Buying tickets for live events
I decided that I needed to go back to Broadway and see Rock of Ages again, since Dee Snider is performing the role of the bar owner. I found out a couple of interesting things about purchasing tickets, and perhaps some people have other hints that could help people out as well.
First, there are multiple sites that sell tickets to the same events, but the prices and fees can be very different, as well as the user experience. I started at broadway.com. The added fees were pretty high, and you could only select the general area of your tickets, you couldn't choose specific seats. I switched to ticketmaster.com, and was surprised that the fees were much lower, including the ability to print out the tickets right at home. Also, they displayed the individual available seats with a nice display. (For some reason, the site didn't behave well in either Chrome or Safari, but it worked in Firefox.) The other, even more important hint I found was: follow the show on Facebook. Be sure to check through the Facebook and Twitter feeds of whatever event you are trying to attend for coupon codes. I was able to get Orchestra seats (row K center) for nearly 50% off, and 25% less than the mid-Mezz seats that I had been considering on broadway.com. I know that I probably could have had an even better deal if I waited and got the tickets from TKTS, but I'm driving in from Connecticut and need to line up babysitting, so I can't risk TKTS. Any other tips for ticket buying?

Depending on where you are, there are often discount tickets available.
For example, in Chicago there is a site called hottix.org that lists tickets (generally for 50%) for shows that week. In your case it might not have been the best bet if you wanted to secure them early, but often times once a show opens if they sell tickets on the site they will continue to do so for the majority, if not all of the run. The tickets aren't always for every single performance of the show, but this is my go-to site if I want to have something down for the weekend or its Friday night at 6pm and I am looking for something to do. I've seen everything from Burlesque, The Blue Man Group, and Literary plays. Also, many venues offer rush tickets for day of sales. Prices on rush tickets may vary, but when I was a student at ASU I was able to get tickets to broadway shoes for 50% off by buying them this way.

For Broadway shows, you don't need to worry about TKTS if you have friends who are TDF members.
TDF membership is defined very broadly that usually you can find someone who can be a member and ask them to buy tickets for you. Quote:
