Hollywood is done.

Is it me, or is almost every movie that comes out these days a let-down? Everything is either a sequel to a bad movie, or a special effects laden pile of vomit......... The only good movie I saw was LOTR, The Two Towers, hated the first one. And don't get me started on Star Wars.......

I wouldn't say done, I'd like to think of it more as a slump. Hollywood has become far too dependent on the higher ups that are only concerned with breaking earning records or producing moves as fast as they can and as cheap as they can. Because of the sheer success of pure popcorn flicks, no one wants to take a chance; they merely want to reuse the popular star of the month in various situation.

Don't get me wrong, I love explosions as much as the next guy, but too much makes my head hurt.

My wife and I think that we are just getting too old. Even though we are only 30, we just can't see ourselves waiting in line to see these movies. I can't believe I now understand why my parents hated to take me to the movie theater.

I heard someone once say that Hollywood pumps out 400 movies a year hoping that at least 12 of them will be winners and pay for the rest of the fodder...the sacred 12

There are some great movies and some terrible ones, most likely our expectations of a "good" movie keeps getting reworked into something semi impossible to acheive. I try and expect nothing but to be entertained when I go to see a flick these days. (illustrating my fav. move types

City of God
FightClub
Bottel Rocket

The shit-to-gold ratio is way higher than it should be (and has been in the past), yeah. Too bad really. But there are still good ones. Some movies I've enjoyed from the past years are Fight Club, Ocean's Eleven, Road to Perdition, Lord of the Rings, Changing Lanes, etc.

The summer is always a weak season for movies (you get a lot of explosions though)

The other thing is that great movies tend to come in clumps like say 1999:
fight club
American beauty
the matrix
the Iron giant
being john malcovitch
the sixth sense
the green mile
toystory 2

The way I see it we are just getting around to paying of 1999 for movies. There will be another bumper crop eventually

i noticed the other day that they really are using to same actors over and over again, like that phonebooth dude is in every movie, or the spiderman guy, all of the place, well hes not as bad but still. I think that video piracy meets to get as big as mp3's. Then eventually they will have to put out good enough movies that people will go see instead of download.

If hollywood is going to die then it's going to move into videogames, I mean, damn, have you seen what they're acheiving these days in games? It's astounding.

There are still quite af ew good movies coming out every year it's just that the bad ones get far too much attention. Perhaps you should look into Film Fest stuff.

However to this day my favourite film is Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa, filmed more than 50 years ago.

It's funny you mention video games because the video game industry makes more than all of hollywood combined. John Carmack is a God btw.
