Terminator Salvation (Contains SSSSSpoiler)
I can appreciate that need to keep the franchise alive as it's a commercial brand that took some serious money to build.
But the war is over, forget the "global skynet network is strong and alive", if you have been following the series like I did since 1987 you will agree that there is only one Skynet mainframe, it would not share power or allow itself be duplicated or backup. Connor took out skynet in SAN FRAN, that's it. I read all of the 5/10 scoring before seeing the movie, I was skeptical but this one was good, Chrisian Bale actually had some depth with this piece, the actions were good |
The army-of-one routine in epic battle scenes is getting older as I do, but the movie was alrighty-roo in my book. Makes Terminator 3 look even worse than it already was: a two-flush humor turd in the killer-cyborg-from-the-future franchise punch bowl. Eee-hmm. Pardon my French, but T3 was awful.
Good: Spoiler: Great special effects and sets, awesome camera work, mini-guns, chewed-face T600s, CGI Arnold-esque cameo. Pirate'd Michael Ironside on a sub. Bad: Spoiler: Chopper/water scene. Lack of actual Terminator scenes. Fragility of Terminators to "modern" small arms. Skynet AI being the douchey chick from Fight Club. Sexy make-up'd Asian A-10 pilot. Weird "healing chamber" for anti-hero. This one was a little too Transformers for my liking, but it was pretty grood. |

You can only expect so much continuity from the franchise when three directors have had a go at it but I was still pleasantly surprised by Salvation. It looked great, sounded great and was downright enjoyable. The second half of the film could've flowed a lot better, it should have ended in more of a crescendo and Wright's explanation scene could've been a lot better but as a Terminator fanatic - I'll take what I can get. |
I'd watch T3 again every time over Salvation, if only because the ending is such a lovely homage to Fallout, even if it's purely unintentional. It's certainly not as good as 1 or 2, but I don't understand at all why people so unapologetically dis it.
Salvation had worlds of potential to be a great movie that was ruined by a completely irrelevant John Connor, a plot that made no sense at all and a gross lack of follow through on the most interesting (and possibly best acted) character in the piece-Kyle Reese. To say nothing of the fact that the entire movie set us up to have John Connor's face transplanted onto Marcus Wright's body at the end in a delicious bit of irony but we were instead left with the heart transplant nonsense. McG clearly had no idea what to do with this movie other than to have things blow up. Too bad. |

Terminator 2 is the best action movie ever made. The cinematography is still mind blowingly good and the CGI is STILL some of the best in movies. Good CG makes you respect it, bad CG just gets you to the next scene. The CG in Terminator 2 was in your face but not overly complex...enough to get the point across and keep you amazed at what movies can do.
The action scenes in that movie can't be topped. It saddens me that T3 and T4 sucked. |
