Quirky movies
As I sit here watching The Rocky Horror Picture show, I wonder what quircky and/or cult classic movies TFP loves.
So, what movies have you always loved that perhaps others look at your strangely for loving? What is it about these movies that you find so enticing? How often do you watch them? Growing up very close to my gay uncle, I was introduced to many fun movies. Cabaret was definitely a favorite growing up. How could you not love this movie? It had Liza Minnelli at her prime, Joel Grey and Micheal York. It touched on subjects, that are even now risque, like bisexuality, cross dressing, transsexuals and abortions. I think I watch this one about once a year, maybe more if I find myself humming the music. *Money makes the world go around* The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is another one I loved from the first time I watched it, I want to say I was 10? To see Hugo Weaving (think Agent Smith from Matrix) as a gay cross dresser who drives across the great outback in a giant bus is just hilarious. Top this all off with the awesome costumes and stage props. I also watch this one a few times a year. Whenever I make other watch it, I often get sideways glances, but I don't care! Secretary is a recent favorite. Discovered it when watching one of those "Top Ten Hottest Moments in Cinema" shows. One of the first mainstream movies to touch on the BDSM lifestyle. I cannot think of Maggie Gyllenhaal or James Spader with out seeing her bent over the desk, palms down, while he stands behind her wailing on her ass. Such a hot scene! I think when I first found this movie I watched it 4 times in one month. What are everyone else's? I can't wait to read about them.

Oh my father is gay so i have a simaler up bringing I am sure. I am a big "B" movie fan. I like strange things. I will have to agree with your choices of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". And here are some of my others that i watch on a regular basis:
Little Shop of Horrors: Is a musical about a guy that owns a Florest Shop whom falls in love with one of his Florests. He discovers this strage carnivoraus talking plant (From Outer Space) that will only eat blood and meat. The Plant helps the guy get the girl. There are there are hilarous moments and there are backup singers that jsut randomly appear thoughout the movie, LOL Guyver, Guyver 2 - Dark Hero: The Guyver movies are based on a Anime series of the same name. Its a Story about a young man that discovers a strage alien frisby shaped item that ends up bonding with him and coalessing into a form of Bio-Armor. In the process he descovers that here is a Corperation that is bent on world domination, where all the employess are able to Morph from Human to monster and back again at will for the purpus of fighting. And the gist of the movies is the Guyvers battle aganst the corperations and it soldures. Clue: Is a great Comady Based on the boardgame Clue. A who done it, with what, and where. Great cast, lots of running around going on. Gross Point Blank: Is a story about an Assasin that is having a midlife criss, that is forced to go to his home town to kill some wisleblower. While he is there he reconnects with Highschool prom date/girlfriend he stood up on prom night to join the army. Is a hoot of a movie. The Adventure of Buckeroo Bonzi: Is the story of a Rock star/Scientest/Cowboy/Gunslinger that invents a truck that can travel vast distances in the blink of an eye by creating a door though the 10th demention. There are mad scientests, Alien creatures and space ships. Cherry 2000: Is a story set in a post apacaliptic world where there is a man that breaks his Sex Robot, and has to hire a woman to take him out to a storage facility in the wastland to get a repalcement. In the process there are adventures and love stories. Multiplisity: Is the story of a Common working man that find that he never has enough time to do anything other then work. So he desides to take a Cloning specialest up on his offer to make a Clone of him to help him out. In the end there are a few more copies made, in the end it destroys his life and with the help of the other clones he is able to put it back together again. The Pirate Movie: Is a parody of the opera "Pirates of Penzance". All the Star Wars Movies: Well duh they are classics. Oh there are more but I cant think of them all atm. Ok Star I fixed it. :P

But why chris? You didn't explain why on any of them. I didn't want this to just be a post your favorite movie thread, I wanted some discussion. You have failed this assignment young man! Fix it and turn it back in when you're done.
Thank you chris, for fixing your post!

