Much-needed poll. Best Kevin Smith movie.

Ok so here's the deal. There's already another thread on the movies themselves, but it's more generic. What I'm looking for here is your absolute FAVORITE, and WHY. Not so much a discussion on all of them, but why you particularly picked the one you did as your fave. Let the polling commence.

A quick recap, in case you're unfamiliar or forgot:

Clerks - Black & white reality of Randall and Dante, two... um... clerks... and their dirty dealings with life.

Mallrats - Two men find themselves on the outs with their steady girlfriends- one a total slacker, the other a victim of a dickhole father.

Chasing Amy - Man meets woman. Man likes woman. Woman LIKES WOMEN. Man is made fun of for liking lesbian. Man gets lesbian... er- the bisexual girl formerly known as "high school slut". Add slightly homophobic male friend, mix thoroughly: serves ALL.

DOGMA - An ordinary woman discovers her family roots are anything but. Catholics cringe as Catholicism is attacked and twisted for comedic value. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are angels with an agenda, but can Jay and Silent Bob help save the day before all existence is destroyed?

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - You need to see the other 4 first. Really. The stoner duo has to save their bad reputation caused by a comic book turned into a horrible movie. Lots of old characters are brought back to help them along the way, and there are lesbian jewel thieves. Who wear skin-tight latex body suits. And in the deleted scenes, they kiss and make out and hold each other... *drool* sorry.

I have to say Dogma is my favorite, it seems to me to be the one with the most in-depth, intelligent kind of humor. (but, that's not to say they don't each have their own intelligent parts and philosophical insight). while i appreciate the raunchy stuff in all of the movies, i especially like the intellectual humor of this one. and plus, alan rickman as the voice of god? how cool is that?

Yeah, It's gotta be Dogma for me as well, for all of the reasons above.
Love all of his movies though!

Kostya 11-23-2003 06:43 AM

I have to say that my favourite and surely the BEST film by Kevin Smith was Clerks. All the rest have been attempts to recapture the freshness and comedy which have fallen short to varying degrees.

I thought Dogma was a good movie, but by far nowhere near as original or resonating as Clerks.

But that's just one man's opinion.

hu-man 11-23-2003 08:45 AM

Definetely Clerks for me. Most of the other movies were just stupid, Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back was the dumbest and worst of them all though.
Dogma comes second, then Chasing Amy, then Mallrats.

maximusveritas 11-23-2003 08:50 AM

Clerks is the only Kevin Smith movie I really like.
Dogma and Chasing Amy may have "intelligent" dialogue, but when the words are coming from the likes of Ben Affleck, they just don't ring true with me for some reason.

im2smrt4u 11-23-2003 10:40 AM

Dogma without a doubt. It is just serious enough to make all the satire very funny.

Rubyee 11-23-2003 10:47 AM

Mallrats was my absolute favorite. It was the first movie that I watched all of. I wasn't a big fan of Clerks, and I couldn't stand Chasing Amy because Jennifer Tilly annoys me. I know she is in Mallrats, but not as much. Dogma was a close second, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was just stupid.

anti fishstick 11-23-2003 10:56 AM

i didn't really understand dogma. i guess i'm not intelligent. :D i think i'd have a better understanding of dogma if i had a better understanding of christianity though, because i don't.

i voted for clerks altho mallrats comes in a very close second (my best friend and i can totally relate to the two main characters, especially their food court discussion). clerks was the first kevin smith movie i ever saw so it left a big impression on me.

mattevil 11-23-2003 11:07 AM

liked mallrats the best but as far as good filmmaking i'd say chasing amy is his best film.

juanvaldes 11-23-2003 01:53 PM

Clerks without a doubt. Golden comedy, great dialog that played well together and it setup all sorts of great running jokes in the later movies.

Speed_Gibson 11-23-2003 02:03 PM

have to go with Clerks and Mallrats would be a close second. My knowlege of the Catholic faith and doctrines is a bit weak, so I definitely missed some of those jokes as they were intended.

bundy 11-23-2003 02:23 PM

iŽm going to say Dogma.
whoŽd have thought... Alanis is god...

Bloodslick 11-23-2003 02:25 PM

Clerks is my favorite because it was very funny and also became a very funny (and very short-run) cartoon.

Dogma is probably my second favorite because I love all of the religious jokes. I got them all, and I wasn't even raised Catholic.

pocon1 11-23-2003 05:05 PM

While Clerks was a great original movie and a fantastic start to a first-time filmmaker, I felt each movie got slightly better with the exception of Jay and Silent Bob (not that this was a bad movie). Dogma had a great list of people and the whole religion angle was a lot of fun. I think Kevin Smith's filmaking matured and Dogma has been his peak so far. Let's see what he did with J-Lo and Ben Affleck in their not-Gigli movie.

SabrinaFair 11-23-2003 05:42 PM

Dogma...
Makes you laugh *and* think about a very interesting topic...religion.

Baldrick 11-23-2003 05:43 PM

Probably Chasing Amy, simply because that really proved that Kevin Smith wasn't JUST dick and fart jokes.

