Fight Club Author is GAY

Chuck Palahniuk just came out of the closet (yesterday actually). Turns out he has been living with a male partner for more than 10 years now.

You can read about at his official fan site: http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net

Normally, someone's being gay shouldn't be that interesting. But in this case it does kinda explain Fight Club, doesn't it? In a good way, I mean.

Astrocloud 09-25-2003 10:59 AM

GASP, You mean Tyler Durden is one of them? No wonder I like him.

sadatx 09-25-2003 11:07 AM

I had a film professor in college who was gay and loved Fight Club and would point out all the gay subtext in the movie (which was, I think, more prevalent in the book).

So, fairly or unfairly, I always took for granted that Palahniuk was gay. But I guess I never knew if he had said he was or not.

Astrocloud 09-25-2003 11:45 AM

Then again here is a quote from this weeks entertainment weekly (I know, I know, don't roll your eyes)
Quote:

Turnarounds are a gas, especially when you get your pals in on it. ''When reporters call my friends, my friends start lying: 'Ah, yeah. He lives in a castle! He's a heroin addict!' And so they tell these contradictory stories, so it's fun for them.'' When the press makes references to Palahniuk's wife, everyone has a big giggle. ''My lovely wife!'' he smiles. In fact, Palahniuk has no wife, and declines to discuss his personal life on the record, preferring to keep his fans guessing
So maybe he's not gay

Four Fingers 09-25-2003 11:58 AM

Yeah, that entertainment weekly article is the reason he came out. He said some nasty things about the female reporter that wrote that in his audio-blog, and then admitted that he had lived with a male partner for 11 years.

Dunno. Maybe it's another prank of his.

irseg 09-25-2003 11:59 AM

After seeing the movie, I always just kind of assumed.

Charlatan 09-25-2003 12:02 PM

After reading all of his books I've always thought he was either gay or closeted... In the end, I only care that he is one of the most exciting writers of our time...

Hey Harry-

Bebop chick here - just wanted to let you know that I just got back from Chuck Palahniuk's signing at Columbia University. He read the now-notorious short story "Guts", causing his head count of individuals who have fainted during the full stretch of his American tour to rise to 25. Uniquely, the second person to pass out this afternoon actually fell forward into his chair, and was brought down onto the floor. After he came to, he started screaming at the top of his lungs (sounded like he'd had the crap scared out of him). I promised Chuck I wouldn't disclose too much info, but just thought I'd let you know that his upcoming anthology will prove to be everything it's hyped to be and more than you can fucking imagine.

On the Spike Jonze note - yes, Chuck DEFINITELY has spoken enthusiastically with Spike about an "underground movie project" after he is finished with his book tour (if Spike has not found another author before then - which I couldn't contemplate a reason for). He also shared a couple of other stories of friends, and examples of tales even his incredibly liberal publishers decided to censor (thanks to my question, of course) . . . there were numerous other goodies, surprises, etc. . . but I can't divulge too much. Any more questions . . . ? In the words of Chuck, I need that "like I need teeth in my ass-hole".

Au revoir,

Bebop_chick

Spike Jonz gave us "Being John Malkovich" -This seems like an ideal pairing.

Four Fingers 09-25-2003 12:51 PM

I hated "Being John Malkovich"

Maybe you didn't "get it".

Mr.Deflok 09-25-2003 03:05 PM

BJM was groovy.

I don't care if he's gay, he writes an awesome novel and that's all that matters.

Captain_Murphy 09-25-2003 04:50 PM

Anyone else remember the Fight Club quote (movie, not book)

"We are a generation of men raised by women. I'm beginning to wonder if another woman is what we really need."

It seems like all my favorite authors are gay. First Clive Barker, now Chuck. Who's next, Tom Robbins?

Captain_Murphy 09-25-2003 04:52 PM

Also forgot to mention. I thought "Being John Malkovich" was crap. I guess I didn't get it either. Anyone care to tell me what I didn't get?

Ganguro 09-25-2003 05:05 PM

i got it, and yes.. it did indeed stink

Amen.

