Clone TV Shows
Hi all.
The show "Pawn Stars" is fine. But the clones suck. To me all of the "Ghost," and "Bigfoot" shows suck. Everything on syfy, except Star Trek reruns, suck. What's wrong with this planet? Are people really getting so brain-dead?? Sincerely, Wyodiver.

So this thread is about shows which seem redundant? Like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures and Paranormal State and Ghost Hunters Academy (none of which has actually found a ghost, mind you)? Or Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition (or whatever it's called) and Biggest Loser? American Idol and The Voice?
Honestly, there do seem to be a lot of these recently, but if people watch them and they don't destroy society, I don't really have a problem with them. I don't watch any of them, so they don't really bug me. |

there seems to be an awful lot of shows that are built around the synergies of "How I Met Your Mother" lately. Which in itself seems to be a bit of a "Friends" clone. Oh yes, and how Friends kinda riffed on Seinfeld. Should we go all the way back to Three's Company?
Before the '70's though, I don't recall to many sitcoms that had friends cohabitating. It was primarily family unit oriented shows.

I personally don't agree that everything on Syfy sucks. I enjoy both "Sanctuary" and "Warehouse 13," although I will certainly grant you that both are something of guilty pleasures. And, when they were on, I loved "BSG" and "Caprica."

Meh, I don't have a problem with it. Everyone thinks they can put a new spin on an idea. You might like Pawn Stars but someone out there like Hardcore Pawn. I personally like Antiques Roadshow. It's been happening for years. Bewitched vs. Jeannie, Brady Bunch vs. Partridge Family... etc etc... There were only a couple of channels then and they all copied each others successes with their own programming.

I respect the above opinions. But the proliferation of "reality" shows, wrestling shows, direct clones of anything remotely innovative, bugs me. I pay a lot for cable TV. And I often wonder why.
The History Channel and Discovery Channel are both airing shows about ghosts, the search for Sasquatch, etc. I like history and science, yet it's getting harder and harder to find any shows about those topics. When there were only a few "reality" shows I didn't care. But now they are everywhere. I'd rather pull my own teeth out than watch "the jersey shore." USA is one of the few networks left that offer shows that I actually like. Just my 2 cents.

I might be able to relate with you more but I've had a DVR for so long that I never have to channel surf. It just filters out everything I'm not interested in. I'd also say there are a lot of channels that aren't full of reality shows. USA, FX, TNT, AMC and some others all have some quality original programming and I can't think of a single reality show on any of them.
My only problem is I never know what new shows are coming on or when shows I like are coming back on because I always skip commercials.
