Nickeled and Dimed (book)
I saw a comment in another thread about this book...and well since I made one topic about it a book already I thought I'd topicize this one. I think this is another great book about how we all get along in this crazy world. I think its a very good inciteful book on how the world operates and how a lower paying job such as a restocker at Walmart can be just as hard on your body and mind as any other job out there.

After reading this book, I give much better tips to waitresses. However, I avoid Wal-Mart just as much as I did before, and I won't use a Merry Maids-type house cleaning service, also based on what I read.

I read this book, and would recommend it to anyone. Sometimes the author was annoying when she would constantly remind us of the posh life she left behind, it seemed a bit elitist, but how she left it all behind to rough it was still pretty admirable.
It really brought home the fact that these people are forced to work to the point of exhaustion to be able to pay for rent and maybe food, and their hard work is appreciated by no one. And I agree with redlemon, I will never use a cleaning service. Like how she was "rebelling" against her boss by accepting a glass of water is unbelievable. |

interesting stuff, yeah, just proves wal-mart is evil. My college made all us incoming freshman read it. While i like the point of the book, Ehrenreich annoys the hell out of me, she's an elitist, self-righteous snob who's almost insecurely prideful about her education and social status, and she needs to get over herself.

Like everyone said, it was a good book. We were required to read it upon entry to college (UNC). She made several good points, but like anleja said, it was a bit elitist in parts. Also, certain... *ahem*... chemical indiscretions on her part certainly didnt help her credibility.
I admire that she actually went all the way and didnt just do a half-ass job.
