I gave it three and a half thumbs up. Excellent acting and scenery.

I saw this movie today, it was wonderful. I loved it.

For those of you that have seen it, I have a question (SPOILER):

I don't understand the scene with the ninjas... why did they try to kill Katsumoto? and who sent them?

Spoiler:
Hopefully I'm not wrong, but I believe it was the Japanese railroad owner who sent them

It was a very good movie, too.

Best movie I've seen in a long time, although the film should have ended with the soldiers bowing to Katsumoto on the battlefield, and Nathan dying by his side.

Not the silly hollywood ending they put instead.

Could anyone explain why Tom Cruise could fight off mulitple ninjas after only a few months of training? These were TRAINED KILLERS.

So was he- remember the initial battle, he must have killed 5-6 samurai without the use of his pistol...

Its not like he was just some random guy, he was a soldier, he had fight training, and it was mostly instinct. If you noticed he looked freaked out through the whole thing like he didnt even think he could do what he was doing.

Oh and Jesus Pimp, I thought Tom Cruise would be shitty too, but i believe he played the part perfect.

Yeah but a civil war soldier? C'mon. They weren't they greatest of fighters. In hand to hand combat they would get owned by Samurais.

Maybe, maybe not. Officers at the time were trained in the use of sword and more advanced hand to hand techniques then most of the infantry. It is conceivable.

This needs to be bumped up. Best movie I have seen this year easily, shit, best i've seen in a long time. It was like, BRAVEHEART good. Highly reccommended to anyone. And anyone that has doubts about Tom Cruise will be shut up after this movie. Not only did he speak japanese, but he did all his stunts and portrayed the part he played better than anyone I could think of. So go away haters! =)

Wow, bringing back a thread almost a whole year later. I saw it a while ago so i dont really remember, but i remember that is pissed me off for some reason. I think it was that guy that played the general of the army, cuz he didnt do shit, and kept ordering canons and stuff the kill the samurai who were trying to keep there honor by fighting even though they lost. I wished thay would of killed him. Anyway, i guess i kinda like the movie, i little unbelievable, but overall ok.

Well, the movie was based off of a book, which was based on a true story.

Damn those true stories and their justifications. Well, it's only based on a book which was based on a true story, which means it may only contain 1% of what really happened. Anyways, I had to get that out of my system because that's what always seems to happen in Hollywood movies.

I took it that he was an indian soldier. References to Custer and the indian wars were in his mightmares. A Captain in the Calvary with many years of hand to hand fighting with the indians (a captain in that era may have also had military training in the use of swords and in hand to hand combat).

Edit to add:

I thought this was Tom's best film. I may actually purchase it for viewing next summer in my camper on a long road on a rainy day in the Alaska bush.
