.

Discontent over the sharing of the "Seinfeld" riches has arisen with Mr. Seinfeld's three co-stars before. In the last few years of the show the actors had sought to become part owners of the show, like Mr. Seinfeld.

They famously sought $1 million an episode for the last year of the show, 1998, in part because they said they thought they had been underpaid for many seasons. They ended up with about $600,000 a show, then a whopping sum for television.

A complicating factor is that "Seinfeld" is now owned by a handful of corporate entities. After the original "Seinfeld" deal was negotiated, Castle Rock Television was bought by Turner Broadcasting, which was bought by Time Warner. This means that Time Warner, Columbia TriStar Television, Castle Rock, Mr. Seinfeld and Mr. David will all take profits from the DVD.

Without the participation of three of the main cast members, the DVD will be significantly less interesting, executives close to the project acknowledged.

"It's never been just about the episodes; it's really about the value added," said Fritz Friedman, a senior vice president at Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. "That's what takes so much time. That's why so much is up in the air — the concept, the taping, the schedules of people involved. Fans complain if we release bare-bones product. On something like `Seinfeld,' people won't be happy if we just put the episodes on there."

Castle Rock is working on the DVD of the first "Seinfeld" season, aiming to release it in December 2004. Plans call for the eventual release of all nine seasons.

Though taped in Hollywood, "Seinfeld," set in Manhattan, was a quintessentially New York show that contributed a succession of signature phrases and oddball story lines to American popular culture. Everything from Kramer's manic body language to "Yada, yada, yada" to "master of your domain" became fodder for water cooler chat.

Others participating in the making of the DVD expressed disappointment that resentment over money had become a legacy of the show.

Peter Mehlman, a former "Seinfeld" writer, said: "There are so few people who get that chance to be on a show that has that kind of impact. They were so brilliant. We had so much fun while we were doing it. It's kind of sad that they have bad feelings about it."

Actors do not typically receive residual payments for DVD's, but this is quickly becoming a major issue in Hollywood, as DVD sales now bring in millions of dollars to those who control the rights to hit television shows and movies, far more than revenue from videocassettes.

Mr. Richards said: "I innocently asked a question. Is there some compensation? I don't believe there is. There isn't anything."

He added, "I think everyone wants to get paid," referring to his co-stars. "Is it honorable for those on the inside to make compensation? That's an ethical question they have to deal with. But I never heard back from anybody."

Mr. Seinfeld and Mr. Richards spoke together yesterday to mend fences. A spokeswoman for Mr. Seinfeld said: "Jerry and the other producers are profit participants of the `Seinfeld' show and do not control the ancillary stream of revenue. The owner is Warner Brothers, and Sony controls the syndication rights, which includes DVD sales."

Ms. Louis-Dreyfus and Mr. Alexander could not be reached for comment, their representatives said.

Mr. Richards said that he had spoken to Ms. Louis-Dreyfus on Monday and that she was noncommittal about taking part in the DVD.

To some degree the dispute may be about a lack of communication. Mr. Richards said he asked Mr. Seinfeld why he did not call when Mr. Seinfeld first heard that his co-stars had declined to take part in the DVD.

"I said, `Why didn't you call me?' " Mr. Richards said. "He said, `I should have.' "

The other three deserve compensation. I mean, it was Jerry's brainchild and it was Larry David's writing, but you can't shortchange the value of those three characters.

maximus, you can bet they won't release it all at once. Just releasing one season takes an inordinate amount of time, to do commentaries, featurettes, remastering, etc. Plus, by doing a season a year, they can keep the franchise at the forefront for years to come.

I watch Seinfeld reruns on a pretty regular basis, and it's easily my favorite show I have ever seen.

That being said, I was wondering if anyone has heard any new information about the Seinfeld DVD(s), and if they are still in the process of being made?

Also, have you heard anything about a potential release date for the first of the releases?

TBS has the "Best of Seinfeld" in prime-time on Wednesdays.

however, I would still purchase a Seinfeld DVD (excellent Christmas gift idea!)... but only if Kramer, Elaine & George participate in recording the extras; interviews, commentaries, etc.

