Anyone watching Defying Gravity?

It's an odd little show. I think the wiki describes it as Grey's Anatomy in space. It's not quite accurate though. Or maybe as a man I don't want to admit to watching Grey's Anatomy in space.

I really feel like I'm the only person in the world watching it. A summer show coming on late on Sundays and it's had almost no advertising. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there has been watching.

Willravel 09-07-2009 05:48 PM

I'd describe it as Lost minus the intrigue in space. It's trying too hard to be mysterious and it's uninteresting. I gave it an honest shot because I love Office Space, so I'll give anything with Ron Livingston a shot, but knowing it's going to be cancelled before it can possibly get interesting.

We've been enjoying it. It's clearly a second-string show, but the cast is good, I like the conceit, and the technological handwaving is fun to watch.

And yes, it's dead in its moon-boots already. It had a 0.6-share last week. Tragic. It'll be lucky to get airtime to finish the 13 episodes they've already made.

A show that premiers in August by definition doesn't have any network support. And then to get that death-slot Sundays at 10pm? Forget it. It was doomed when the pilot aired. They've never advertised it that I've seen, I only know about it because I stumbled across the pilot on Hulu.

I've been watching it on Hulu: Hulu - Defying Gravity

Its ok so far. I agree that they're trying too hard to be mysterious, and it is kinda like "Lost" .. in space (not "lost in space") with all the flashbacks and over-mysteriousness.

I wonder if they'll get to Venus before they take the show off the air.

They might make it to Venus if they make it the full 13 episodes. The problem I have is that whatever's in Pod4 just isn't that threatening. It's definitely trying to hard to be mysterious. I mean, the alien versus LOST season 1 smoke monster? Seriously there's no way the alien competes.

What I found interesting in the last episode is that not everyone was hallucinating. I wonder if they just weren't targeted or maybe they had nothing tragic in their past to focus on.

I think they're just not useful yet for whatever Beta has in store for them.

Also note it's not just people's own pasts that they're being shown--black project manager lady, Ted's wife, is seeing the Mars sandstorm, and she wasn't even part of the program then.

We've taken to referring to whatever that is in Pod 4 as "Management". Anybody remember Carnivale?

It's entertainment. My other shows on hulu have ended.
I loved the chick who plays Zoe when she was in Dead Like Me, so I gave it a shot. I like Was and AJ and the baby bunny. I'm interested to see what'll happen... or at least keep me occupied until my other stuff starts back up again.

GOD I MISS CARNIVALE! It just needed 1 more season..

Have we actually seen Ted's wife hallucinate? We've seen her look at Beta and it's projected Mars to her but I don't believe she's actually seen anything like that when not in direct contact with Beta. Correct me if I'm wrong.

noodle 09-09-2009 06:28 PM

She saw something in the last episode. I don't know how to type a spoiler thingie. But she hallucinated, too.

Willravel 09-09-2009 06:30 PM

Is Defying Gravity better on acid?

Oh, that's true! Dirty children outside the window.

Here's how I know DG loses and LOST wins: I don't need to know about those dirty children.

noodle 09-09-2009 07:02 PM

i watched it tonight, that's the only reason i remembered.

Reese 09-09-2009 08:25 PM

Comparing this show to LOST and Carnivale is undeserving.. Both those shows were excellent. This one's just a summer time waster until the fall season starts. :)

I forgot all about the dirty children in the window though.

Sons of Anarchy started this week which means fall is right around the corner!

New House and Heroes on the 21st. New Dexter and Family Guy on the 27th.

Fringe on the 17th. This Thursday!

I watched the first two episodes of Defying Gravity online and then kind of lost track of it, but finally caught this week's episode and am back in.

The 'mystery' aspect is definitely a bit forced but the production values are high and I'll appreciate any sci-fi series that takes a premise beyond the standard pseudo-military organization fighting monsters.

As for this week's episode, I'm glad they're going to reveal the 'real' reason for the mission now rather than dragging it out for too long. That'd be like Lost still being stuck outside the Hatch.

I bet if it is cancelled due to low viewership, they'll make the remaining episodes available online.

Wyodiver33 10-01-2009 07:25 AM

It's hard these days for any Sci-Fi show to get good ratings. Americans want more "Reality" TV and Wrastlin'! Ugh. Depressing, but true. The dumbification of the world continues, with the US taking the lead.

fresnelly 10-01-2009 07:35 AM

Defying Gravity is still airing here in Canada on the Space channel. They are streaming the the eps on the site after they air on Friday nights.

I wonder if US viewers can see the streams?

If not, that would be like bizarro universe.

Welcome to bizarro universe. Says Canada only. There are ways around it, I'm sure. But that is funny.

Daniel_ 10-23-2009 01:04 PM

Defying Gravity started on UK TV this week, so I've just watched the first episode.

All in all, I'd like to watch the rest of the series. I hope it lasts.

fresnelly 11-04-2009 04:17 PM

Well the 13th and last episode of Defying Gravity has aired here and that's the end of it.

Want to know how it was supposed to end? Here's an an interview with series creator James Parriott outlining the fates of the major characters had it continued:

Daniel_ 11-05-2009 12:06 AM

Hmmmm, saw ep 3 now, and it didn't grip me as much as the openers. I'll keep it up, but it's a "nice to watch" not a "must see".

Then again, hardly anything these days is "must see" to me.

I watched it last week. It was a nice show. However, due to my hectic schedule, I m unable to watch it regularly.
