Hung

I had to be the one to start this thread.

Heh.

Anyways, has anyone watched this series on HBO? Its about a 40-something dad who is divorced and has a whole bunch of bad luck that sends him into the economic gutter. To climb out, he becomes a gigolo.

So far it is interesting, at best. I've watched 5 episodes and I want to keep watching just to be amused, but there is nothing special about it. It seems like HBO is trying to hit back at Showtime for having a prostitute show.

I bagged it after the first two episodes. I wanted it to be fun, but the guy's such a sad sack, it's just impossible to like him.

"I'm pathetic AND my dick is bigger than yours." Yeah... no thanks.

I'm sticking with it, because I genuinely like the actors. I am not a real fan of the plot line so far. I sit there and ask, "So what?" The twin kids angle is forced, and they are written badly.

Down-on-your-luck comedy/drama can be funny, I think... Where is this going? Obviously the next door neighbor is going to be a friction thing, and the ex-wife is trying to get along and all that stuff...

Are they trying to do too much? Is this a drama or a comedy? If it is both, then shouldn't they be a little bit more clear? The fact that I can't figure it out makes this flawed from the start.

I don't think that this going to last for long, unless the writing starts pushing the audience in the right direction.

HBO is getting a little lazy, I think, and they think that people are going to watch just because they can curse and it is commercial-free. They need to learn that it is the writing and acting that keep the audiences, not the occasional f-bomb or nipple on screen.

The first episode showed promise. The second broke it.

I wish they would have invested some time into trying to save John from Cincinnati instead of developing more series that won't make it.

I kind of like the poet pimp girl, though.

Yeah, it got me laughing when I saw it in the new posts lineup.
I've never heard of this show. I might just check it out.

Or Carnivale. I'm still hoping that one will return...

Haven't seen Hung though. Maybe I'll check it out sometime, but I have a hard enough time keeping up with the few shows I do watch.

It's like "Weeds", but with dick.

I like it, but I'm never anticipating for the new episode. I'm not sure how long I'll keep watching. It makes me laugh, but it isn't hilarious. I do sometimes wish it were an hour long though.

As much as I loved it, IMO two seasons was plenty. Any more, and you end up answering too many questions, and you kill it. Part of the beauty of that show was the mysterious, unknowable nature to its cosmology.

But it ended on a cliffhanger!!! Also, Daniel Knauf had the whole thing planned out from the very beginning for 6 seasons. The mythology was already decided on, as were the character arcs. That tends to make for excellent television, and is sadly very rare. He'd like to at least finish the story through graphic novels, but HBO are being assholes and refuse to release the rights... as if they're doing anything with it.

It seems that many thought the same about The Sopranos and many debate as to how well that ended.

Interesting, I've never heard that before. Certainly hard to believe considering the huge break before the last season. Maybe it was a similar situation to Babylon 5 where they thought they were going to get canceled so they finished the planned story and then had to come up with something new for the unexpected final season? As far as I know, Babylon 5 and Carnivale are the only relatively recent American shows which were planned out from beginning to end before they aired, but it's possible I just wasn't aware about The Sopranos.

BTW, I'm not saying that I know or even believe that is what Chase was doing. I just recall reading such things on other forums or such. Personally I think Chase knowing the thing was coming to a close just phoned the last season or so in to collect a check from HBO.
