Actor Liam Neeson is in talks to star in the big-screen version of classic TV show The A-Team, according to reports.

The star is in talks to play Hannibal in the film

The 57-year-old is in negotiations to star as John "Hannibal" Smith, the role made famous by the late George Peppard, industry newspaper Variety said.

It also reported that The Hangover star Bradley Cooper was also involved in talks to star in the film as womanising Templeton "Faceman" Peck.

Production is due to begin on the film in August for a June 2010 release.

The other two remaining roles of "Howling Mad" Murdock and "BA" Baracus have still yet to be cast.

However US rapper and Terminator Salvation star Common has been rumoured to be in talks to star in the the role that made Mr T an 80s icon.

Tony and Ridley Scott are producing the film, which will stick to the TV show's premise of four war veterans wrongly convicted of armed robbery who escape from a military prison to become do-gooder mercenaries.

OMFG! If done right, this is going to blow my mind.

What do you think of the casting considerations?
Who would you like to see cast?
What do you hope to see in the film?
What do you hope to not see in it?

Personally, I love Neeson, and so I hope he takes the role. I think he'd do an excellent job.

Be sure to return to this thread as we get more developments!

I love Liam Neeson. I don't love him for Hannibal. Same for Common.

The A-Team only works as a self-aware, over the top dramedy. It's fun because it's ridiculous. Hannibal should be someone more like Alec Baldwin, someone that can do comedy. Baracus should be absurdly over the top, like Michael Jai White with a mohawk and gold chains (watch the Black Dynamite trailer, you'll see it). I dunno about Bradly as FACE!. Can he play awesomely suave-diculous? Only one man alive can play Murdock: Cromp.

BTW, when I looked for Murdock on Youtube, I got a whole bunch of videos of him with R&B playing in the background. Pretty odd.

They could have Katee Sackhoff play Face.

Ha, nice.

As for Neeson, Will, I think this particular role would benefit from atypical casting. I can see Neeson pulling something like this off. He has a terrific range. It would, in my opinion, be better than going with all-too-obvioius choices such as Baldwin, or worse, Burt Reynolds or William Shatner.

Willravel 06-09-2009 10:14 AM

Don't get me wrong, I love Neeson. Kinsey is one of my favorites precisely because he's such an incredible actor. He was even in Love Actually. I don't deny he has range either. It's just that he's too established as a respectable actor for the roll. He was in Schindler's List. Neeson on an A-Team movie would be like Daniel Day-Lewis playing Strangefellow Hawk in an Airwolf remake. It wouldn't make sense.

Shatner... man that'd be something.

The thing to remember is that the film won't be the TV show. It will have a much bigger budget and the benefit of advances in special effects. It's not going to have the same feel to it, but it does need to be humorous and over the top.

shakran 06-09-2009 10:37 AM

hell Mr. T doesn't look a day older than he did on the original show. Have him play BA.

True, this will be a movie and thus will be big, loud, and shiny, but you've gotta capture what it is that made the A-Team an adventure; the complete disregard for reality. I want BA to unload 20 cartridges at a stereotypical bad guy and not hit him once. I want to see a weapon made out of a blender, some rope, and 14 chainsaws. I want to see Murdock flying a V-22 Osprey wearing a Chinese railroad worker's outfit without any explanation whatsoever. The movie has to capture that fun camp feel otherwise it won't be respecting (using that term kinda liberally there) the source material.

I want to leave the theater saying, "I love it when a movie comes together."

I love Neeson, but even bearing the campy fun of Darkman in mind, I don't know if he can remove his prestige and dumb himself down enough for the roll.

shakran 06-09-2009 11:57 AM

You're probably going to be disappointed. I would not be surprised if they do what the Knight Rider guys did - took a campy, fun 80's show that knew it was campy and made fun of itself, and tried to turn it into a CIA anti-terror Tom Clancy-wannabe show that flopped.

Willravel 06-09-2009 12:00 PM

If they do, I'll pity them.

I'll pity the fools.

Reese 06-09-2009 06:39 PM

I think Common would be a decent fit as BA. He was far from the worst part of Terminator Salvation. I never once looked at his character and said eww rapper turned actor like I have with so many other rappers. I think Neeson is a worse fit as Hannibal than Common is for BA.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a recent movie that hit the right tone you're talking about.

Charlie's Angels? Crank? Smokin' Aces? Mission Impossible?

Bleh.

Perhaps The Transporter (1st one only) is a good model but Hollywood doesn't really have a great track record with this kind of thing. It's a different era now. They just don't make films like Roadhouse anymore.

Despite being a huge fan of the TV show as a kid, I'm not especially hungry for this.

On second thought, I am looking forward to the trailer. THAT will be cool!

And probably enough.

On the plus side, maybe Vans could be cool again!

fresnelly, they're going to need to paint up one of these for the film, especially now that GM has all that new money.

Unfortunately the economy required the team to downsize in the fuel economy department:

It's OK. Knight Rider had to scale down too.

You should rename this thread "Crompsin Porn."

Do you think they'll use a new Corvette for Face's car?

9/10 Hollywood remakes are horrible botch jobs. I expect this to be no different. Since the rebirth of Battlestar Galactica the increasing flavor of these remakes is to 'reimagine' them for a new hip crowd unfamiliar with the originals. This is not a new concept, and while it worked extremely well for movies like Star Trek, it isn't an exact science and in many cases, the result can be quite disastrous (see: Transformers).

I see nothing but bad things coming out of this movie. I might've looked more favorably upon this movie ten years ago when there were rumors of starring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Smith and Wesley Snipes as B.A., but I don't like this. Common's a good guy, but he doesn't give me that 'badass' vibe of B.A. Ice Cube, maybe, but not common. I'm not liking this at all.

Speed_Gibson 06-10-2009 08:46 PM

My initial reaction is "Hell No" but there is a chance that it might not suck as long as someone like J.J. Abrams is not directing it. Never thought a Star Trek would join the ranks of Mission Impossible on the mostly bad/almost watchable action film list.
I would love to see a GOOD version of the never-materialised Quantum Leap film more than the A-Team or Airwolf personally.

Baldrick 06-14-2009 05:00 PM

After the crap that was the Dukes of Hazzard feature remake, I can't say I'm looking forward to the A-Team.

It's looking decent, so far.

After enjoying Sharlto Copley's work in District 9, I'm looking forward to seeing him as Murdoch.

I'm not buying Jessica Biel as an Army General, though.

Vaultboy 01-14-2010 08:47 AM

Its a Scott Free production. I'll go see it just for that.
