Trying to find a book from my childhood

When I was very young I read a book about a race horse and I want to find it again for my little sister to read.

I don't remember the whole story but I'll give you what I can remember. The horse starts out being trained as a racehorse but for some reason that didn't work out. It then is bought to help pull a fire wagon and later gets hurt while going to a fire and it can't pull the wagon any more. He's then bought by a man who sells flowers to pull a flower cart. The man turns out to be mean and beats the horse and doesn't feed him well. The horse nearly dies from the poor treatment. Fortunately a doctor finds the horse and buys him, nurses him back to health and everything ends well.

Any ideas?

Is the eventual horse's savior a man, woman, boy or girl? I know you state 'doctor', but does the doctor care for it through and through, not giving it as a gift to a nephew/neice or anything?

I've found a few titles like "Harry's Horse" and "Chosen by a Horse" that fit part of your plot description, but it I doubt either book is the one you are describing, as the key differences in scenario easily eliminate them from being your elusive unknown title recalled by memory.

after an additional 15 minutes of searching, I'm still nowhere closer to effectively pinning down your title, frogza.

Perhaps this listing may help jog a memory loose: WPL Kids' Reading Lists: Horse Stories

My first thought was Black Beauty...but I don't remember him being a racehorse. Hmmmmm.

The doctor was a man. The "grand Finale" of the book is when the doctor rides the horse through a blizzard to save a sick child.

I had this book as a child back in the 60's and I can't remember the title. Darn.

If Shani is around, I know she's been helpful with these kinds of questions.

I searched for twenty minutes and couldn't find it.

It's been driving me nuts for days, I even resorted to using Bing since I couldn't find it with google

I couldn't find a result in a quick search, but the best place for you to go would be Loganberry Books: Stump the Bookseller. It costs to post a question ($2), but all threads are publicly viewable, so you might find the answer without having to pay.

Have you had any luck yet in locating the elusive title, frogza?