I have watched 4 or 5 episodes of the show over the years and and am definitely not planning on buying the DVDs anytime soon. I would much rather stick with the Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly, or the Amos n' Andy radio shows and a host of others. Television in general is lacking as an entertainment medium in my opinion.

Well...I'm a Seinfeld fan but not big enough to own the whole series. I don't have unlimited DVD cabinet space so Ican't fill it up with TV series. I already have 24 and some of Buffy but I think I'm done with the TV series.

The whole "Episodes on DVDs" thing pisses me off.

That goddamn Friends show already has the LAST season out on DVD, while Seinfeld hasn't had a damn thing.

They even delay HBO's Oz, which is a damn GOOD show, way better than Friends, and on par with The Sopranos. Why are they only on Season 3 while The Sopranos has 4 seasons out? On top of that, they're only releasing one season per year for Oz. That's some bullshit right there.

They have all these crappy ass shows being released left and right on DVD when all the ones that are BETTER than them get nothing! That's ridiculous.

it's not rediculous. It's called rights management.

Some actors are what stand in the way, sometimes it's the distribution company, sometimes it's the production company, sometimes it's the broadcast company.

It's not arbitrary, it's about $$$ and if any of the above find it profitable.

I met up with Brendon Small from Home Movies not too long ago and he wants to put his stuff on DVD, but the company that owns the rights to distribution doesn't think it's profitable, so it's not being done.

Those three were virtually unknown before Seinfeld, and - in addition to a great salary for most of the years - were given $1M per episode the final season - that's $22M for a half-year's "work." . I can understand being reimbursed for your work, but c'mon - how about a reality check here? Producing is a gamble - if your show is a hit, you become obscenely rich; but if it's a flop, you lose your house and your life's savings. Bigger risk - bigger reward, IMHO - the producers deserve the money.

Or - as someone else said - just put the damn episodes on a DVD and screw the interviews!

I went and saw Jerry about 3 months ago and he said that since Seinfeld is already on about 10 times a day, we really don't need it on DVD. He said he is working on a new movie for next year but it's animated like Shrek.

I'm a huge fan of Seinfeld. Definately my favorite show of all time. I've never bought a TV DVD set, but I would love to see the commentaries, interviews and deleted scenes.
I haven't decided if I'm going to buy the DVD set, because if I buy the first three seasons, then I've pretty much guarunteed that I'll have to buy the subsequent sets. I'd love to own all of the episodes, but when its all said and done, thats a lot of money.

I wish there was a chance to buy just season 2. Season one was not that good at all. It was painful watching the firse season. But as later episodes come out, I will be buying. I just wonder what took them so long.

I really like the idea of all the extras I'm hearing about: outtakes, documentary, commentaries, etc. 12 hours' worth on Seasons 1-3, all told, IIRC.

Definitely worth having them uncut and w/o commercials.

I can understand being reimbursed for your work, but c'mon - how about a reality check here? Producing is a gamble - if your show is a hit, you become obscenely rich; but if it's a flop, you lose your house and your life's savings. Bigger risk - bigger reward, IMHO - the producers deserve the money. lt1tech Upright	I went and saw Jerry about 3 months ago and he said that since Seinfeld is already on about 10 times a day, we really don't need it on DVD. He said he is working on a new movie for next year but it's animated like Shrek.

lpj8 Crazy Location: U.S.A	I'm a huge fan of Seinfeld. Definately my favorite show of all time. I've never bought a TV DVD set, but I would love to see the commentaries, interviews and deleted scenes. I haven't decided if I'm going to buy the DVD set, because if I buy the first three seasons, then I've pretty much guarunteed that I'll have to buy the subsequent sets. I'd love to own all of the episodes, but when its all said and done, thats a lot of money.

abscondo Tilted Location: MI	I really like the idea of all the extras I'm hearing about: outtakes, documentary, commentaries, etc. 12 hours' worth on Seasons 1-3, all told, IIRC. Definitely worth having them uncut and w/o commercials. __________________ Ceci n'est pas une pipe.
