Catherine Zeta-Jones and Scarlett Johansson snubbed Tonys press
June 14, 2010 | 12:25 pm
Back in the Tony Awards' press room Sunday night, journalists were furious when Catherine Zeta-Jones ("A Little Night Music") and Scarlett Johansson ("A View from the Bridge") refused to drop by and answer questions, which winners usually do. Zeta-Jones merely posed for paparazzi photos and answered a few questions from TonyAwards.com, then made a dash for the elevator with her Tony trophy clutched firmly in hand. Johansson raced directly from the photo room to the elevator, shooing everyone away with a dismissive wave.

It sure looked as if Broadway insiders got the brush-off once huffy Hollywooders got the booty they came to claim. West Coast celebrities often lose at the Tonys, whose voters love to give them a lesson in humility by choosing lesser-known theater veterans for awards. But this year the film stars romped, and their displays of apparent arrogance began right at the start of Tony season.

One day after the nominations came out, Zeta-Jones and "Fences" stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis showed up at the press junket where all nominees were invited to chat with media -- but they talked only to "E.T.," CNN and a few other major media outlets, then bolted. They showed no interest at all in other media like theater industry trade publication Back Stage and websites TheaterMania.com and, yes, TheEnvelope.com. I don't think Johansson even showed up at the junket. I didn't see her there. Some of us media wags were so upset by the snubs that we voiced firm protests -- and we were heard. Hats off to Washington and Davis, who made a point of redressing their initial mistake by joining all reporters in the press room to chat after the Tonys ceremony. What class acts! Watch a video of their exchange here.

But Zeta-Jones and Johansson snubbed most journalists at both media events and never seemed to care. Will there be a backlash next year when voters may decide that it's time to teach Hollywood invaders a lesson again?

LOL.

Is it any wonder that the theater community is largely regarded as chablis-sipping prigs? You can practically hear the indignant *sniff* of snubbed self-importance.

Actually, sounds like a pretty dickish move on the part of the actors. Don't want to talk to the press? Don't show up and get your award either.

I'm not sure how the community is responding to it, but from what I got from the quotation, I think your summary is a bit unfair. And that's because.....

...of this.

It was a bit "dickish." It doesn't matter if it was the Tony Awards as attended by self-important Chablis-sipping prigs or if it was a community award for donating the most books to the local schools—the media is going to want to talk to you. Zeta-Jones and Johansson know this more as much as anybody. I'm guessing there was something behind their decisions to show up and keep it brief. Either a) there was some backroom or theatre-community politics going on that they wanted to either avoid or send a message about, or b) they had somewhere else they had to or would rather be.

Either way, it's pretty lame what they did. They're celebrities. They're supposed to be in contact with the public; it's a part of their careers.

However, when you come to think about it: if you consider the talent, success, and pure hawtness quotient of both of these ladies, they can pretty much do whatever the fuck they want. They know this more than anybody by now.
