Has a movie ever turned into a book?

It always happens the other way around and the book is always better, of course, although has this ever happened???

Jack Ruby 09-16-2003 04:07 AM

Yeah, of course. Most of them suck though.

rogue49 09-16-2003 04:27 AM

I think the screenplay of Star Wars was turned into one.
I've never read it though.

Pellaz 09-16-2003 09:50 AM

Yeah, lots of movies get turned into books, although the industry seems to finaly be cooling on that idea. Jack Ruby was right, they're usualy horrid excuses of 225 pages written by some hack, found mostly at the supermarket newsstand. The last one I can clearly recall seeing was Daredevil. The last one I can remember reading was Willow (which, incidently, spawned a trilogy a while back)

I remember buying and reading the "Men in Black" book when I was a younger and more niave little Spinach

....*shuddder*

They call them "novelizations". Anything that needs a lousy word like that needs desperate help.

Except, if I recall correctly, "2001: A Space Odyssey" is the exception.

It's a pretty standard part of the mechandising whirl and has been for ages. Heck, I have the book of Star Trek 3 that someone bought me when I was a kid. Book's a lot better than the film.

flamingdog 09-16-2003 11:11 AM

2001: A Space Odyssey is a bit of an exception as the novel and the movie were conceived roughly at the same time, both being based on the same Arthur C Clarke short story. Kubrick and Clarke actually worked together, I believe.

So the film isn't an adaptation of the novel and the novel isn't an adaptation of the film, they evolved in syncronicity.

So I recall anyway, correct me if I'm wrong.

The best novelisation I ever read was Dick Tracy. Lousy film, great book. Pulp, pulp, pulp.

Night of the Living Dead turned into a book after the movie, and it was a pretty cool book too.

The Abyss was a mive first as well.
They wrote the book to add extra details.

I read the novelizations to the two Star Wars prequels -okay, call me a big dork-and they actually helped some of the stupid scenes make sense, because the author could flesh out and explain the ideas Lucas had but with which he had difficulty putting on the screen. Explanations for things like, how did a little kid who crashed into the control ship blow the thing up by shooting two things out of his small ship into the hanger and how come when everyone else gets hit by a light saber their limb falls off, but when Count Dooku hits Obiwan, he just has a really bad cut, etc...

As an aside, Lucas, I think has some great ideas and creations, but I really wish he would leave the writing and directing to someone else. Sorry to go off on a tangent.

yeah tons of them, starwars all over the place. And almost anything that made money.

Nope, spot on!

wakelagger 09-17-2003 06:20 PM

you know its a novelization when it includes "Pictures From The Hit Summer Blockbuster!"
gah

MPower 09-18-2003 09:40 AM

At least they are better than when they turn a song into a movie.

Sleepyjack 09-18-2003 10:53 PM

@MPower
lol, like Britney Spears in Crossroads :p

FlorentinoAriza 09-19-2003 05:39 AM

I used to like the ET novelization, it even contained the scenes they never released ( with the principal , etc.. )

This actually was a pretty good book, course I was like 12 when I read it so not sure how much I would enjoy it 10 years later.

CapnWaffle 09-19-2003 09:11 AM

Hehe, yea, I remember back in my grade school days whenever there was a book sale, there's be one or two novelizations for sale, featuring "full color pictures from the movie!"

anleja 09-19-2003 03:44 PM

My wife has My Girl 2 in book form.

preluder 09-27-2003 11:58 PM

I've played a COMPUTER GAME that was turned into a book. But then again, the game was based on the riftwar series of books by Raymond E Feist... But that book, Krondor: the Betrayal really sucked... it read like a computer game.
