Cult Classics
 

I adore cheesy movies! Does anyone else like cult classics? Some favorites of mine, although some need some type of distraction, choose yours, to watch, are:
Plan 9 From Outer Space--Ed Wood
Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death
American Gothic-- it's just so bad
Living in Oblivion
can't think of more c.c. names now,
but other favorites are
Waking Life
The Fisher King
Patch Adams
Monster's Inc
Blair Witch Project, when everybody thought it was a "documentary"- or was that just me?

are films that have attained cult status amongst my friends.

Ferris Bueller, Empire Records, Mallrats, the Breakfast Club, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, all Rockys, Audition, Jeanne et le garçon formidable, Les Misérables, Astérix & Obélix, Amelie, Le Libertin, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Lantana, the Castle and are just a few more.

although Kill Bill has only been out a little while... thats definitely a Cult Classic already.

What makes a movie a Cult Classic? Some of movies that been mention are pretty popular. I always thought a Cult Classic is an movie that is release and doesn't gain much attention, but on video word of mouth gets out.

I'm as confused as Psivage. I wasn't aware that half of those movies were considered "cult classics". Apparently, cult classics are nearly the only films I enjoy.

I've heard of but never seen Cannibal Women in the Avacado Jungle of Death, ditto Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell and Surf Nazis Must Die. Troma just has the best titles ever.

Another one that I'd like to see at some point is "Night of the Blood Llama" if only for the line "Does everything from Texas spit toxic cud?"

Not sure if "They Call Me Trinity" and "Trinity is Still My Name" count for cult, but, if they do, they're up there. "The Advenures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eight Dimension" is almost certainly cult, and that's a great one. "It's Big Boo-Tay! Big Boo-Tay!"

Rocky Horror probably counts as does Army of Darkness.

Donnie Darko might count if it is merely a matter of lack of initial popularity, but I was under the impression that most cult flicks aren't good because they're good stories, but because they're so bad that they're funny. Ed Wood's opus is the benchmark. If that's the case, then Donnie Darko is not in that category.

Let me make it perfectly clear that no John Hughes movie is a cult classic, and no movie that tries to be a John Hughes movie is a cult classic. If it's largely about teens or tweens acting adorably angsty, then it ain't cult. Think less John Hughs and more John Waters, less Rob Lowe, more Divine.

Conan the Republican was never in a cult movie, nor was Sly Stallone. Try Roddy Piper. Another one I haven't seen, but I've heard good things about: They Live.

They Live should definitely be on the list.

How about Fight Club? If that isn't a cult classic I dont know what is.

I dunno... Sixteen Candles is pretty cult-y. And a personal favorite cult flick is The Villain, featuring Ah-nuld, Ann-Margret, and Kirk Douglas. It was a comedy western, about Douglas trying a bunch of Wile E. Coyote type-tricks (like painting a tunnel on a cliff-face) to kidnap Ann-Marget. She kisses him at the end and he hops around like Daffy Duck. :D

They Live is a great movie... there's a scene in the middle where Roddy Piper and Keith David beat the shit out of each other for fifteen minutes, over David's refusal to wear alien-spotting sunglasses. Utterly hilarious, because every time you think they've had enough, they start up again.

Surf Nazis is a movie you're better off reading about than actually spending money on. :D I fell in love with the title, and ended up disappointed. Much better movies from Troma include Sgt. Kabukiman- NYPD, Nuke 'Em High, and Terror Firmer (features Ron Jeremy, as a mangled incestuous child molester. In a cage, in his son's apartment. ).

Slackers and Office Space I suppose could count, eh?

I'd say the Jersey Trilogy and the Mel Brooks' movies rank up there.

I agree with Tophat665's definition of the cult classics. No Kevin Smith movie is a cult classic. Ed Wood's movies, on the other hand, are definately cult classics. Troma movies (probably with the exception of Cannibal! The Musical) are cult classics.

I'd say any movie with a fan base larger than Rocky Horror Picture Show shouldn't be counted as one. That's probably as big as cult fan bases get.

I really was tired yesterday, a lot of the movies mentioned are freaking great! I watch office space on a weekly basis.

To me, Rocky Horror Picture Show will always be the DEFINITIVE cult classic.

ok i agree with a lot of the movies, american psycho, lock stock, etc etc, but now that i'm clear this thread is full of weirdos like me who like unheard of movies...not that the ones i just named are in any way unheard of...anyway i don't mean to offend with the name, but has anyone heard of "Gay Niggers from Outer Space"? a friend of mine told me about it, and it has a freakin entry on imdb, but like...there's some stuff on it online...but i want to hear about it from someone who's seen it. from what i gather it's a comedy...
again, sorry to offend if i did.

A lot of the movies listed on here arent even cult classics :p

By the way, the Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead are the ultimate cult classics :)...oh and Clockwork Orange too!

I love Adventures of Baron Munchausen. I haven't seen it in years, but I always thought it was great. I need to rent that, but I wish I could rent the dvd:( .

A group of my friends of one of my friends watches really bad B movies all the time. I started going after they had been doing it for quite some time. Death Row Dinner is the worst movie we watched while I was doing, but they seemed to like a few...
Meet the Feebles is one they always talked about.

Man, I hate that movie. I talked about it in one of the three or so LOTR threads going right now.

i forgot about boondock saints! a friend of mine showed it to me when it just came out, he's a film student so he finds weird shit like that...anyway it was awesome and soon all of our friends got wind of it so i never really thought of it as cult...but i guess you're right though, good call.
