Torchwood - 5 Night series
 

Is anyone watching this short series, which on in America this week.

They are doing a bang-up job keeping the suspense levels ratcheted up really high between episodes.

The so-called marksmen should be sent down the ranks for retraining.

Am I the only one who thinks Gwen should be locked in a cell with a weevil?

It's really an outstanding miniseries. I almost broke down at the end. I won't say much, but this really is something different than what we've seen from Torchwood before.

Absolutely agree. There is a different feel to this one. The backstory on Jack is becoming more intriguing, and I expect Ianto to really bloom and surprise us.

My wife set it up to record on the DVR, then I got excited when I seen BBC America went HD on Monday, the first night of the show.......only to then find out on numerous other websites and forums that while they are in HD now, they don't have many (if any) carrier agreements in place, so no one is watching this in HD :(

Guess I know why they are selling the Blu-ray and DVD on the 28th. I thought that was awful soon to have a home version out.

We are watching....Im a HUGE torchwood fan, fell in love with Jack from season 1 of the reupped Doctor Who.

I've only seen epi 1, we have to dvr it and watch the next day, I about fell out of my chair Spoiler: when that girl called Jack "dad" lol, I mean I know its possible, but since its never been hinted at, it was a major surprise...I cant wait to see how he survives the bomb the put inside him

My question: Spoiler: The government agents only recovered bits and pieces of Jack after Torchwood HQ was bombed. His remains were then taken to the prison and started to regenerate (impressive graphics / makeup). Does this mean that the other body parts that remained in the ruins of Torchwood HQ will regenerate, too?

LOL, that'd be something. I suspect that Spoiler: the nature of Jack's regeneration has less to do with biology and more to do with physics. The whole of Jack is stuck in a state of special time in which, while it can operate at the same rate in time as the rest of us, biological development and/or deterioration are set to a certain time, the time when he was brought back to life by Rose/TARDIS. Every time some change happens to change Jack from the state of when he was first alive after being resurrected, he returns to that state. The thing that interests me is that he's slowly aging, and will eventually be the Face of Bo. That tells me that instead of being completely stuck, he's actually moving forward from that point very slowly.
Interesting stuff to think about.

Spoiler: I remember The Doctor telling Jack that he was a fixed point in time, so either time actually operates in different planes or is not subject to current human understanding, or it is actually circular in nature. :confused:
I think another way of looking at this is in reverse: that Jack has been slowly "un-aging" from his last point on the circular continuum (Face of Bo) and is now beginning to travel on the 2nd half of the arc (beginning the aging process again). Something like a recurrent loop. I know I'm not expressing myself clearly, and my lack of knowledge in physics is showing....

I think Jack's bits and pieces in the old Torchwood site may come up in future episodes (if not already planned, that story arc would be an excellent one for the producers to explore).

Also, Jack regenerated without his special watch.

Excellent series. It's frightening really. It makes me wonder how the same actions from the American government would go over with half of households owning a gun.

Yeah; they probably could (and should) do a prequel about Jack's life. I loved the mini-series and plan to buy it when it's released on DVD this week (I already have seasons one and two on DVD).

I have thought and thought about this and I still honestly dont know what I think.

I do know the story line was great, powerful and dark. Part of me says its really great to have a tv show that doesnt sugar coat things and I have loved Jack since he showed up in Doctor Who. Im REALLY conflicted Spoiler: over him using his grandson, somehow the 12 kids in 1965 didnt bother me as much, and I know the good of the many blah blah blah, but his own grandson? and they killed Ianto!!! OMG WTF was that? I wasnt upset about owen, couldnt stand him, Tosh was sad but they had to go and get rid of Ianto? grrrrrr

There is a suggestion that if they do Series 5 in future, they will somehow undo that because so many people feel like you do. :thumbsup:

I don't think they'll undo it. I don't want them too, at least. I think it just add complexity to the character and shows that even for an immortal there's no perfect nobody-gets-hurt solution to every problem. It was a sacrifice he had to make and a burden he'll have to carry for eternity.

