If you can get past its artsyness and the camera work (which is good, but not compatible with human equilibriums) then you have to contend with some pretty stark footage of some really gruesome acts. Was good, if you can withstand it.

This might be a decent movie, I don't know. Why don't I know? Because who ever did the fucking sound editing decided explosions and crowd noise were much more important then little things like dialog. I'm sick of moves where when something blows up the concrete walls of my house shake, yet when someone's speaking I can't understand a word. And yes I tried every 'sound" setting on my system. I'd say about 20% of the movies I watch any more are like this.

Tully, do you have a 5.1 system without a center speaker? I had that problem and my solution was to split the sound between my TV and the stereo system.

No, I have a center. Tried it with/without, sub, center...nothing worked. I tried this movie in so many different settings. Up this level cut that, either hear the dialog and get blown out of the room when the crowds yells or don't hear what's being said. I finally said screw it and watched it with my laptop speaker system, still sucked... just not as much.

I'm serious this seems to happen about 20% anymore. I'm all for movies where shit blows up, I'd just like to hear what people in the movie have to say about it. Maybe I should try my headphones? They work on planes?

Tully that does sound like a center speaker problem. Try turning that one up manually and the rest down.

Also if you have individual speakers (ie. they didn't come in a set), try upgrading the center channel so its more dominant.

I tried turning the center up and rest down.

Maybe I need to purchase some that don't say Samsung on them? (Gawd, like I really need to bleed any more cash.)

I must say most movies sound fine, just about one out of five really suck.

A Mighty Heart 8/10

The story of the investigation into the kidnapping and eventual murder of WSJ reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan. This was a very respectful and non-exploitative rendering of an act of totally meaningless brutality. It was heartening to see how hard the US and Pakistani officials worked together to find him and heartbreaking to see how his death devastated them all - most especially, of course, his pregnant wife played pretty convincingly by Angelina Jolie. I have no criticism of her performance...she played it very safe, understated, which I think was a wise way to approach it. But the scene in which they tell her he is dead is agonizing. I can barely conceive of what that would be like.

I did read an article written by Daniel Pearl's personal assistant who wasn't happy with either Pearl's or her own portrayal in the movie. And I understand why...both characters are very vaguely drawn. Her complaint was that Daniel Pearl was portrayed as kind of bland and gullible and I can't disagree with that. He kind of was portrayed that way.

But overall it's a good film that tells a very compelling story.

Iron Man - 4/5

Holy crap! I'm trying to remember the last time a Marvel movie didn't suck, and IM kicks ass. It isn't the best superhero movie of all time but it ranks near the top of the bunch. Good pacing, excellent effects, good story, and I had a hell of a good time!
Oh and be sure to stick around after the credits, especially if you are a comic book fan.

Holy crap stay away from this if you like any quality at all.

Now having put that aside, if you like B movies and don't mind devoting like 4 hours (thats how long this seemed) to a movie then I recommend this. It has ninjas, terrible acting, hot girls, shitty villain, really bad character names... I could go on forever. If you want a good laugh when you really should not be laughing then check it out... only try not to pay any money for it

Juno - 6/10

Mediocre movie. Everyone seemed to think that this was such a great movie, but I found it to be very dry. I laughed during very few parts, and didn't think too much during the movie either. I don't really recommend this one to anyone. it gets a 6 for not being terrible, but not being great either

Sweeney Tod - 2/10

Okay I fell asleep half way through this. But the audio was so fucked up on this I could not even enjoy it. I have 5.1 surround sound that is set up properly, just finished watching juno and then put this in. The music so so fucking loud and the voice so quiet I had to put subtitles on to even see what going on. That ruined the entire movie for me, and possibly put me to sleep as well.
I also figured it might just be the speakers so I even turned them off and simply used the TV speakers, but that just made it sound worse.
Anyone else have this problem?

Iron Man - Easily a 9/10, if not a 10/10. My first impressions are without a doubt 10/10, but I have been out of touch with movies for many months, so it is quite possible my standards have fallen.

I think i was trying too hard to enjoy this movie. I will have to rewatch it when it gets to dvd. Overall this was an excellent movie especially for a marvel movie. And the ending AFTER the movie credits really made me happy!!! Now I know they have to make previews for people to see the movies but PLEASE STOP PUTTING ALLLLL THE POSSIBLE COOL SCENES IN YOUR PREVIEWS! I knew every part before they happened so it really bugged me.

And: this is a fucking super-hero movie! he's gonna kick some ass and some people will die. that is why there's a PG13 rating. you're under 13? then get the fuck out of the cinema!! I had little kids all around me at an 8pm viewing and they asked questions to their parents at every scenes. "who's that? " why is he there" ... anyways, that ruinned part of the experience for me.

so overall, if you like the iron man, Ultimate avengers, or marvel universe or you like superhero movies or you just want to see a good well made movie, then check this one out!

My rating for 1st viewing is 8.5/10

I saw Ironman last night as well.

I'd go 6.5/10 on this movie.

I think for me, and I've had this happen with other movies, so many people told me what a great movie this was I built it up to a point where my expectations were simply too high.