wow...the people who introduced me to quirky movies were all straight. Imagine that! And I dont like the traditional "gay" show tune kind of stereotype and certainly dont fit it...I loathe Barbara Streisand and if I see the Sound of Music one more time I will spit at the screen.
in saying that, some of my favorite quirky ones are: all of the divine movies boys dont cry eraserhead blue velvet strangeland (oh please look this one up..if you liked Secretary, you will love Strangeland) |

Punch-Drunk Love: This movie haunts my mind. Everything about it was just wonderful. It's been a while since I've seen it, so I want to watch it again. It's unlike anything else Adam Sandler has ever done. It's his best work by far. The soundtrack is one of its strong points. It gets stuck in your head and does such a good job setting the pacing and mood. Worth watching for some of the filming tricks too.
Be Kind Rewind: Totally worth watching despite what you think of the trailer. It's much, much more than what the trailer shows. A pleasant surprise. Quirky, indeed. Fantastical, even, but very downplayed in that respect...kind of dreamlike. Spider: Creepy. Psychological. Superb mind-fuckery. Cronenberg's best in my opinion. It weaves together a story via memories, and the inconsistencies and contradictions that may bring. Being that that's the main vehicle of the film, it's what makes it quirky.

tasineah, why do you like the movies you picked? What makes them favorites for you? Also, I'm pretty sure I have seen Strangeland and I'm not quite sure how Secretary is like Strangeland. To me Secretary has a positive ending and an overall happy feeling about it, whereas Strangeland was kind of dark and demented. Perhaps, you can explain this when you tell us why it falls into your favorite category.
Baraka, I totally agree with you about Be Kind, Rewind. Mos Def made that movie, IMO.

I love Bring it On. I'll watch it any time I see it playing. I even have a copy on my ipod for me to watch on the go.
I love the camp, I love the underdog that is happy being #2 but it feels like #1 as a different twist to the underdog make good movies. I love Take the Lead for the same reasons, the soundtrack is fun but I don't have the movie on my ipod, just the soundtrack. Kinky Boots is another that I'm oh so found of. I saw it as a screener on a fluke and find it amazing. Chiwetel Ejiofor sings all his own parts so the soundtrack is also a good time. Theme, underdog makes good.

I liked Strangeland because it was dark and demented! And because it had such beautiful tools! Secretary was a "feel good" movie, cute and playful, which is how alot of people put some BDSM in their lives. Strangeland is for the hardcore player and I liked both movies for both ranges of players. Kind of like watching "Lassie, did Timmy fall down the well?" and Silence of the Lambs. Both are rescue stories...one just makes you feel good..the other just makes you feel a little breathless when its over...

This is Spinal Tap. Not only is it the movie that launched a genre, but it's got some of the best one-liners in all of moviedom - "I am as God made me, sir!" "But this one goes to eleven." "Why would I want a Stonehenge that was threatened to be trod upon by a dwarf?!" "You can't really dust for vomit."
Ah, Spinal Tap, how I love thee. Even if some of the scenes seem a little dated, there are some absolute classics in there. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back I'm an unapologetic Kevin Smith fan. I love that he not only got virtually every actor that had been in one of his prior films to make an appearance, he mocked them while he did it. And studies have shown that every audience loves monkeys. By the way, the soundtrack is awesome. Please note that if after watching this one that if you find it impossible to call Jason Biggs anything but "Pie Fucker", it's not my fault. The African Queen - I was once late to a wedding where I was standing up because this was on. Bogart and Hepburn at their absolute best, and apparently I'm the only person under the age of 75 that's seen it. Thank you TBS! Boiler Room - There are days where I feel like that's my life, only slightly more legal. I definitely work with some guys like that here.

