WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE... the movie?!!?!!

When I was a little kid no matter what would happen during the day I would somehow manage to find time to read or look at WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE by Maurice Sendak.

To me this children's book was what let me develop my imagination into what it is today, Max was able to conjure up a world of his own from his thoughts, like Max I too have done so through my personal novels and drawings and sculptures. Sendak's book to me is the key to my imagination and to this day no other book can ever better in my personal opinion.

So it gives me great grief to hear this news:

Spike Jonze Knows Where the Wild Things Are Source: Variety Tuesday, October 28, 2003

Universal has hired Spike Jonze to direct the Playtone-produced adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, the classic children's book by Maurice Sendak. Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce with John Carls and Sendak.

The Adaptation and Being John Malkovich director will helm the live-action film, which was originally developed as a CGI project.

Published in 1963, it's the story about a mischievous boy who is sent to bed without supper. In his room, Max uses his imagination to conjure up a forest populated by the wild things, exotic monsters who embrace Max as their ruler.
I don't mind book to movie adaptations (as long as they turn out well ala LOTR) but this book can't be turned into a film, not without raping the book and rape it they will.

Fuck you Hollywood, stop cashing in and start trying to make good films for the sake of making good films.

as for Where the Wild Things Are ... great book and well, that has got to be the most memorable book cover ever.

When will Hollywood start making up some original ideas for movies instead of turning every book on the planet into a movie? I almost hope they do a horrible job and the film makes no money so they won't have the desire to do this kind of thing again...

You dont have to see the movie.

I love what William Burroughs said when asked if he liked what they did to his book Naked Lunch. He said, they did nothing to my book, its right there on my shelf.

I'm really not happy about Hollywood raping my childhood like this. That was the first book I learned to read.

sh-it. this sucks, massively. what's next, a live action "Horton Hears a Who" - only changed, to reflect society today - "Horton hires a ho"?

I've seen this thread sitting here the past few days, but I was too afraid of what might be lurking inside. Sadly my fears were acknowledged when I finally mustered up the courage to read it.

Arrrggghhh!

I've never read this book.
Would I like it as a grown-up?

As a grown-up you might find it too short but it's still an amazing book, one I cherish to this day and always find fulfilling with every read.

Original ideas? Hollywood? Nah. It just isn't possible anymore. They don't want to go through the work of writing up something new and different, so they simply decide to ANALY RAPE EVERYTHING. I want to go over to the guy who thought up this brilliant (sarcasm) idea, and blow his head open with a large shotgun (not sarcasm).

hmmm.... i dont really think it will be that good... hollywoods creativity is definently lacking of late... and live action... i dont know about that... i dont see it...

but at least Sendak (the author) is being involved...

Thanks, Mr.D.
This will need to go on my nephews' Santa wishlist. (don't tell him I pre-read it.)

Oh yeah, it is appropriate for 4yr. olds, right?

Besides, the movie can't compare to Wild Things, well, three minutes of it anyway.

The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

I'm just wondering how they're going to turn a 20 page kids book with all of 5 sentences of actual dialogue into an hour long (or more) movie.

Well, did you ever read Shrek? It's about the same length. Essentially, there is no correlation between the two, except for the main character. Expect a different story with Max and a couple monsters.