Xiangsu 09-25-2003 06:15 PM

He's my favorite author...but I'm straight...I love him...

Charlatan 09-26-2003 05:57 AM

Spike Jones and Chuck P... interesting pairing... Being John Malkovich is driven by many of the same impulses that are firing though the viens of Palahniuk's work...

If you have seen some of Jones' other works (like it or not) you have to agree that he is consistently interesting...

johnnymysto 09-26-2003 05:59 AM

Clive Barker's gay??? Whoa. I'll have to rewatch all his movies now. That is interesting...

Halx 09-26-2003 10:35 AM

I think the important thing to remember is this:

He was gay when he wrote all of his awesome shit.
Coming out of the closet wont change that fact.
It also wont have much of an affect on his future stuff.
He is the same person he always was and you appreciated him then.

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-26-2003 12:32 PM

I don't give a fuck if Chuck Palahniuk is gay or not. He's still an awesome writer, i mean he wrote choke and fight club, didn't he?

GSRIDER 09-26-2003 01:19 PM

Yup, chuck could fuck sheep while wearing pixie wings..... I'd still buy his books though.

Moobie 09-26-2003 01:33 PM

The big question is "When are they going to make another movie?" I want to see IM and Survivor on the big screen.

I wonder if any of Choke was personal experience..... hmmmmm...

I concur

bundy 09-26-2003 11:03 PM

what is the point of this thread?

a writer is gay... so?

btw, i loved Being John Malkovich. i thought it was very clever. i´m looking forward to seeing this combination.

almostaugust 09-27-2003 02:08 AM

I dont care if he's gay. Ive read a few of books and enjoyed them greatly. And, ive never picked up on the gay subtext people are talking about- though i can see where your coming from.

em1014 09-27-2003 06:35 AM

cool...at least he knows what he wants in life! This reminds me though.. I have to read Fight Club for one of my classes this semester.

BigGov 09-27-2003 06:52 AM

You got an amazing class if you have to read Fight Club.

Fight Club is a good book that is interesting and can be read in one night, it's the perfect book for any student.

World's King 09-27-2003 05:47 PM

Wow... He's Gay.

*goes back to stuff that matters*

Hrothgar 09-27-2003 06:26 PM

I preferred Adaptation over Being John Malkovich myself.

Chuck Palahniuk is an awesome writer regardless of sexual preference.

hilbert25 09-28-2003 02:11 AM

It was something I figured he had to have tried at some point or another. It doesn't matter though. What I do care about is that I can't get his books for less than $13 each.... grrrr...

So, it gives you a different perspective on the book. Well I guess only if you are into the whole biographical perspective of literary criticism.

RelaX 10-17-2003 02:10 PM

How DARE HE! The foul infidel!

Really... I don't care that much though, as long as he doesn't include gay erotic scenes in his new books.
Does give you kindof a new perspective on the relationship between the two guys in Choke. Living together and all.

Chingal0 10-17-2003 06:24 PM

Heh Halx hit it right on the head. As far as i am concerned, being gay shouldnt change anyones perceptions about you. Altho, there are people that disagree, I usually just fight them and lose and cry. Then they think im gay.

mattevil 10-17-2003 06:42 PM

who cares as long as he's talented. and of course clive barker is gay. look at hellraiser you've got all that fetish wear and channard has a dick on his head.

Did you read Lullaby?! Trust me, when you get to the end you will see a little bit of his homosexuallity showing through.

skyscan 10-17-2003 09:25 PM

*SARCASM*
Wait, he's gay? No way.
Next you are going to tell me Elton John and Ian McKellen are gay also. Nope I'm not going to believe it
*/SARCASM*

I think that just proves that it doesn't matter, what matters is how good you are at what you do.

Crazy/Beautiful 10-31-2003 12:47 PM

Who cares he's a great writer! Sexual preference doesn't change anything!

sic8 11-01-2003 10:26 AM

Yeah I loved both his and Clive Barker's books (his game wasn't too bad either!)
