Movies: when to stay for the credits?

I tried this question over on Facebook, but my friends didn't solve it for me. So, let's try TFP.

You go out to the movies. The movie ends, the credits come up. You have to pee. Sometimes, the funniest parts of the movie happen during the credits. How do you know whether to stay or to go?

There really should be a source online to let me know if there is "good stuff" in the credits of a movie. I don't want to know what the "good stuff" is, I just want to know if I should stay.

Charlatan pointed me to the Geek Dad blog at Wired, which has this information for the few movies that they include. I also found reference to an iPod app that used to exist, but does no longer (Skip or Stay).

Help?

Once I've gotten over the hurdle of paying $10 to see a movie one time, I'm going to squeeze every last bit on enjoyment out if it I can. I Stay, regardless. Waiting another 3-4 minutes to pee isn't going to kill you. Well, it will almost never kill you.

I let my actions be dictated by what's going on the screen in addition to the credits. If there's nothing, then I bolt. If there is, I tough it out. If I have inside information (i.e. Iron Man), I stay regardless - and I went to the bathroom almost doubled over after the end of those credits I had to pee so badly.

Lots of movies still don't encourage you to stick around during the credits, but it seems like more and more are these days. And I'm all for it.

There IS a website that specializes in this, however for the life of me I can't remember it at the moment... Let me investigate.

Ah, this might be it... looks familiar:

...whenever Pat Proft was involved with the film. Think: The Naked Gun.

The credits are usually rife with humor.

While I agree, it's hard to hold back a 7 year old. Especially if there turns out to be nothing in the credits at all.

I'm with you on that one. However, the last time I went to a movie for full price it was $14 each (for 2112). At such a steep price, I had the kids put a drink and candy from home in their pockets. I only bought popcorn and a coffee while there. Luckily, when I took them to see Avatar, I happended to go on half price Tuesday... And we did not stay for the credits.

If it's a Jackie Chan movie, then you should stay for the credits.

This is easy...

If the theater lights come on during the credits, it's time to leave. Nothing's going to happen in the credits.

If the lights stay off, there's more to see. Stick around.

If I have enjoyed the film, I like to pay the people who made it the respect of viewing the credits, stinger or no stinger. Plus it is interesting to me to see what FX studios, etc, were involved.

...it'd be nice if the credits didn't zoom by at 90 MPH and were shown in something other than 12 pt font.

I mean, the hordes that left are already gone... and the two nerds in the theater might want to actually read the credits can't see shit.

Not necessarily...our theatre didn't have automatic lights, and sometimes, we just didn't remember to turn them back up after the movie

I always stay for the credits, unless I've been waiting the entire second half of the movie to pee. Even then, I'm reluctant.

I stay for the credits for a few reasons. The biggest one is so we can wait for the rush of people trying to exit all at the same time. If we saw an animated movie, we like to stay to see if we guessed the right actors voices for the characters.

I'll watch the credits if something happens in the beginning of the credits or if I have a hunch that there is something at the end (Iron man).

I've given up on holding my bladder for that long, so I usually wait til a major moment in the middle part of the movie then hit the afterwards. I usually only miss some useless dialog. That way I can sit in comfort for the last half of the movie.

Also, I've seen funny parts at the end of movies because I drank a whole water bottle of rum while in the movie and was a little to buzzed to get up right as the credits started.

Good work. If you can stand it that's definitely the way to go. I like to drink beers in the cinema but I really hate to miss bits for toilet breaks. Next time I go to a movie I'm taking rum.

Re the credits: they seem to last between five and ten minutes for a modern film. Unless it's something like this

or this

If I'm sober I don't want to carry on watching. It's just the names of the people that made the film - if you don't know any of them what's the point in staying to read all their names?

....is one point of view. The other argument says that the end credits are still part of the film and if you leave before they finish you've left prematurely even if there was no more narrative. Perhaps the purpose is to absorb the film's ending, relax, contemplate and reflect upon it before exiting into the real world.

If I've had quite a few beers during the showing (or, in future, a bottle of rum) I love to kick back and take in the credits - however long they last - while most of the audience fumbles about finding their things and getting out of the place. It's so relaxing to sit back and watch others stop relaxing and start doing stuff.

I tend to like staying for the credits, hearing the music, and seeing the text roll.. It can be a nice transition from the escapist movie setting to the physical reality of walking through the busy hallways and going towards the bathroom

I watch the credits, even when I'm watching a DVD at home. I'm a movie buff, but no expert. Still, I've seen some names that I've associated with another movie for whatever reason. I also feel I owe the acknowledgment to the best boy or key grip or all the other people who worked for the credit.