Funniest Kevin Smith movie for me was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back though. While probably the weakest of his films, I laughed my ass off from beginning to end!

Cycler 11-23-2003 09:00 PM

Gotta be Mallrats. Characters, setting, everything was just great.

Chingal0 11-23-2003 09:28 PM

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Just cause noone else has picked it. It is, however, a funny fucking movie. Maybe that is just because I cuss as much as Jay does. Well what teh fuck ever, its a fucking good movie. Dogma, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Clerks. In that fucking order. Shit.

taliendo 11-23-2003 09:37 PM

Chasing Amy is my favorite Kevin Smith film, although I think that Clerks is a better film.

How can you do better than the scene in the car? "...even if we never talk again after tonight, please know that I'm forever changed because of who you are and what you've meant to me, which - while I do appreciate it - I'd never need a painting of birds bought at a diner to remind me of." or the filming in "blue dialogue?"

OK, OK, I'm just sappy, but I do love this film.

MuadDib 11-23-2003 09:51 PM

Chasing Amy by far! This movie is what really started to move Smith in a serious direction and allowed stuff like Dogma to happen. I really think he shined as a writer and director in this one and proved he wasn't a one trick act.

Jadey 11-23-2003 11:27 PM

Oh, it's Dogma for sure. When I first saw it I kept thinking, "damn, if I made movies this would be what I'd want to do."

Gotta agree with you on both counts...really tough to choose though!!!

HugAPug 11-24-2003 04:27 AM

Dogma. Because of the humour and the writing and everthing else mentioned above.

But also because I was raised Catholic, it had an extra layer of...coolness. Something my non-Catholic friends didn't really get. I actually watched Dogma with my devout Catholic mother and I caught her trying to cover up a laugh or two. Excellent film.

rogue49 11-24-2003 05:25 AM

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

A nice capper on the whole shebang.
Loved all the cameos, and the twisted sense of humor.
And you've got to love the whole Star Wars tribute.

Puts a smile on my face. :D

Xiangsu 11-24-2003 06:09 AM

I don't want to pick a favorite, I love them all so much. With that said though, I would have to pick Dogma.

sixate 11-24-2003 09:50 AM

I really wish I could vote for one, but I can't.
I think all of those movies were terrible.
I don't understand why people like his movies.

Stare At The Sun 11-24-2003 11:39 AM

Chasing amy-

Because all the other movies are "FIGMENTS OF YOUR FUCKING IMAGINATION"

t3m3st 11-24-2003 09:53 PM

well, I am Brodie, so I voted for Mallrats.
I was surprised to see Dogma in the lead.
while it is ho-fucking-larious, I thought it was a bit over-hyped.
But yeah, Kevin Smith is one of my heroes...

DonnieBoy 11-26-2003 09:38 PM

Damn,

Straight out tie for me between Jay and Silent Bob and Dogma...

I voted for J&B just for shits and giggles though

The opening segment with their moms and then the fade to them is the best part of all 4 movies...

I love how morbid Bennifer and Matt Damon are as the Angels and Carlin as a Cardinal HAR DE HAR HAR

and Phantoms like a mother fucker bro!

DB

Xiangsu 11-27-2003 05:17 AM

I thought about it a little bit more and I think I want to change my vote. I voted for Dogma originally but I want to change it to Mallrats. Because when you think about it the best characters Kevin Smith has ever written have been Jay, Silent Bob, and Brody. So when you have a movie with all three of them in it for an extended amount of time, unlike Jay and Silent Bob Strike back, you have the best Kevin Smith movie.

holtmate 11-29-2003 06:19 PM

I cannot decide. It's a tie between Clerks and Mallrats. Both movies are hilarious, and I can relate to those two the most.

Distraction 11-30-2003 06:32 PM

Mallrats hands down.

"Fly fatass, fly!"

BigBlueWrecking 12-01-2003 08:04 AM

I love Dogma. I am Catholic, and it just cracks me up everytime I watch it. It requires a little more knowledge than any of the other movies, but that is what makes it hilarious.

oberon 12-01-2003 09:40 AM

Dogma is really great... I agree that it does a good job providing laughs and makes you think about religion.

I haven't seen Clerks/Mallrats and barely remember the other two.

sixate seems to be a cynic (in addition to a devout atheist). ;)

hawkeye 12-01-2003 06:40 PM

(I haven't seen chasing amy yet)

I had to vote for J&SB:SB because of three things. the carrie fischer bit, the mark hamil bit, and the mystery machine bit. I loved all of the other ones, but those scenes, esp, the scooby gang one make this one the best to me.

Xiangsu 12-01-2003 07:10 PM

For those who own the dvd for J&SB:SB I have to say: Scooby Nights ;)

*shudders* Now that was just down right icky! ;)

Evil Milkman 12-01-2003 08:32 PM

I thought J&SB:SB was hilarious!

chingador 12-10-2003 10:10 PM

All of his movies are so quotable. I think that's why stuff like Clerks still has a lasting appeal - for being a 10 year old black and white film.
