Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Update: New Images From Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland! - ComingSoon.net

Quote:
From Yahoo! Movies come two more photos, one of Mia Wasikowska as Alice and the other of Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. They've been added below!

USA Today has published new images from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland featuring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Also included are three more pieces of concept art.

The article explains that the March 5, 2010 release, co-starring Michael Sheen, Mia Wasikowska, Matt Lucas, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman, is almost like a sequel to the original story:

The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember.
Thoughts? Opinions?

It looks like the visuals will be mind-blowing. I'm guessing the stills aren't doing them justice, and I can't wait to see them alive on the big screen.

I'm pleased with the casting.

I don't know what to think about the approach to the story. I hope it works. I really do. It does have me a bit concerned, but I will go in with keen interest.

I am looking forward to it, as of today.

Also, what am I missing about the relationship between Burton, Depp, and Bonham Carter?

Hey! awesome, more word on this movie.

I'm excited for it.

I remember reading the alice novels back as a kid.

The world of wonderland is so open to interpretation. And I know in Burton's creative hands, it will truly stretch the imagination.

Can't wait!

Well, HBC and Burton have been living in sin for about 8 years, and have a kid together, and Depp & Burton have been good friends for around 20 years.

I really hope this is good, because it seems like a good fit. But then again Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had me excited as well, and that turned out to be a big turd.

I almost would have rather seen American McGee's version of Alice get the big screen treatment.

hmmmm. Looks interesting. I like the casting... not so much liking the Mad Hatter's costume.

Think I'm going to go reread the book soon.

Edit--and I also hope it turns out better than Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

Thanks, Shauk!

I'm a Lewis Carroll fan (years ago someone bought me collectors' editions of the two Alice books) for sure. Add Burton, Depp and Helena? I'm excited!

I really want to like Tim Burton. He picks great subject. He has a strong visual sense. He knows how to cast.

But the guy is weak on story structure. His films often fall apart in the second act. He also has no respect for source material.

I will eventually see this on TV or through a rental by my family but I have given up on Burton. I don't really want to see his films anymore.

Me too! I was talking to my SO about that same relationship.

Johnny Depp more so than Helena, but interesting.

Wow those sets looks spectacular. Mad Hatter looks more like Elijah Wood than Johnny Depp imo.

I hope it's good. Tim Burton has some great flicks but he's not incapable of producing some stupid movies.

Tim, Come on, quit burtonizing everything and give us another original screenplay that isn't stop motion.

Ok I'm ashamed to say this is the first I've heard of this film remake. I'm a big fan of films being on the strange side. This one looks right up my ally. I've always been a fan of Alice In Wonderland. Hopefully this movie doesn't ruin the story for me.

The more I think of it, the more I'm looking forward to HBC's enlarged head.

What a genius idea, enlarging HBC's head. What beautiful, beautiful imagery.

Except for a few questionable works, I think Tim Burton does generally well with this kind of stuff. I can't imagine many others I'd rather see make this film. It certainly could have been off worse.

As for Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, it's not as bad as some of you are making it out to be. I'm willing to bet you're letting the previous version influence your thoughts on the newer one. It was generally good; it just wasn't as good as the other. Some didn't like Depp's portrayal of Wonka. I, on the other hand, thought it was a fresh take that worked.

I was recently amazed at the realization that the man who played the Oompa Loompas was the same guy who played Teeny Weeny, the guy who rode the racing snail in The Neverending Story. But I digress.

I'm looking forward to Burton's, Depp's, and Bonham-Carter's work on Alice.

If you want a thrill, watch the original

It is 10 minutes long, and damned well worth all of them.

From Hell, Nick of Time, Astronaut's Wife, Secret Window?

I'm not saying he's bad. It was just a cynical quip. I generally assume the movie isn't going to be a complete waste of time but just like Burton, Depp has a couple of poor films in his filmography. Personally, I enjoyed his films like Ed Wood, Benny and Joon, What's eating Gilbert Grape more than Pirates.

A truly great actor can only do so much with a lousy script, other than to keep you watching so you can bitch about it. I think his non-commercial films help balance those overly commercial pieces. If you haven't seen Dead Man or The Brave you must! Not the best movies but proof of incredible acting because you absolutely must sit through it.