I may watch it again when it hits DVD's. Maybe I'll see it in a different light.

Run, Fatboy, Run - Special/5

I say special because it stars Simon Pegg (from Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) and Hank Azaria. They are both fucking hilarious. Simon Pegg could make anything funny for me. So basically if I were to rate it without taking them into account I would probably be a 2/5. Standard rom-com fare. But dammit they really do make the movie better. So I'll up it to 3.5 out of 5.

Otoshiana (Pitfall), a Teshigahara movie from 1962.

A number wouldn't make any sense.

This one mixes in some footage from Teshigahara's coal mining documentary. Lovely Ford-type panoramas of coal mining wastelands. (This is quite a contrast to Teshigahara's next film, which unfolds in a hole in the ground.) Wacko plot that hinges on ghosts, doppelgangers, and a 2nd union. It's also quite violent: all but a couple of the main characters are killed, and the 2 that live on are a bit wierd. The Takemitsu Toru score is very minimal.

Not a feel good movie, but i liked it. What's more, i liked it better than the Ozu movie (Higanbana -- Equinox flower) i saw last week.

It gets 2 because the first hour or so was actually really good. The final act ruins the movie for me though. Really why couldn't they adapt the ending from the book instead of the generic Hollywood ending?

Yes, I did see the alternate ending too, it was just less bad.

Fido (2006) - A witty take on what happens after the zombie attacks are finished with. Zombies become common servants of man-kind, but only with the help of ZomCom's control collar. Tale about the troubles an unpopular young lad has as he befriends his parent's new house-zombie. I thought it was kind of clever, bizarre, and funny in most parts. 3/5

Speed Racer - 8/10, and no that is not a typo.

I honestly feel bad for the Wachowskis. As much as their last two movies pissed me off (no, V for Vendetta doesn't count), this really made my nostalgia meter go off, plus it was the first time in my life that Spritle and Chim-Chim didn't piss me off. Plus, it was the first successful date for the Mormon and me (the last two ended in debate), so I'm just a Cheerful Charlie right now. Warner Bros. should feel ashamed for fudging the flick's chance at box office success by releasing it as a summer movie.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly directed by Julian Schnabel. 8/10.
An interesting movie about the former editor of Elle Magazine Europe, Jean-Dominique Bauby (based on his book). He has a stroke and becomes paralyzed everywhere except his left eye ("locked-in syndrome"). The first 10 minutes or so were especially compelling. They were shot entirely from his perspective after waking up from a coma.

Without the product placement, This movie would seem like it's really about how sick we are viewing the worst crap on the internet disregarding that it's a real person getting hurt on that video. With the product placements, I can't help but think this is a propaganda film about file sharing and how just trading 1 song or movie is contributing the destruction of movie studios... meh.. I'm a really big fan of Diane Lane though

It had good special effects but what I saw of it - not the whole film but definitely enough - gave me no motivation to watch from beginning to end.

it did make me curious enough to want to read the actual book rather than watch what was likely a f**ked up watered down interpretation for the masses though. I always prefer to form my own opinions about things.

December Boys: 6/10

Summary (by imdb.com): In the late 1960's, four close-knit orphans in Australia, called the December Boys because they were all born in the same month, leave their orphanage for a holiday by the sea. Having all but given up hope of ever being adopted, the friends are on a seaside holiday one summer when they hear a rumor that a seaside couple are looking to adopt one of the orphans, friendships are tested and new alliances made as the four boys compete for the chance to gain a real family.

Comment: If you are a fan of Daniel Radcliffe then you may like his performance in this film. I was disappointed in his acting because he appeared to act like a whiny emo kid trying to figure out how to survive in the world, similar to his acting in Harry Potter 1-4, but his skills improved in the fifth Harry Potter film. The story was a bit slow and the ending was rather depressing, but Daniel Radcliffe does get it on with one of the characters during his holiday near the sea, so I guess something good came out of the film.

I've seen a lot of movies lately, but they've been very shitty or mediocre. I'll list them so you know to avoid them or watch them if we have opposite taste in movies.

In A Dark Place - even the masterbation and lesbian scene couldn't help this one.
If... - If I were 18, I might have really enjoyed this one.
The Psychic - potential, but it was a 70s thriller. I wish I had foreseen how bad this one was.
Fantastic Planet - Fantastic in it's time, but I couldn't take it now and turned it off after 20 grueling minutes of "Is it going to get better anytime soon?...um...nope' *click*

Then, as I was about to give up on movies for awhile, I hit 2 good ones.

Volver: Directed by Almodovar which is always a good sign. I didn't think I would like it much, but it was really good. It was interesting to watch the family interacting. It was funny, sad, and disturbing. 9/10

Sleuth: Jude Law is in it so I was sold although I was expecting a mediocre film. I was drawn in immediately. Only 2 actors in one amazing house. The visuals were very intriguing. It was one of the best character studies I have seen in awhile. Usually pretentious, this one was not. It kept twisting around, but not in a bad way. I really, really enjoyed this one. I will probably watch it again tomorrow when JJ gets home. 10/10