I have never seen Punch Drunk Love, I guess I will have to add it to my Netflix list. How good is it should I Netflixs it or just go buy it now?
Nor have I seen any of the other movies that have been mentioned. I guess I will be adding a few movies. Its a good thing, my Netflix list was getting kind of low. LOL

I freaking loved Silence of the Lambs.
People only made fun of me for watching it when I admitted that I've seen in in excess of 25 times since high school. Something about Anthony Hopkins and his eerie portrayal of Hannibal gets me. Shaolin Soccer--Just a really funny, really good, over the top Kung-Fu movie. Silly as all get out, but fun! People more make fun of me for the movies I can't stand or turned off.

I saw a movie late one night when I couldnt sleep called "In search of a midnight kiss"
Really liked it. Its quite a dark romance, its hard to get into the plot without spoiling it for anyone who might ever watch it, but I found it to be a very intelligent, and humane film. Both of the main romantic leads had things about them that you would dislike, yet both were basically human beings trying to do their best. _ Ive seen "The Secretary" too. Some of the spanking and so on was a bit much in my opinion, but it also had a more emotional side that was quite fulfilling although I didnt like the ending - and the guy who played the boss was really very funny in some of the comic scenes.

**JAZZ HANDS** So some of my favs are... To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar Patrick Swayze (may he rest in peace) was smokin in that movie. It was also so feel good with the small town accepting the queens for who they are. Also, Julie Newmar makes an appearance and she is GORGEOUS! "Little Latin boy in drag, why are you crying?" Juno I loved the sarcasm of the Juno Character. I think this movie could have been about me circa 1997, sans teenage pregnancy. So many great lines. I could watch that over and over. Vanessa:Your parents are probably wondering where you are. Juno: Nah. I mean, I'm already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into? Leah: It's probably just a food baby. Did you have a big lunch? Juno: You should've gone to China, you know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events. Jun: Ow, ow, fuckity-ow! Bren, when do I get that spinal tap thing? Stepmom: It's called a spinal block. And you can't have it yet, honey. The doctor said you're not dilated enough. Juno: You mean I have to wait for it to get worse? Why can't they just give it to me now? Stepmom: Well, honey, doctors are sadists who like to play God and watch lesser people scream... Convenient store guy: That ain't no Etch-A-Sketch. This is one doodle that can't be un-did, Homeskillet. My favorite exchange that made my heart melt a little... Dad: I thought you were the kind of girl who knew when to say when. Juno: I don't know what kind of girl I am. Killer Clowns from Outer Space It's just disturbing and doesn't help with my fear of clowns. Stephen King's It is scarier, but the Outer Space clowns were just bizarre. I remember watching it at a pretty young age too. My DVD collection is pretty much filled with quirky movies. |

I had sequential dreams about hannibel lecter, each building one upon the other, telling a tale, mounting to a message that was to be delivered to me at the end of the series. It took about six months for this to take place. During this time, I would waken, terrified, still in the dream, kicking out of bed onto the floor and crawling across it screaming and howling as tho he were atop me to fuck and eat me in not the nice way. I could feel my flesh be torn off my body. I never knew when these dreams would hit. The anxiety was terrible. But finally, when the last "episode" (for lack of a better word) occurred, instead of being terrorized into awakening, I simply sat up in bed and the revelation came. It was magnificent. Profound. And something I absolutely had to know or I never would be complete in life.
I have never had such a dream since.... Quote:

Okay, thinking about this today I realized I have way too many quirky movies I love. (I also love the word quirky). But I wanted to post a few more.
The Dark Crystal: This movie shows a different side to Jim Henson, we get to see something other than Kermit and Miss Piggy. It is dark and yet hopeful. Plus, you gotta love Fizgig! Labyrinth: Yet another great Jim Henson movie. David Bowie is just hot as Jareth the Goblin King. It is awesome to see Jennifer Connelly looking almost exactly the same only with bushier eyebrows. Pan's Labyrinth: This is a new favorite. So dark and twisted. The creatures haunt you later but are still fascinating. Pi: All I can say about this movie is, if you have not seen it you need to do so soon. You will either like it or not. There is no good way to explain why I like it. It is a mind twisting movie. I have many new movies to add to my watch list thanks to everyone's responses.