I'm with Shani - Spoiler: getting rid of Ianto was the worst blow of the whole series. I had written in the earlier post that Ianto the late bloomer was finally coming into his own, and I couldn't wait to see where his character was headed, especially his relationship with Jack. Then, that damn Russell totally ruined my anticipation by getting rid of Ianto -and a most unworthy death, at that - while irksome Gwen gets to hang around. To add salt to the wound, oafish Rhys can't take a hint and disappear for a few minutes to give Jack and Ianto some time alone. :mad:

I think Jack sacrificed his grandson to atone for the lives of those Scottish orphans he rather callously traded away, especially after he saw how the 456 had made use of the children. His inability to die had made him immune to feeling, particularly the feelings of others, and the lack of closeness with his own progeny made it easier to not think of them as relatives.

I agree with CyberMike about the eternal burden Jack must shoulder for the death of his grandson, but I hope they do reverse the decision on Ianto.

I like how they currently reveal tidbits of Jack's backstory in each episode - it adds to the mystery and attraction of his character. (Plus John Barrowman is :hearts:um, well, use your own adjective.;) I do like that coat.

Ooops - I thought the 5 day special was series 4, but it was 3.

I finally watched the last 2 episodes. I kept thinking that Spoiler: they would somehow bring Ianto back. His character interaction with Jack was just getting good and they have to go and get rid of him. I don't know how you will have Torchwood with only Gwen, Rhys and possibly Jack.

Haven't seen it yet, but looking forward to it. I just have to get caught up on the last bits of Series 2 first....

Been avoiding this thread untill I finally saw all 5 parts. Wow. I loved it. I'd never seen Torchwood before but the commercials they ran for this show just looked pretty damn good so I recorded it.

I think I need to rent the first 2 seasons now.

Are the first seasons also mini series type or are they more episode style like xfiles or whatnot?

The first to series were 13 weekly episodes (I think it was 13, like Doctor Who). And yes...you need to watch them, then REWATCH the season 3 mini series with the knowledge you have gained :)

I went to Torchwood last week. They've rebuilt the big waterfeature already!

Wow. I never watched Torchwood because I never watched Dr. Who. I know lots of other geeks love it but it all seemed silly and camp and besides...there's so much backstory there that it would take years to catch up to speed.

But I decided to break down and watch Children of Earth because I read that I didn't have to know anything at all about Dr. Who or Torchwood. And wow, was that good. One of my favorite things in television is when a show gets taken into deep, dark, miserably awful new territory and I could actually see Torchwood marching down that path over these five eps - even though I've never seen it before.

Spoiler: My one caveat for what was an otherwise excellent miniseries in every respect is that the solution (gobbledygook we just made up, have never mentioned before, requires fake sci fi technology, and only became apparent after nonsensical leaps of logic) represented the worst of science fiction. It's my understanding that Dr. Who famously had issues with everything being resolved by literally waving a magic wand...well, no difference here. Nevertheless, it's ok, because the miniseries was never about aliens and defeating them and whatnot. If it was, the solution would turn out to be those alien hitchhikers which release endorphins from the beginning of the first ep like I thought when the 456 said they used kids as drugs. That would have been neat and tidy and boring. Instead, it was about what people are willing to do, and what is wrong or right, when there is no way out. And it was excruciating and awesome.

I understand that Torchwood is not universally loved, and that the miniseries is considered a step above the series. I think I'll check it out anyways.

I would never say season 3 was a step above the previous seasons, to me it was a culmination in revelations made in the previous years.

Doctor Who is not always a happy everything is resolved to make people happy kind of way...there is quite a bit of dark stuff in there too (especially with the 10th Doctor), you might want to rethink watching it.

I am watching this on DVD now... I just finished episode four. The series is great. They really need to pick this up for another season.

I've seen a couple of standalone episodes now on HD Net, it's great.
