So you think you can dance
Ok, from some comments around here, its obvious Im not the only one watching this show....so lets talk about it.
I LOVE this show, its head and shoulders above Dancing with the Stars. I started watching the year Lacey was on (and it saddens me that she's been reduced to doing DWTS). My favs from past seasons have been Lacey, Neil, Hok, Dominic and Twitch. My favorite dances have been the one that Lacey and Neil did that Mia did, where they were portraying Mia and her father...actually made me cry. Then the one that Neil and Sabra did to Sweet Dreams and the Paso Doble, oh god Neil looked hot!!! Then the one that Neil and Danny did to the Presets song. Last year....omg, the Door Dance with Twitch and Katee, I still pull that one up on you tube to watch it. Its early this year...I dont really have a pick, but I did really love Max (not so impressed with his partner) anyone else wanna chime in? (and no, lets not turn this into a "how much Mary needs to be muzzled thread lol)

Since this is basically what I do - dance, direct dance, hire dancers, have sex with dancers (as well as act/sing and all that jazz) - I feel I have a pretty firm grasp on what "is dance" and that show is dance.
Every year there is "an artist" that kills me to watch them dance. Second season it was Travis, Mark was amazing last year. This year I'm betting on Evan Kasprzk. In fact, I have run into his brother a couple of times through workshops/masterclasses, etc so when he auditioned with "After The Lights Go Down Low" - one of the best choreographed broadway routines I've ever seen - last year I was committed to him. I hope he makes it to the end. If he doesn't, I'll hire him.

I like Mark a lot too....I have not fallen in "love" with anyone yet, but this is the first week we've really gotten to see them, but I have to say Caitlin impressed the hell out of me dancing on her hands in the Bollywood dance

I'm a big fan of the show. I haven't seen season 1, but I've seen every season after.
My favorite choreographer has been Wade Robson. Absolutely beautiful dances. I have to say 'Twitch' has been my favorite so far. I enjoy the fact that 'Hok' has gone on to doing America's Best Dance Crew.

she's too lanky for me. I was big into Paris; alas she is gone. Seriously, watch Evan. He is unstoppable! Unstoppable I say!

He did a dance with Sara and Jesus with the concept of two vaudevillian vagabonds. It was insane. Later that season he did the infamous Fox Routine. It contained no dance, no jazz structure at all; it was telling a story, but at what cost? And this is coming from the most minimalist, absurdist, Brechtian loving theatre artist around. Mia's work is devastating. A really under appreciated piece she did last year was Mark and Chelsea's "Tim Burton Beautiful" routine. It kills me. I'm still bitter that Chelsea didn't win.

Max was a good guy and a good dancer and it's always sad to see the nice ones go, but I don't think he was top-notch.
I love the show and have been watching for about 3 or 4 years as a shoulda-stuck-with-dance-instead-of-trying-to-be-too-cool-in-middle-school. I'm not in love with anyone in particular yet, but I do have a handful of favorites. Can't wait to see what happens as the dancers grow and progress!

Been watching since season 1. I just want to see one of my b-boys or poppers actually win the damn thing. Sadly, it won't happen this season. This season Ade and Kayla are head and shoulders above the rest.. Ade is phenomenal and Kayla is just perfect. Smooth and powerful.
The thing I've noticed this season is the dancers are better as a whole than previous seasons, but they haven't made a connection with the audience like others have before. Maybe time will change that. I wish SYTYCD would bring back Wade for a whole season..his stuff is mind blowing. Shane Sparks has become predictable but his stuff is way better than anything Tabitha and Napolean (sp?) come up with..their choreography sucks. I wasn't that surprised to see either go last night. Max never comes out of his ballroom feet.. that's not going to cut it. thespian: I totally see where you're coming from on Wade, but his routines are challenging in a mental and physical sense. Mia is freaking awesome, but her attitude gets in the way. I think Sonya could easily rival her. and is it me or has Tyce's stuff just become really watered down lately? and for the love of anything holy.. please tell Mary to SHUT THE FUCK UP! I'd like to get rid of her and replace with Adam. I'm so sick of hearing that god awful scream. |

Cat is like 7 foot tall, I think they do a great job dressing her.
Evan is my fav. this season. I don't know about the females yet. I'm leaning toward Asuka but she hasn't really done a routine I've loved yet.

Tyce, for me, hits once or twice a season with a killer broadway routine. He does 1970/80's musical theatre well; lots of running around stage. Less style, more pizazz. I think what's holding Sonja back is what makes Mia's work so incredible. Sonja, it seems, believes that constantly supporting artistry, no matter the style or the level of work, will make better dancers. Mia does the opposite; she celebrates those who excel and doesn't applaud those who fall short. And I'd agree with Mia; artists are like wine grapes. Wine is better when the grape has struggled; it's brings out the flavour. An easy life in art means lazy, under achieving art. And Wade is fierce, but look at the audience he is playing to. It's like putting Sufjan Stevens on American Idol. They are both incredible artists who have very limited audiences on a very production heavy show. They are in the wrong place for their art to be truly appreciated which is why he misses sometimes. I don't appreciate it when artists reach for an audience but it's kind of the nature of the beast in this case; something Wade can't seem to grasp.

you make some great points. Sure it's two separate styles of Hip-Hop, but really when it comes down to it, Tab&Nap's style isn't really Hip-Hop.. I'm not sure what to call it, but it's not street. Hip-Hop has become a word that is thrown around far too easily and encompasses things that it's not supposed to.. maybe it's just the purist in me that hates their style. I love Sonya's work... but while I won't argue with you that Mia's is amazing, I think that if Sonya ever takes on a business role in relation to her artist role, she'll blow Mia out of the water. Mia is amazing, but she gets a little too cocky for my taste. I suppose she deserves to be cocky though. You're dead on about Wade, but that's why I enjoy him so much. He doesn't care what demo is watching the show, he wants to put his ideas and art out there so that even if one person enjoys it, he's happy. He and his wife come up with some fantastic numbers.. the hummingbird set that he did a couple of seasons ago still stands out in my mind.. pure brilliance. |
